I always thought it was a pity there wasn't a general thread for the Championship where people could post stuff of general interest about the Championship, because many are reluctant to post a new thread for just a little snippet about something. If it's about transfers or away followings or MK Dons, there's an obvious thread, but for many other topics, there isn't. Maybe this will work. Maybe it'll just get ignored.

The Express & Star, Wolverhampton's unbiased local bastion of journalistic quality and winner of as many Pulitzer Prizes as any other West Midlands newspaper, is doing an 'old matches' series with the match reports from games in history. Probably as interesting reading for other fans as for Wolves fans.

They are starting it with the May 8th 1972 clash between Wolves and Leeds. This game will be much longer remembered in Leeds than Wolverhampton, as the Wolves win denied Leeds their second League title in three years. A number of Leeds players have described it as the worst night in their lives, despite winning the FA Cup just two days earlier. Leeds only had to avoid losing to take the title, but Wolves won 2-1 in front of a fairly decent 53,000 people. There's a much better review of the game (from a Leeds perspective) here.

Edit: Thread title changed to reflect all the valuable contributions SERNWA makes to the Championship forum when he's not answering peoples' mobile phone account queries.

I saw this earlier. Obviously I wasn't alive at the time but my dad told me once that apparently Leeds tried to bribe us to lose the game in question, as it didn't mean much to us as it did to Leeds winning the title as you say. Might have been BS mind but it's always nice to stop a Don Revie Leeds from winning something. Some of their players back then made Karl Henry and Kevin Muscat look like saints

So it's the Derby thread then? Is Milton Keynes in the East Midlands? Guess that's your big derby match now.

Possible Wolves target, Joe Mason, doesn't use his Twitter account a lot, but I can't get over the wisdom, depth and sheer classic magnitude of his last posting on 29th April 2012: "Beans on toast then off to bed, night people".

If you can write prose like that, you're really not going to have to worry too much about a career post-football, are you? Who cares if he doesn't score goals every season. I say sign him up now!

Some say we are East Midlands, TV regions lump us with East Anglia and others call us south east so I haven't got a clue. Where do Northampton and Luton regard themselves as residing as we are in between :bg:

They consider themselves as South London. Between Surbiton and Wandsworth.

Just want to point out that we beat a French third division side 3-2 today. So our signings are working well.

I think only Conor Coady played out of the new signings, Jed Wallace was injured for it. I'd like to see more of this Jordan Graham next season hearing good reviews on him

Just read somewhere that the oldest player on Wolves' books now is Dave Edwards who is only 29. With the majority of our players being only 20-23 yrs old, does anyone else have a younger squad?

Ours is a similar age, with only Douglas and McCormack being oldies now, and both potentially likely to move on this year. Most of our starting XI is 20-23 (Odubajo, Dean, Tarkowski, Bidwell, Jota, Gray, McEachran, etc)

I believe we had the youngest playing squad under Adkins last season, and it showed, was a mess.. Not a surprise that almost all of Clarke's signings have been 27+. Think it's just Jonathan Bond and the two Chelsea loanees last season who were younger than that.

Prefer it that way too. Makes no sense buying 22/23 year olds when we have 18-20 year olds ready to step up. Buy too young and you are just stopping their opportunities. At least by buying older players they'll fade out as the youth players fade into first team opportunities.

Very encouraged from this, I think we were all expecting KJ to play 10 men behind the ball for the remaining 45 games in order to draw every game to reach 48 points. Such ambition were showing, maybe we can even dream about beating Newport now?

Given that's rumored to be around what QPR received for Sterling in the sell on its very convenient, and must mean its time for QPR to start spending again.

Can see it tomorrow, QPR bid £10m for Andre Gray

Sadly it looks like Razak Boukari's career looks like it is at an end as he picked up another injury on his return to the under 21's last night.

Most of you probably don't know him, but he was once a £3mill signing for us from Sochaux in France at the same time we got Bakary Sako, and he was supposed to be the better one of the 2. Sadly he has had insanely bad luck with injuries (his last game for us was in September 2012 against Sheffield Wednesday) and has been injured for what is essentially the past 36 months with a torn in half hamstring, and has only played 4 games in 3 years for us.

I think it will see the retirement of him from the game, can't see him ever recovering from the latest setback. Good luck to him on whatever he chooses to do next, but looking at it from the club perspective, we've spent £3m in transfer fees and 20k+ a week in wages for a guy who's played 4 games in 3 years encouting... insanity

I'm sure you will all be delighted to know Pete Winkleman has been awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Milton Keynes.

“Describing him as a local legend seems like a massive understatement – he really is up there with the likes of the late Jim Marshall and Dame Cleo Laine, both of whom were also awarded the Freedom of the Borough.

This reminds me of that joke about a bloke receiving the world's first arsehole transplant, but tragically the arsehole rejected him. Don't know why.

Our stadium will probably be getting renamed at some point soon, our owners have confirmed. Guessing we'll be looking to generate £1m+ per season for the sponsorship. Just hopefully we don't end up with a terrible name..

That'd make it the most lucrative in the Football League. Our 700k per season from iPro is currently the most.
