I can’t really see it’ll make much difference to other clubs. The players they’ll be after nobody else could afford anyway.

Buying a team is fraught with problems. There’s 3 other promotion slots if they do compete.

They’ll come a cropper soon enough. 2 seasons lounging in the basement will see to that.

If any of the playoff teams needed any more motivation to win it’d be this celebrity circus being an opponent next season.

I get it won't be popular but I have no issue with Salford being promoted, most clubs seem to be running at a loss, being supported by an owner who is rich enough (or not in some cases) to sustain those losses. They've just got richer owners than most. Of course it's frustrating for those that are attempting to run a sustainable football club but these clubs seem to be few and far between.

As for this crying over losing Notts County and gaining Salford, who gives a shit? Notts probably had one of the biggest budgets at this level and they fucked it up, that isn't Salford's fault.

In the grand scheme of things all the clubs at this level are small time and lack an appeal to the wider football audience, the Salford story will hold more of an appeal to the masses so Sky will get behind it. It's not a fairy tale, far from it but there's an interesting narrative there.
This is a bannable offence right?

It's not the money that's annoying, though Salford's level of wealth is such that it will mess up the division. If they so desired they could start signing players just to keep their rivals from having them.

It's not how small or fanless Salford are either, even if they take that to new levels, they get OK attendances, provided ManU aren't playing on the same day, and given they're based in the middle of one of the biggest metropolitan areas of the country and pretty much let people in for free that's no indication of a big fan-base.

It's the combination of the two. Putting so much money into such a small club when established clubs are struggling (partly because of the greed of the PL which Neville and co. represent) just isn't good for football. If they really cared, as they claim to about lower-league and non-league football and the fans then they'd have put their money into an established club.

I think this is symptomatic of how those in the Premier League bubble view the lower leagues. They can't imagine someone actually supporting a team who aren't in the Premier League or at least in with a chance of promotion to it, so just assume that Salford are like any other lower league club, watched by a handful of fans, most of whom have a Premier League club they really support. I keep using Bury as an example because if they just wanted to set an example for affordable, and quality football, a sustainable club based in Greater Manchester and really help promote lower league football then there is absolutely no excuse for them to have put their money into Salford when Bury is right around the corner.

Anyone with that amount of money and access to the media can, it would seem, get a club into the football league and have them be wealthy by the standards there. The little Salford experiment says, why would anyone bother investing in an established football club when there are so many amateur sides without all the baggage that comes with a long history and passionate fanbase, you can simply buy out and use as the basis for forming your own club?

If other investors are like the class of 92 (who you'd expect better from) then we're heading to a world where we're all turning out in the thousands to watch amateur football, and volunteering to keep our clubs running, while the lower echelons of the football league are filled with Salfords and the like with their handful of curious ManU fans. Someone will buy out Maine Road FC to create a Man City version of Salford. South Liverpool FC will be there, Fylde and Eastleigh of course.

It's okay according to Adam Virgo because they are running the club properly because they put free coach travel on to away games, what Virgo didn't want to mention is they do this because they are desperate to get any fucker to turn up to watch them. See how many they take to Plymouth or Exeter away on a Tuesday Champions League night when Manchester United are on the tele, could be record lows.

No need to worry about that, utd aren't good enough for the champions league.

No I'd hate it and so would many other fans who understand that there's more to a football club than league position. IIRC Wimbledon fans voted down a takeover offer by Darragh MacAnthony before he bought Peterborough.

And accepting something distasteful or unjust simply because it's the way of the world is a cop out. Nothing would change for the better if every one adopted that attitude - Poverty? Just the way of the world. Racism and corruption? Ditto.
You are quite right.I'm an AFC Wimbledon supporter and we did vote down Darragh Macanthonys offer a few years back.Quite rightly as well.Anything we achieve will be be done the hard way.If that means staying around the lower leagues then so be it.

This mornings bbc sport reverted to type when they showed a 10 secs clip of their third goal and promotion.. 5 of those 10 seconds were the class of 92 celebrating in the boxes.
So original
We will have that 46 times next year
Or rather.. You will. I'm glad we are in league one away from the shithouses

They were getting gates of 200 five years ago. I wonder how many of their ‘fans’ even knew where the ground was back then. It’s all about sustainability and substance for me. If Salford’s owners decide tomorrow they don’t want to play anymore they wouldn’t see the season through. The reason my club have survived 2 admins in a decade is because there is substance there. Generations of families who are invested and who care and can drive forward movements to save something held very deeply to their hearts and their heritage. Compare that to people who started casually watching a club 5 years ago because a few celebrities put a bit of money in. The one I always go back is Rushden and Diamonds. A shallow ego trip that went bust soon after the money dried up.
Gretna are the side who always come to mind. Their owner Brookes Mileson paid for them to get to the SPL and Scottish cup final. Sadly he then popped his clogs and the club pretty much folded overnight. And judging by the fact they've managed to drum up enough interest in the town to form a phoenix club, Gretna actually had more genuine fans than Salford.

Crawley probably spent more that summer on transfer fees than Notts County did last summer.

Casey, do you have any idea what the budget was for that conference title season? It was the best team I witnessed at that level.

Not really but it was nowhere near as far ahead of everyone else as Salford's.

For instance we signed Tubbs for less than Luton offered as we paid it up front and Bulman and Pablo Mills were freebies (not in wages obviously). I believe Mansfield had a biggish budget that season and Wrexham and Grimsby had cash too ( Grimsby took our best striker from the previous season before the money came in). So although we probably did outspend everyone else it wasn't so far ahead.

Nah that was before we started spending, what about Sergio Torres? You probably didn’t match Salford for wages but fees I bet you won!

I would not call. Hartlepool tinpotters. Well supported..and I am sure they would deal with a few dickheads outside the away end. They have a tasty element following them

You are right, we are not. We had about 600 there on a Tuesday night and they kicked off at us in the ground and outside the away end. Some of our support are no shrinking violets and responded in kind. There was a bit of chew after the home game as well.

I liken it to paying Prince a million quid a week to join your shit garage band and then crowing about what a great musician you are, or buying your doctoral thesis off the internet.

The Bradley Dack comment was a half-joke, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them signing lower-level Championship players.

We played Blackburn in the league cup back in August.

Bradley Dack the best player I've seen in the flesh this season, by some distance.

Nice to see a reference to the class of 92 in there. Who of course were on the pitch yesterday beating afc fylde. Not the current players you understand. They are a byproduct of this whole pantomine

Surely another BBC taxpayers funded documentary is in the wings?
The Classless of 92 as they shall henceforth be known.

The irony is the Neville brothers are actually from Bury and their late father was the football in the community guy at Bury. So as you say mate why didn't they pump their hometown team instead of this bloody vanity project.

I tried to troll them on twitter the other day.

They posted up three kit options for next season and I said I felt two of the three were out of keeping with the traditions and styles of Manchester United.

They didn't get the joke.

Nah that was before we started spending, what about Sergio Torres? You probably didn’t match Salford for wages but fees I bet you won!

We also made attempts to get Tubbs and Mills that summer but Crawley beat us to them. I didn't realise that the Tubbs offer was rejected but Crawley must have been willing to match whatever Luton were likely to offer him in wages, which I'm guessing was high.

Michel Kuipers - Was getting on a bit but was a L1 regular for Brighton.

If I remember, they also paid undisclosed fees for players such as John Dempster from Kettering and McFadzean from Alfreton, who were both highly rated.

Richard Brodie, also, when he was good joined Crawley from York for not sure how much but think it was substantial.

They got a guy called Willie Gibson from Scotland who I'm assuming was paid well or why else would he move from Scotland to Crawley.

I'm going on vague memories and Wikipedia, but I thought Crawley paid quite a lot that season.

The Radford investment started more in 2011-2012. 2010-2011 we got to the FA Trophy final but had a very slim budget under Duncan Russell (now deceased). I think at this stage we were buying/involved in a legal dispute over Field Mill so the Radford money was going on that.

Bradley Dack has to be one of the very best players outside the premier league.

We definitely spunked loads of dosh that season. Torres was the big transfer fee with rumours of 100k. Brodie was odd, undisclosed with York saying it was 250k but people in the know at ours saying it was less than Tubbs' 60k.

The wages were not as high as people think. Ben Smith who played most of that season stated, in his book (from memory) that he was on £658 a week. An odd figure that had something to do with amalgamating his bonus payments into his basic salary as the taxman was not happy about it. It's high but not so far ahead.

Anyroad, Salford's?
