Nice fixture to settle us into the season. Believe Oxford have recruited well this year and are among the front runners in some quarters. However being the first game it will be us that have the advantage here I reckon with us being able to field a squad that's had minimal changes through the summer. A settled side often starts well and although we are yet to sign a keeper ( gutted the Ripley deal didn't come off) we had an awsome defence last year and I'm hoping we can continue that.

People have us down as finishing bottom this year but I think we may surprise a few. Top half finish with the target of play offs.

For this one I'll go latics 1-0

I don't think we have recruited that well but I always expect us to beat the Manchester teams. I'll go for a 3-0 away win.

Oxford have never won at Boundary Park.

Oldham have won the last 8 home meetings in a row.

I remember freezing my South Midlands nuts off on several occasions at Boundary Park in the 90's and have never seen us win there. Would be glad of a score draw given the amount of change over the summer. 1-1.

I'm told the players aren't their normal selves in pre-season. The players were jovial and in good spirits under Appleton however that has changed since Pep's appointment. On balance however, that's largely understandable when you lose your Manager, Captain and top goalscorer in the space of a month!

A few wins will put that right *hopefully*. However we still have a lot of work to do in securing a left back (which I'm inclined to think won't materialise) and a centre forward, which I believe there is a solid chance may not materialise.

Who bloody knows how we will do!

Tell you what, we're gonna be a bastard of a team to play against this season.

Clarke and Gerrard are the two hardest blokes in this league at centre back.

Fane plays like the Tasmanian Devil, when he's running towards you all you can see is a whirlwind of limbs. Welsh if we get him is a tough customer.

Then up front all our choices are physical. Amadi-Holloway is so strong, could come into his own this seaosn as a target man. Davies is all sinew, and is a prick. But he's our prick again now. New boy Duffus is built like a thoroughbred horse. Obadeyi is also strong and pacy.

Pep, get your set piece drills running!

It can't be any worse than last season!

It really can't. We failed to score at home more often than we managed to actually score.

Oh, not saying it won't be effective. It probably will be, just not pleasant on the eye or the shins if you're the opposition.

As much as I love Clarke and Gerrard, they were made to look unbeatable by ripley last year. Be interesting to see how we get on with a new keeper.

I confidently predict an Oldham win as we pretty much always lose at Boundary Park. We could have a squad made up of the best players in the world and we'd lose.

At least there will be grass on the pitch this season though when we play. :bg:

Offside by a country mile
Didn't think so myself. Very frustrating day, couple of comically missed chances, bit Oxford worth their win on the day. Played well with and without the ball, pressing well.

Oldham fan confidently predicting a win-to-nil when his team had no professional goalkeeper goes down as a strong contender for worst shout of the season.

Payne sounded fantastic, seen the 2 assists and they were very good

Henry and Williamson seem like really good experienced additions, Williamson sounding like an absolute mountain at the back which we lacked last season (Dunkley a bit too soft at times, despite his build)

Overall a great start to the season

WE'RE DEFINITELY GOING UP

Got to give credit to Thomas and Ruffles too, neither of them I wanted to start but both showed they deserved it, fair play to the both of them

Goal was definitely offside was smack bang in line with it.

As for our performance upfront we are too similar. Both need a poacher/runner playing off them. We didn't challenge the keeper all day. We controlled large amounts of possession and did bog all with it. Aimless punts getting us nowhere. Oxford did what they needed to do and took their chances when they came.

As for the goalkeeper remark, surprisingly that wasn't the issue today. No creativity through the middle and no finisher up top to play off Holloway or Davies will cost us. It wasn't a bad performance that cost us today it was not having key figures in the team.
