It's more to do with the fact that it's been left to the last minute in the first place. We knew all summer long that Mo was going, his replacement should have been in before he was even gone - especially as he's gone to bleeding Bristol City - how could Johnson claim he was sold too late when he sold him to his bastard son.

Something stinks, and Johnson is in for a pelting off the fans over this, and I struggle to defend him.

Some absolute bollocks being spouted on twitter, some guy reckons Luque is signing for us instead of Lincoln after our offer 'blew theirs out of the water'.
What a load of fucking shite.

IMO, this is a mistake that fans including myself often make. So the fans know that it's a question of time and not if that player X will be leaving the club, but that doesn't mean the club should have brought in his replacement already, only big PL sides can afford to do that. Identifying potential replacements for when the time comes is a good idea, but there's no guarantee the club will be able to get one of the players they've targeted, for obvious reasons.

Si, in your previous post you said '... the Rowe deal isn't going through and we've not bothered trying for anyone else'. Looks to me to be the right thing to do as that implies the club think they'll only be wasting away their money on somebody else who'll only be signed just because they couldn't get their main target. Or it could also imply the 'affordable' strikers that are available right now are no better than the ones you've already got.

Peter Vicenti signs from Coventry. Does anyone know if he's any good? We certainly needed to sign another winger.

He has had a longer trial than OJ Simpson. Signed from Heybridge which is 4 levels below league 2? Think he scored 30 goals and 18 assists last season so will be interesting to see how he does in his 6 months. Could go either way but we don't normally get any ex Barcelona academy players signing at SB!

Scored a fair few for Rochdale in League 1. Doesn't seem to have worked out for him at Coventry but a good signing on the face of it.

Peter Vincenti, he was at Rochdale for some 5 years iirc, and was highly rated at the time. Then he joined Coventry but I think he was out injured for quite some time. I only recall this as Coventry also had another decent winger out at the time (Jodi Jones).

He may be getting on a bit now, but if he's over his injury concerns then he should be a decent signing for you lot.

We had him on loan in about 2009/10 and I still would pick him out as the worst player I’ve ever seen play for us. He’s gone on to play in the Football League every season since though so he must have something about him.

Lee Angol to Shrewsbury confirmed

Personally disappointed but majority of Staggies will likely disagree with that, I imagine we have at the very least recouped the fee we paid so that's good.

Soon to be 35 but vastly experienced, don't think he has ever played down in league two so should be good enough with our other younger CB's. 6 foot 3 so that will please the Swindon massive MB fears about a Sincil bombardment on Saturday (even though we have numerous smaller players!)

Of course Macclesfield would sign a midfielder who loves scoring/setting up goals against us. Peter Vincenti is the new Ross Draper ffs.

Incoming 1-0 shithouse job at Gresty Road in a few weeks time then.

The smaller ones are the guys who knock the ball long to the big lads

Happy with Vincenti.

The team is definitely stronger than the one that won the Conference.

I'm guessing it was peanuts, but to sign a player for a fee and only give him a 6-month deal seems weird.

Pleased with Shackell. Adds some experience to a young back line, captained everywhere he's been and has promotions on his CV, too.

Do yer think so? I'm not sure. I think Danny Whitehead is a huge loss. Not convinced about either/both of Kelleher and Grimes being better than Lowe & Pilks, or Rose better than Mitch. Would agree Smith looks an upgrade on Bliss though, and can't say just yet whether Taylor will prove to be better than Jalal over a season.

What a c*** of a transfer window we have had. Palios best have something lined up. Jay Harris is never good enough to start every game (to match our ambition) and still failed to sort our front line. 5 hours to pull a rabbit out the hat.
I agree. We actually look weaker at centre midfield and centre forward than we did at the end of last season, so I have no idea why the chairman has been talking our chances up the whole summer.

We clearly have not made the progress off the pitch that everyone has been led to believe.

There is nothing wrong with most of the players Mellon has brought in, but his hands are tied.

It always seemed like Angol never had a proper run of games with a consistent strike partner. Looked a handful in the little of what I saw of him

Norburn had stopped training in an effort to move so was right for him to move on. No point in keeping an unhappy player when we can get upward of £200k for him as he'd simply go for a free next Summer. Granted it's frustrating not to get someone in straight away but why waste the majority of that cash on someone that might not be the right fit when a good loan signing will probably come up in the next 3 weeks that has been thoroughly looked in to?

Not disappointed to be losing Angol. He does have ability but his attitude is a problem. He’s right he does need to be playing games but last season Hemmings and Rose were better than him. I thought with the style we are trying to play he’d of had a better season this time round but he’s still 3rd/4th choice.

Not sure what we got for him but we paid over 150k only last Summer so hopefully at least got that back, Radford did say last week he values him and Rose at 300k at least but I can’t see Shrews paying that.

Loan signings are hit or miss and I would rather we had had a replacement lined up weeks ago. If we were hanging on until deadline day to squeeze another twenty grand out of Shrewsbury with nobody coming the other way, that does not look like good business to me.

As it stands, our only two experienced midfield players are Banks and Harris, who probably is not good enough at this level.

It is not just the Norburn sale. The loss of Cook and Clarke and the failure to get Rowe and Ferrier suggests there is not much money around.

I agree.

People take his style of play in a way that he does not care, does not put in enough effort etc.

An Oldham view on Gerrard from their forum.

'I wouldn't play Gerrard again if he offered to play for free and we only had three fit defenders '
He's not a bad player honestly. In fact when he puts the effort in, such as when he wants to prove himself after signing for a new club, he'll look bloody great. But acrimonious exits have a way of colouring football fans' memories!

Agree about potentially having a couple of players lined up but they may also have been taken by other clubs. Shrewsbury only went for Norburn today because they lost Nolan to Ipswich so it was all last minute.

Rowe was going to cost between £250k-£300k and Ferrier didn't want to make the move up to Tranmere anyway. Plus we have money coming through now with the sale of Max Power from Wigan to Sunderland which is another £100k... Mark and Nicola have only ever put the club first and you can be sure that they're doing that now too.

I am not sure that is true about Ferrier as he moved to Walsall in the end, but I agree we were never going to match the Rowe fee.

We know the owners' hearts are in the right place, but I'd have thought we would have made more progress financially after 3-4 years of their ownership than we seem to have done. If finances are tight, I don't know why Palios talked up a promotion challenge over the summer as it just puts added pressure on Mellon.

I think he suffered from the weight of expectations at Field Mill last season. Written off too quickly by fans and management
