Can’t believe we’ve managed to get to half time at 0-0 playing with ten men against that Palace team. Superb.

Can see you winning this.

Well VAR is on trial at 9 ties this weekend and it's fucked us over. Fox challenges Townsend, ref waves play on, Townsend rolls around for 5 minutes till Palace kick it out. Ref comes back and gives yellow to Fox, then a minute late changes it to red after checking VAR. Not seen it again so can't comment on how bad it was but without VAR it would have stayed yellow.

Never the less we have basically defended for 45 mins heroically with a couple of decent saves from McKeown as usual, could have even nicked a goal if Thomas could quite reach a cross.

Can't see us defending backs to the wall for another 45 unfortunately. But it won't be through lack of effort

Seeing the challenge again, it was most likely a red although you see them get away with a yellow a lot of the time. The fact the ref waved play on and some good time had passed before the red was given leaves a bitter taste but we've handled Palace tremendously well so far. I think we can continue to eat up their pressure on the edge of the box but if they give us space to get out of our half and hit us on the counter, I can see us getting hurt. A proud performance so far.

I am so proud of the lads today. A huge effort where the players just kept going despite being knackered. After a poor start I was thinking cricket score was on the cards. Everton couldn't finish and really couldn't defend crosses. Gutted about that final wasted corner, but doesn't mark what was a brilliant performance. Rest needed!

Meanwhile, Grimsby are playing heroically here. Fortunately for them palace are pretty shite going forward.

If Grimsby hold on, does that mean they have a replay Tuesday fixture before our game? :animatedf:

What a performance from us. With no recognised centre backs and 10 men the entire game, the fact we only conceded one is incredible. It's obviously gutting with it being so late but we had no right getting a result in that game. Would have been amazing to get one but you won't find any Town fans with a lack of pride after that.

My lad just texted me he said the Palace fans are taunting our fans trying to get a reaction, fucking hell they just won 1-0 against a League 2 team with 10 men for 88 mins the bunch of fucking melts.

Gutted to lose so late but hey ho, 10 man only 2 defenders both out of position and gave it a good go.

An absolutely stunning performance. It’s brilliant anyway, but with 10 men and with no Centre backs OR left backs to take them that far is magnificent.

What's pleasing about the performance is that it was very similar to the Exeter one. It wasn't just a one off for a big game, it's becoming a consistent thing how resilient we are. To stay so organised with that many players out of position shows just how good a manager Michael Jolley is becoming. I hope he gets the backing he deserves off the board this month.

How about Zaha being in Mitch Rose's pocket all game? You could say it was his brother Danny and you'd be none the wiser.

Fair play to Grimsby and Lincoln for not rolling over and being nice like we did. Doesn’t look like any L2 teams causing upsets though unfortunately.

Very disappointed with our fellow league 2 clubs today for giving their prem opposition a proper game and losing by the odd goal. Thanks for rubbing in just how bad last night was.

Hoping for better etiquette from Newport and Oldham tomorrow.

Cracking effort by Grimsby, was genuinely gutted to see them lose it late after that effort but can be proud none the less of their performance.

Decent effort by Lincoln to recover from two early goals to make a game of it at Goodison too!

I'm not going. It's nailed on we win.

Seriously though if you had to choose any premier league team to play at the moment alot of people would chose Fulham. They ain't in a good place at the moment and theirs a reason sky sports analysis had us down as one of the potential banana skins.

Throw in the fairy tail of a fan managing us at the moment, and the romance of the cup, it's all there.

That said, it's gunna be a cricket score for fulham

Top day out at Goodison today- fantastic away end, players left everything on the pitch. Home fans were exceptional. Friendly, honest, genuine and no hint of trouble anywhere. They applauded us off the pitch!!

Excitement of the cup finished with- back to the league now

It was a hugely impressive defensive performance, in fact, one of the best for years. We rode our luck a little at times but what was very noticeable was the level of organisation - every player knew his job, the work rate was outstanding and positioning and zonal marking to negate the man advantage really intelligent.

As for the first 2 minutes, Fox merely introduced himself to Townsend the way that Bobby Cumming used to say "how do you do I'm Bobby" to the opposing winger in the first few minutes of a game. I think it was a traditional Lincolnshire / Scottish welcome...

Sadly, the VAR role in the game is now making the game even more like our credit cards...

Great stuff. Sound a better experience than when we went to Anfield. Always thought the Toffees were a class act.

No way, you beat Liverpool!? Why didn't you tell us. Please tell us more.

We’ve beaten Liverpool and Everton away in recent times, if anybody wants to hear about it let me know.

Really proud of our lot yesterday. The red was definitely a red, and Atkinson would have given it as a straight red if it has been on 35 minutes or something I'm sure. VAR is gonna make those leniant early yellows a thing of the past though. In a funny way that actually helped us keep Palace at bay. It meant we set up camp in our own half and made it really difficult for them. Galvanised the support too as Townsend got a torrent of abuse all game.

Frustrating to get so close to a replay especially as I was just starting to believe we might hold out, but it wasn't to be. On another day those two shots that hit the post and the one cleared off the line go in and we're facing a bit of a (tran)mare.

Slightly disagree on the red, those lenient things should be allowed at times. Atkinson would’ve used the logic that were 1 min into a game, he’s hyped up and has just got caught up in his first challenge playing at a Premier League ground. That logic is now taken away by VAR.

Timing shouldn't really come into but sometimes you do get refs letting some go if its really early..

Whilst I get your thinking, for me it's one of those really frustrating things in football. The punishment for some offences changes in relation to how far into the game they occur, which is just plain wrong.
Pleased for Grimsby putting in a real good effort against one of the PL clubs. Regardless of the final result, it proves that 11 v 11 isn't always about who has the bigger wallet.

That's kind of what what I'm saying. Unless you're disagreeing that it wasn't a red at all? As a stand alone foul it was a red for sure, in my opinion. Atkinson seemed happy to put into context but got overruled by someone in his ear. Probably someone who is buzzing to be doing VAR and wanted to get in on the action.

I think if it was a horrific tackle and a red without any sort of debate to be had, there would be no complaints. It wasn't a good tackle, it was off the ground and slightly high but it wasn't sickening. It wasn't much different to Kompany's the other night. I don't think anybody would've seriously complained if he was given the yellow there. 90% of the time you're given the benefit of the doubt and a reminder to calm down. As SoC said it seems like VAR was used purely for the sake of it as opposed to correcting a clear and obvious error.

There's no way of knowing if we'd have gotten a result with 11 men, yeah we'd have probably opened up a bit more and they'd have devastated us on the counter. So no complaints from me either way. What I will say is if it was the other way around and their player was only given a yellow, as the lower league side we would probably be raging if no red was given and it would be a much bigger case of "what if".

Is it wrong though? Surely logic comes into it, I 100% think it’s a ‘red card challenge’. But the best refs take all factors into account and the VAR decision took that away. Atkinson saw it because he carded him, he likely took common sense into account, that common sense was taken away in order for him to follow the rules. It’s similar to handballs, VAR will rule everything as a ‘handball’ but the situation in which it happens will be taken away.

If Fox does that after the game has settled (ie past the first 90 seconds) then fine, but I think there are a lot of factors VAR didn’t take into account.

FWIW I don’t think it made that much difference to us, it stopped any attacking threat we’d have but defensively Jolley says our defensive shape wasn’t affected.
