I would put Crewe just above Newport in 16th biggest myself.

FGR are substantially bigger than Crawley and a bit bigger than Macclesfield, I would say we are slightly bigger than Stevenage too, we certainly have a better away support.

To put Crewe above clubs like Leyton Orient and Cambridge is just plain daft!!

Ha! We're above Thames AND Middlesbrough Ironsides AND Bootle AND Northwich Vics AND Salford. We're clearly massive.

Rotherham Town, we're coming for you.

The only wheelchair football team to play league football. We need to be making more of a thing of this than we are.

What exactly makes Cambridge and Leyton Orient bigger. Fan bases are pretty similar, our stadium is bigger, our academy is better, our recent history is far better................

So it's official, we are the biggest club in lge 2 next season.

By biggest we obviously mean the most successful in lge football as defined by the table above.

Saw this on Reddit a few weeks ago (aka I have found Shoddy's Reddit account)...

The problem with that table is that it takes no account of cup successes, or when the points were won. So teams that accrued a lot of points in the late nineteenth century can be deemed 'bigger' than clubs that have been more successful in modern times.

The reality is that the definition of the 'size' of a club is subjective.

Ah yes, the youth team. Always the first thing I refer to when thinking about club size. Still, looks like those five or so years your nonced-up kiddiwinks gave you in the 2nd division has given you an otherwise baffling illusion of superiority. I will, as always, look forward to you bringing your usual 200 fans to E10. Well, unless it’s a Tuesday.

Orient have spent much more of their history in the second tier than Crewe, and probably have a better cup record, reaching the semi-final of the FA Cup as recently as the late seventies. I always view them as a bigger club than Crewe.

However, I would say that Crewe and Cambridge are similar.

i think when looking at club size the last 20 or 30 years should take more importance than ancient stuff.

over the last 20 or 30 years teams like Orient and Carlisle really not done that much

so what Crewe have done is more relevant, not that i think they're bigger. Orient are better supported than Crewe. Crewe are a L2 club really that had a few purple patch seasons. Crewe's stock has only risen cos of their recent seasons in the Championship and youth academy.

I always think Bury are tiny in reality but I know they were once bigger.

We know our place ;)

Pretty sure if/when we ever get back in the league we will be the smallest (excluding those historically non-league sides).

Our attendances used to be on a par with the likes of Rochdale, Crewe and Harlepool but they all seem to get bigger crowds than we could realistically hope for these days even if we were in the league.

Out of them 3 I'd say you are smaller, like you say the others are better supported. hartlepool have good support considering how shit they are most seasons! think they had about 700 at ours on a Tues night.

But you are still a solid Div 4 club if you ask me

Not having a dig at our rivals, but I would say Newport would definitely have been bigger than Torquay and probably still are. Their attendances have been on a par, but Newport have more third tier seasons since the fourth tier was created, even though they folded and were out of the League for thirty years. I would argue that Newport are also potentially better placed to be bigger in future, given they're more accessible to the rest of the country.

Yes you're probably right, as I said we would be the smallest team in the league if we ever return (other than the tinpotters ;)).

How does this tedious topic even get so many pages every year without fail?

My conclusion is that we're all shit and tinpot even if we've all had our days in the Sun at some point, just some clubs in this league are just bankrolled to this less shit level from the glue leagues or below that the vast majority of us will never even see.

Was that because their first ever game was against Mansfield?!
Was against Tranmere, the final score was 1-0 Tranmere with the winner scored by Kevin Ellison just as he was coming into his prime.

Weren't they called Ironopolis anyway? Not sure where Chris got Ironsides from.

This is all great but no matter which way you look at it, why are people rating Northampton in the top 10?! Baffled!

Worth noting Northampton haven't played in the top two tiers since the mid 1960s and are pretty much one of the most fourth division clubs to ever exist along with ourselves, Rochdale, Torquay, Hartlepool and Darlington.

Probably the most middle of the road team in English history, including the location. Happily admit they are bigger than stags but someone had them 8th :fl:
