And out goes Aspin.

What a car crash of a situation, no pun against Smurf intended. Why leave it this late? So the new man has to try and get the best out of what in my opinion is a dreadful squad full of average/poor players and virtually no goalscorers? No chance to make any personnel changes, basically come up and hope the new guys coaching and change of tactics can spark a revival. Clown show.

I don't think the Vale will go down as it only takes one run of results to pull clear of the bottom 2. But god whoever takes over has a tough job on his hands.
I don't think our squad is any worse than most of the division (including yours) and that if we had a decent manager and a normal owner we would be midtable at least.

The reason it's been left so late is so that the clown in charge doesn't have to see through his 400k pledge.

I think Askey will be appointed early tomorrow morning and we'll sign a striker on loan before the deadline.

Could see Askey going after Kristian Dennis. Also how's your left back? Sadly looks like David Fitzpatrick is on his way out from Macc, would expect Askey to take him too if given the chance.
Left Back is arguably one of our best players in Mitch Clark on loan from Villa.

We offered some weird deal to Chesterfield for Dennis in the summer - 5k/gaol I believe - so maybe someone we look at again.

Left back - youngster on loan from Villa who has generally done well.

Gonna be a big 24 hours.

Squad is far better on paper than last year... Tonge and Pugh in central midfield... Jesus.

Just has not been utilised correctly. 5 centre halves most home games on the field.... Play the right pegs in the correct holes and it would be ok.

He would have been a cheap signing with the service he would of got this season!

I've said it before, but where are your goalscorers?

Our squad is bang average but we had 2 guy's last season who finished in double figures(Bowery and Porter), one who averaged a goal every 2 starts on loan(Miller), one who managed 8 on a relegated Barnet team(Nicholls) and 2 more who finished on 5(Kirk and Ainley). Plus we had a returning James Jones, who finished on 10 2 seasons ago.

And that's not me dick measuring or claiming our squad is better than yours. I'm just wondering where your goalscoring pedigree is outside of Pope exactly? Because you have a lot of players who's career highs are 4s and 5s. In fact, bar Pope, do any of your squad have any season where they put up double figures in the FL, even once?

You guys know your own players better than I do of course, but all this talk of you being capable of mid-table just seems to fly in the face of the evidence. You finished 20th with the 5th lowest goals in the division last season(and 2 of the teams below you got relegated). You seemingly did nothing to add goals to the team and lo and behold, your strike force is once again struggling.

Can you convince me your attack is actually better than what they've shown for the last 18 months. Tell me, outside of Pope, who is capable of double figures and why your attack is capable of getting you into mid-table?

We were linked to Kewell too after Dunne's sacking and a good number of U's fans didn't want him here. Now I don't read the Vale forum but it looks like the Vale fans on this board do not want him either.

I'm in no way an expert on managers but didn't Kewell do a good better than expected job at Crawley with limited resources ie. transfer funds? I don't think he (or Nolan or Eardley for that matter) should be judged on his/their time at Notts. Everything's going wrong at County right now and even Klopp or Pep would probably have a hard time turning things around.

Kewells win percentage wasn't that good at Crawley. That and some moaning he did about us means hes not seen as the the solution to our problems.

Agreed, but Crawley were everybody's favourites for the drop. Some were even saying they'll be lucky to get something like 25 points with the squad they had at the time.

edit - and another thing. I know I said it's unfair to judge him on his time at county, but his record there is actually better than Eardley's. Kewell's record is 3-4-7 (21.4%) while Eardley's on 1-4-7 (8.3%) so far.

To be blunt he’s just dislikable.

When we beat Crawley 3-1 last year he slated us, think he moaned about the length of the grass when we beat them this season and strangely thought Notts County deserved to beat us after our draw this season in a game we dominated. It doesn’t bode well if your not honest about your team in terms of sorting failings out.

If I had my choice on it I would bring in an experienced man until the end of the season and take our time regarding a long term appointment and make sure we get it right rather than rushing but doesn’t look as though it’s to happen.

I’d take Adams back if he would come to steady things and get us through to May or someone like Allen or Horton even and really go out to get a long term appointment right over the coming months.

There is more to a team than attack but our bluntness is as much down to the negative set up especially at home. You’ve scored six more than us but don’t play five centre halves at home for example.

We do need another 10 goal man to partner Pope... Miller with 40 games on or Whitfield regularly maybe able to but neither have had a full run in the team. Will Harris now? Time will tell.

Last season we managed to stay up with a far worse squad, and we were pretty comfortably mid table and in mid table form for the first four months of the season. It’s the last six weeks that have let us down.

what sort of football can we expect if hes given the job?
As SSS says he prefers 4-5-1 but the two wide in the 5 will very much be wingers first and foremost, but expected to get in the right shape when needed defensively. Will have players in the middle who can keep the ball ticking over and then use the wide men to create space further forward so the central front man has room to hold the ball up but have plenty of options when he does.

He's never really been one to make drastic changes during games, but isn't afraid to change personnel and tweak formations from game to game depending on the opposition.

His first year or two in charge of us were pretty drab affairs in all honesty but with such a small budget his hands were tied and now looking back he did a ridiculously good job of shaping the squad and players he wanted/needed on an annual basis culminating in last season's success.

Of course he's got his family connections with you lot as well so will genuinely care about the job and the club. Personally I always thought the step up to Shrews would be too much for him, but can honestly see him being a success for you.

Some fans are pointing to his Shrewsbury failure but in fairness after the season they had he was on a hiding to nothing. Losing players and raised expectation. Will be interesting to see how it develops. He was at the Oldham and Carlisle games so has seen the team at least.

Shrewsbury have actually got worse since he left haven’t they? Seemed a harsh sacking to me at the time and I’m glad he’s been given the opportunity to see what he can do in the football league again.

Shrewsbury was always going to be a tough gig. Overachieved the season before setting fans' expectations high. Several key players to that season either went to Ipswich or were loanees. They're actually in a marginally worse position now than when he left, with the players he signed seemingly their best performers (Askey's recruitment with limited resources is always impressive).

A two-league jump was always going to be hard for him but he needed to be given more time. He's not an energetic, excitable interviewer either, which clearly riled Shrews fans.

Well eventually after days of rumour and drama John Askey appointment is complete. Speaks really well and has a love for the club so hopefully will see us clear.

I'm neither for nor against Askey, as other posters have said he went into an awkward time at Shrewsbury.

Arguably the biggest over achievers since Leicester, lost manager and 2 players to Ipswich and a few of their better loan players went back to parent clubs. Expectations were raised and it's not like they were bottom when he was sacked. You could argue Ricketts is worse but the FA Cup run has glossed over their League form.

My main concern was the quite prominent mentioning of Kewell, if that bulbous weapon had come then i'd have had to think long and hard about going at all.

He's got my support but as ever with Vale it smacks of a lazy appointment, lives 2 miles from the ground and his dad is somewhat of a legend with older supporters like my old man.

He simply can't be worse than Aspin can he? A bloke who could talk a glass eye to sleep.

He talks well and came across very well. The assistant Kevan seems well thought of in the football world so might help.

I’m just pleased we didn’t gamble on Pugh or give Kewell it or the rumoured approach of the Stourbridge boss!

We will see how he does, assume he will bring the likes of Legge and Whitfield out of the cold at least and hopefully players like Worrall will start being arsed again.

Everyone has a clean slate you'd expect. I know Worrall isn't Usain Bolt but he has a great eye for a pass and is a League one player in a crap League 2 team.
His omission has been strange , as were many team selections.

Wasn't performing though, his efforts away at Grimsby were diabolical and was rightly dropped but wonder with some of the form changing if Aspin fell out with a few of them.+

Reasonably happy with the Askey appointment. If he keeps us up he deserves to take us forward next season. I think the appointment of a decent assistant in Kevan will prove the point that we went downhill when Brabin left.
