Vale 3 Cheltenham 1... finally get a second win of the season and Aspos first in style.

Vale could have scored a few more such was the improvement after a week of Aspo and Rudge to move out the drop zone. Pope scoring two like his old self and hopefully that’s the straw that breaks the camels back after leading in recent weeks but not seeing it out.

Bring on Morecambe!

And FGR and Chesterfield lost, huge game against Morecambe now, win that and we will at least close in on the mid table stragglers like Barnet, Morecambe and Crewe ahead of two tough games at Exeter and at home to Swindon.

Not just lost either, men against boys seems to be the common phrase. Ever the optimist thought last Sat might be our turning point but more of a County off day it seems.

County were dreadful at our place but nicked a 1-0 after we hit the woodwork and had two off the line (one apparently over) but hoping we can build now Tuesday. You need to sack off Cooper to be fair you were decent second half at our place but playing football from the back at this level is dangerous.

I've wobbled about over this as I can't think of obvious better candidates and I like the sort of football he tries to play but he clearly has man management failings and has to take the blame for poor recruitment. It is hard now to see him turning anything round and if we stumble on to Jan we'll be too far adrift to just chuck money at the problem plus don't think it's there to be chucked anyway.

Wasn’t able to go today due to working nights all this week but absolutely delighted with that result. Sounds thoroughly deserved too. This squad is still substandard and it’s a case of battle through to January but if ever a team needed a win today it was us.

Note that Gibbons had a hand in the opening goal, he really impressed me last week too so definitely someone to work with there. Good on Aspo changing the midfield too it seems, last week didn’t work. A manager who learns from previous mistakes is a novel concept.

3-0 up and we sent on a third striker too! I can’t handle this positive approach after the turgid negativity of Page, Bruno and Brown!

Sounds like we didn't turn up, and were beaten to everything. It's never good when the other team want it more.

With that being said, it's our first defeat in 6, and we tend to be shocking away from home anyway (Chesterfield aside) so we go again on Tuesday at home to Grimsby.

I don't think you were shocking, you had a few decent players & knocked it about ok, but aside from a point blank effort just after ht and the last 2 minutes didn't really threaten.
Apart from a wobbly opening 15 I thought vale were immense.
Worral and Whitfield had energy to burn, with plenty of quality, pope could've had 4.
What's with a manager identifying faults and rectifying it?
I hope we've turned a corner, we still look a bit fragile which is understandable, but I feel a lot more confident of us going up the table.

To be honest we hadn’t been far away in games, as bad as it had been six of our nine losses were by the odd goal and we’ve been in games just failing to find the net and making the odd silly mistake at the back being the difference.

1-0 at half time and the worries of last week and Accrington/FGR come back where we had tired off but seems we kept up the energy levels well.

Pope has had his knockers but he isn’t doing anything better or worse now than prior to this spell of 4 in 5 games but the way Aspin sets up the one up front allows players to support him so isn’t isolated and can cause havoc. That second he scored was almost like the goal on sky against Wimbledon in the promotion season and the header was sublime. Gibbons looks a real talent coming through.

Hopefully we see the confidence improve and can push on and open a gap from the bottom two now.

Liking this new found optimism from Vale fans, slightly different to last week on your forum with some fans saying you were already relegated after Aspin had had just 1 game in charge ffs. :ffs:

Most fans were fairly positive after the game to be fair, just worried about the lack of fitness and acknowledged how little time Aspo has had.

We’ve shown seeds of a turnaround (Stevenage aside) since Brown left.

Two more games yet to see if it’s form. Must beat Morecambe to really push ourselves out of it but Exeter Away will be a tough one.

Our away form seems quite decent so I may make the trip to Burslem for this one.

Be a good marker of our progression this game. At least we’ve actually managed to pick up a few points against you in the last four meetings after getting none in the 3000 years before hand!

Usually plenty of goals against you guys. Think we came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 about 10 years ago at VP and we've given you a few hiding at the CG. Hardly dull (apart from the game last season!)

The 3-3 was a great game, cost us a play off spot that in the end! You had Mooney and Fallon i think up top and we had Brooker and McPhee, two really good attacking sides. Think we hit the post at 3-2 too if I recall!

I think we went 26 without a win in our relegation season. Such a great feeling when you get that win that stops the rot.

And if I remember right that win was 3-0 v Shrewsbury and a certain Joe Hart in goal for them.

One vale fan is generally populated with morons, not indicative of our fanbase.

You'd be made welcome in the leopard or the bulls head both gluepot-esq pubs.
I'll never understand how we've had so much mither with oxford down the years and zero with Swindon, must be a better class of fan.
That 3-3 was a classic, fallon chested the equaliser in from 2 inch out as I remember.

It also is a shite name for a forum, as it implies that there is only one fan of Port Vale.

It was originally onevalefan in Bristol after the founder set it up IIRC. It’s a very negative section of fan base on there though. After a first win in 12 with a decent performance some we’re more bothered about the last minute consolation goal we let in that the win!

In fairness there's not exactly been a great deal to be positive for the last couple of years in general. Save for the odd happy-clapper it's been pretty obvious the hole this club has dug itself into, people are justified in pointing it out.

Don’t disagree in the slightest but sometimes it has gone over the top on there. Pope has been slaughtered despite being completely isolated up front under Brown, destroying the idea of Askey when in fairness he’s from a similar position to Aspin (glad we got Aspin but my point is that people were ready to shoot it down had it happened without a chance).

The Black and Gold campaign was all great and that came from there didn’t it but since it’s just over the top. You could argue it has caused some of Smurfs outbursts and actions which haven’t been helpful regardless of people’s thoughts on him. It’s obvious we are up shit creek if he does just leave us as he won’t accept a realistic selling price and if he did would want his money back by calling in loans, so making an enemy in him wouldn’t benefit the club.

Don’t get me wrong plenty of good posters on there but some just breed negativity which doesn’t overly help.

I can imagine a few on there are slightly gutted the Pontiff left them with egg on their face yesterday...

Thanks Randolph. I occasionally go to the gluepot pre-match, get some good chats with fellow fans there.

I guess there are idiots who try and cause bother at all clubs, glad to hear there hasn't been many incidents with our fans, hopefully that doesn't change.

What's the best route to get to your ground? Do I travel to Stoke-on-Trent railway station?

You can go into Stoke on Trent but that then requires a taxi or a couple of buses. (used to have to change at Hanley when I used to go before learning to drive but this was a good few years back). Taxi wise its a good 4 or 5 miles so about £10.00 each way id have thought.

Alternatively you can change trains at Stoke on Trent and get the Crewe train which runs hourly but stops at Longport which is a 20-25 minute walk from Vale Park (think after the game it leaves about 17:25 so doable for the return.

Thanks VF. Unfortunately I think I have left it too late to get reasonably priced train tickets so its 50/50 at the moment.
