Can't find an appropriate thread for this so making one.
I was at my dad's old house earlier today, and found a journal belonging to his dad. My dad estimates that this would have been written when he was 20, so circa 1935. Can any of you decipher the teams written here? I'm trying to find out exactly when it was. I only have these 2 pictures, but I might be able to get more in a few days.

So your Dad is 102? (I think you mean 1985 instead of 1935

Would be easier to "decipher" if you could turn the photos 90 degrees ;)

My dad's dad would be 102, he died a while ago. He was born in 1914.

Right. Now I got it. I overread the "to his dad" ;)

Was your granddad a fan of Scottish football?

The other photo (13) begins with Queens Park FC (the scottish one) on the right (with a plus), Reading (-), ?, ?, Falkirk , Dunfermline....

That is a mix of english and scottish teams ...friendlies?

A single unitary authority for urban Dorset
The + and - next to many of the fixtures presumably indicates which side won/lost or which side he thought would win/lose. And those with neither sign represents a draw? A mixture of English and Scottish clubs/fixtures, although English and Scottish clubs sharing the same line in some cases suggests they may not be league fixtures. The 18 and 19 could represent the weeks of the season maybe?

Brilliant find btw.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm pretty sure the numbers at the top represent the page number, but he might have done one page per week.

He was doing the football pools.
IIRC these were issued as 'week number x' so it's fair to assume that's what the number at the top of the page is.
There were a number of 'perms' you could do - 8 home wins was one of the most popular but rarely paid out big money, 5 away wins was more tricky and I remember getting a £26 payout on a one shilling stake (520/1). About a weeks wages at the time (fuck I'm old!).

That page titled '13' is interesting. The teams I can identify in the '8 homes' list are Queens Park, Reading, Charlton, Watford, Falkirk, Dunfermline, Third Lanark and one other. So many Scottish teams and English teams that were in the lower leagues in the 1930's suggests it was either a cup weekend or there were international matches. It might be easier to identify that weekend than the others.

When do you estimate this could have been?

Best match I could see (without some serious research) is 22nd November 1930 when Wales were playing England at Wrexham.

Watford (vs Torquay), Falkirk (vs Aberdeen) and Third Lanark (vs Clydebank) were all at definitely at home but those are the only ones my friend google could find as fixture detail that far back is the province of nerds rather than archivists.
