Not going to be voted in by the Premier league clubs which is probably understandable as its proving problematic and clearly needs work on.

Mind you what odds will we get on a manager saying "if we had VAR x decision would have been corrected"?

Highly likely, Horns. But managers, fans and players are comfortable with being able to blame any failings in their team on the referee. Who needs fair decisions which might expose the shortcomings of your team when you can carry on scapegoating the match officials.?

It's quite disappointing but not at all surprising.

But please help me on this..... Do the Premier League clubs have the final say on this..? What about the FL 72 clubs..? Do the FA not have the final say in the matter..? And if they have, how likely (?) is it that they would go ahead regardless of what the PL 20 clubs say..?

Guess the EFL will have their own vote and the FA have no control over the Premeir league really...

Yeah, between my last post and now, I've looked up the corporate structure of the Premier League and it turns out that: The Football Association Premier League Ltd is operated as a corporation and is owned by the 20 member clubs. Each club is a shareholder, with one vote each on issues such as rule changes and contracts.

It looks like VAR is indeed dead in the water if the Prem clubs vote against it.

I disagree Liam. I believe it could be the saviour of it. I guess it depends on your point of view.

I'm not suggesting that what was trialled was brilliant, but the intention was right.

I want to see a fair game of football, played to the rules. I accept that referees and assistants are fallible. Because of that, they need help and if that can be provided by a system which utilises TV evidence, then surely it is right to use it.

I hope the FA will have learned from the experiment. I hope they will look at what went wrong and find ways to correct the faults. I sincerely hope video review isn't consigned to a shelf to gather dust forever more.

That would be the real death of football.

The game of football may not die, but the sport of football just might if the cancer of cheating, orchestrated dissent, lack of sportsmanship, diving, feigning injury, time wasting and all the other things afflicting the game aren't tackled.

Owners, coaches, managers, players and fans all seem to be perfectly happy with these things..... as long as it's their team doing - and getting away with - the cheating. TV commentators and pundits, and newspapers do little more than pay lip service to it.

It's a nettle the game seems to not want to grasp.

The business will always be there because football is big money, but within the definition of sport, it's in a downward spiral.

I agree, but that's because of money and not much else. Only a closed European league with the financially top 30 teams with wage cap structure will save it. It's a controversial opinion but it's the only reasonable alternative to the same teams competing for the same titles year in, year out. You could prefer the latter, of course, but we still have things like Porto's CL win in 04 in somewhat close memory. Twenty years from now it'll be significantly more boring, should it stay this way. Which it won't.

Somewhat depressingly, you make a good point.

Unfortunately, that plays into the narrative of "Nothing can be done so do nothing."

the var is the future, it will not be possible to go back.

Morally in my opinion it is definitely an instrument that will improve football. However, it must be said that those minutes or seconds of waiting break the fantastic atmosphere that you breathe in the field.

It depends on your point of view.

Your point about atmosphere in the game is a good one and if the game were ever intended as a form of entertainment, then VAR would certainly be a bad thing.

But we have to remember that football is, first and foremost, a sport. Entertaining the fans and winning the game are important, but they don't trump the necessity for the game to be played fairly.

Sport: A contest between two or more individuals or teams of approximately equal skill, played to an agreed set of rules for the purpose of achieving a fair result.

That definition doesn't say anything about entertainment... it doesn't even mention "winning". Those two things are desirable but do not override the core principle of the fair outcome.

VAR is important in this day and age because we've lost sight of this fact. If footballers (and players in other sports) didn't cheat in their desire to win, it wouldn't be necessary. If players didn't attempt to con referees it wouldn't be necessary. If players didn't feign injury, dive, pull jerseys.... the list could go on and on..... VAR wouldn't be needed.

But they do, so it is.

The unfortunate consequence of this is that the fans' "moment"... when a goal is scored, for example, can be ruined by having to wait for a decision as to whether it will stand, is just too bad. The game isn't about the fans (cue howls of outrage).

For me, entertainment is of lesser importance, and is a lower priority, than achieving a fair contest.

Now this is special, even for VAR. Half-time whistle goes in Mainz v Freiburg, players go off, then pen to Mainz given for handball on last action of half. Players called back out, De Blasis scores, players go off again.

I hate the idea of VAR. Part of the fun about football is going down the pub and dscussing the game with mates. Argue that you are right, they are wrong etc. Football is not a black or white game, there are loads of grey areas.

Yeah, the ref/linos make mistakes, but so do players, chairmen, managers, fans etc. If it becomes predictable then it isn't a fun sport to watch anymore.

Cannot wait for the farce at the World Cup, imagine if the winning goal in the final is decided by VAR, would be the most anti climatic celebration to a goal ever.

It will come in, of course it will. Like the Halo in f1 (which is also shit).

They need to make a rule that unless it is really obvious then they won't change it, even if it is wrong. At the moment, they seem to be changing even debatable decisions with defeats the object. If there is a clear dive, or a clear offside then overrule. If we are likely to still be debating the decision after the game then it should not be changed during the same.

I think that is what is meant to happen now but it certainly isn't working that way.

The idea is good but it's been poorly executed so far. It needs to be done more like it is in the rugby with screens in the stadium.

If an offside goal is scored, stick it on the big screen so everybody in the stadium can see and quickly chalk it off. And likewise if a perfectly good goal is disallowed, quickly make the decision right. The game will have already been stopped in both instances so it's not like the game will be slowed down.

I wouldn't use it for penalties except for extreme instances of clear diving where the game has already been stopped and the guilty player can be quickly given a yellow card for diving.

It's all about speed and minimizing confusion in the stadium. I don't see why it can't work.

Is it just me who actually enjoys the referees getting things wrong and creating drama? It's all part of the game and has been since it was created.

Being able to pass back to the keeper was part of the game until 1992.

You've got to move with the times and if we've got the technology to improve the game and make it fairer then we'd be silly to not use it.

And nobody's saying that it should be used for everything, the referee's interpretation in real time will still play a big part of the game.
