Massively underrated footballer to be fair though.

Joey Barton, a convicted criminal with no coaching experience, walks into a managerial job with no formal recruitment process, because he's friends with the owner. A lot of people don't understand the point of the Rooney Rule. This is exactly what it's for.

I have no insider knowledge, so this is only what I have heard and summised.

John Sheridan was appointed following Rosler's departure UNTIL the end of the season, his task was to keep the Cods in the division, and has done this to great effect. The Cods have a 'directer of football' who along with the Chairman and the coach decide on players incoming and outgoing. The important part is that the person is classed as the coach and not the manager. John may or may not have been offered a longer term position but it would have been on this basis, a role that he may of felt did not suit his style.

Joey Barton is a good friend of the Chairman, other than that I don't know of any other rationale for his appointment. Like others have stated Joey, as a footballer, seemed to operate on a razors edge between brilliance and lunacy, it will be certainly interesting to see how this translates to team management.

Fairly certain that there will not have been many Cods fans who saw this coming and it is not a 'sit on the fence' appointment for them, it will be either love it or hate it. For me I have an open mind, but leaning to it ending in tears sooner rather than later.
A Chairman, presumably from a non-football background in terms of playing etc, to have a say on who comes in and goes out? Can't see that ending well.

What's the Rooney rule got to do with Joey Barton getting the Fleetwood job?

Wow. They get a manager who gets them back on track and sack him. And replace him with someone with no coaching experience, no experience of the league and a very abrasive character likely to rub the tea lady up the wrong way, let alone the players. Think this will end in tears for the cod army, but what do the fans think?
Is this a stroke of genius by Pilley or a the biggest mistake in his stewardship of Fleetwood ? When Sheridan was appointed back in January there were plenty on here who said he would do no good and a waste of space ( or words to that effect ) well he has proved everybody wrong and fair play to him. He will leave with all the Cod Army wishing him well, and a nice bonus for keeping Fleetwood in league 1
Barton's appointment will have split the fans and I have very mixed feelings, the most extraordinary thing about this is he has been given a 3 year contract which beggars belief for a guy brand new to mangement. If he does well other clubs will come after him ( beware you lads who have called him -he may be your next gaffer ) a bad run like Rosler had and he will be out, either way there is no way he will be here in 3 years BUT I do wish him well simply because he is manager of Fleetwood Town Football Club

Exactly.

Had a point on the other stuff, but the Rooney Rule has nothing to do with it.

Can see Shez rocking up at Bury next season...

I wouldn't particularly want Sheridan, but even if he was perfectly made for the job our chairman wouldn't appoint him. He needs to make a name for himself when appointing managers, he needs to tell a dozen lies, chat a tonne of shit, make three or four embarrassing statements and then pluck some has been out of nowhere and spin a tonne of bullshit about how he, Stewart Day, the greatest chairman in the history of Bury Football Club headhunted said manager and appointed him.

Deluded on the pitch to think he was the best English midfielder and will no doubt think he is the best manager in the country. Interested to see how he deals with the fans getting on his back when results don't go his way.

He'll have to fight Sol Campbell to claim to be the best manager in the country.
