Last season, this fixture added momentum to the turnaround that had started at Newport, provided some Uche Sauce and featured a Greg Taylor goal - I misssed it all.

When I called in for a ticket this morning, whilst down Newmarket Road, they'd no terrace tickets left, only seats - not because of any rush to see a U's revival, I think they must have just sent a couple of dozen tickets.

Pay on the day means that I can have a failure of nerve and decide to give the M25 a miss right down to the wire - none of my buddies are daft enough to consider going. I think I'll have a taste of FA Cup action (the Daniels visiting City in exile at St Ives) tomorrow night then see how I feel in the morning.

Derry might have had his ear bent enough to start with a proper old style 424 with wingers -

Forde
Taylor, Legge, Howkins, Carroll
Deegan, Berry
Mingoia, Ibehre, Ikpeazu, Dunk

.......but I won't fall over in shock if he dares to revert to Jabo up top with Berry and leaves Uche on the bench.

Anticipating (hoping for?) a few goals and the first points of the season. Form suggests 1 - 1 but I've gone for a U's win on the Predicta.

Considered offering this to a single match thread but I prefer the company over here.

Back to what we're good at. Grinding out results away from home

I have going to Crawley, it's probably my least favourite trip in football, so much so that like Alan I deliberately booked a holiday over the away game last season, so of course we won. Sadly it's too early in the season to miss it this time, although as I have tickets for what is looking like a washout at the cricket tomorrow I'm starting to wish I'd gone for the Saturday instead of this....

I expect us to pick the wrong team, for it to be ugly as hell, and no more than one nil either way, and I'm going for Crawley and an uncomfortable afternoon for dear old Shaun.

We'll win this. Crawley seem destined to finish in the bottom few and Dezza has always been able to bully scrappy away wins at the lowly teams.

No point predicting the team as the Derry random team generator will fire out whatever it fancies at the time. However, I have a feeling we'll see a surprise start for either Amoo or Azeez.

Hmm, not too sure we're going to get a win here. I mean, here we are thinking they are a poor side so we can win this, while Creepy are most likely also thinking the exact same thing, and they'd have a point. Then there's our terrible H2H record and , with the exception of last years win, we hardly ever get a draw down there let alone a win. Another defeat and Derry will really start to feel the heat if he isn't already by this point, but something tells me he actually believes that none of what's happening on the pitch is his fault, 'cept when we win of course.

But I've got to stay positive, so I went for a U's win on Moosenet, a U's win on this forum's prediction league and a draw on Oakey's predicta. Should have gone for a loss on one of them so I'd be sure to get one right :animatedf:

We won a game! :) Don't care how messy or undeserved it may have been, it's all about the three points.

An attack that struggles to score and a defence that will always give you a goal. Unless something changes quickly most on here will get their wish and we will be gone.

You looked poor, but then so did we, but if I'm being honest I thought we were a tad lucky to get the win. Your back four looked like your weakest department and so I kept on wondering why we didn't put you under more pressure than we did.

TBH, I think you look like prime candidates for one of the relegation spots, but if I were Kewell I'd start with improving the defence first and foremost, as your front line didn't look all that bad and you lot could've easily scored if it weren't for Forde pulling off a couple of decent saves. You also hit the bar and post so it's fair to say you were a tad unlucky.

Yep. Came off the bench, scored the winning goal and then went off injured. He managed to do this all in less than the 10 mins he was on the pitch.

Neither side looked good and if it wasn't for Forde we'd have lost. But I'll certainly take 3 points hopefully it will start a good run of form.

Not sure how Crawley performed in their other games but today they looked like a relegation side.

Interestingly the three teams to beat Crawley in the league this season have only won one league game and that was against Crawley. Crawley must be dire and mean they are odds on for the drop even at this stage of the season.

3 points is a fair return from the first 3 matches. As other U's have said, we won but could easily have drawn if not lost. A bit like the previous 2 performances but against a crappier team - against a team that are struggling to play a manager's dream in L2 with just about L2 standard players. I was pleased to see that Cox wasn't playing and not disappointed to see Connolly having to leave the field.

My pre-season optimism is fading into a new, yet strangely familiar, comfort-zone of frustration and resignation. The Dalai Lama said, "Choose to be optimistic, it feels better." But that only works if you have the happy-clapper strength to stay optimistic in the face of solid evidence or you're allowed to change horses. I'll have to find something else to feel optimistic about - suggestions?

The plus points are a gem of a solid keeper and the Jabo/Uche combination should deliver the goals that were missing last season. The cameo showed how different and complementary they can be. The Jabo injury looked like a very painful intercostal tear and post-match it emerged that he was on the bench because of a "rib injury" on Friday - so the stretch and twist to put away the rebound from Uche's shot must have worsened existing (known) damage. If my pitch side diagnosis is right, he could be out for 3 weeks, more likely 5-6 weeks.

This search for optimism is going well.

Casey - where is Dean Cox?!

Was in the west stand yesterday. He was asked if he was injured and replyed "no".

I have no idea if he is on his way somewhere or Kewell doesn't rate him but a player of his ability to sit in the stands while we have a big lump who hardly receives a cross all game is criminal.

I might also add McNerney (decent stopper) and Kaby (defensive midfielder) are also missing for no apparent reason but luckily Jimmy Smith is injured.
