There is quite a bit of walking distance between the grounds and their respective nearest tube stations I recall.

Yeah, you definitely wouldn’t want to walk to North Greenwich station from Charlton. Far quicker to just get the train to London Bridge.

No chance this is a derby, but rivalry certainly.

To put it into context Bradford to Rochdale is 17 mile less and takes far less time, with both in different counties. And I'd say there's more rivalry between Yorkshire and Lancs than the fierce Norfolk and Suffolk:bg: . No way would I consider a Bury, Rochdale or Oldham a derby. Do Ipswich fans consider Colchester a derby? Which is much closer.

There's an hour and 10 between the clubs, it's like us calling Preston a Derby game. Rivalry fair enough but not a Derby.

People commenting on the distance might find this instructive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_density

Colchester is much closer to Ipswich than Norwich is, but Ipswich and Norwich have spent a large part of their history in the same division, hence the greater rivalry.

Bradford and Rochdale have other more fierce rivals closer than each other which then give rise to their derbies. Ipswich and Norwich don’t (and Colchester don’t count as they’re tiny - it’s like claiming Salford v Man Utd would be a derby).

In summary, a derby is about more than just proximity of clubs.

A simple search on google of a derby match brings this up:

"Games between two rivals of close geographical proximity are usually called a local derby, or simply just derby (UK: /ˈdɑːrbi/; DAR-bee or US: /ˈdɜːrbi/; DER-bee); a sporting fixture between two teams from the same town, city or region, particularly in association football."

As I say rivalry but not a derby, shall we call Man Utd v Arsenal a derby as they are two of the most fierce rivals in England?

And the highlighted is just nonsense, the sort of thing some Leeds fans peddle against us. Club size doesn't come into a game being a derby, if we play Guiseley or Halifax it is still a derby regardless of club sizes, but they aren't our what I would call rivals. Salford V Man Utd would be a local derby, not sure how that can be contested, like when Man City were in the same league as Stockport.

Yeah ok I’ll go along with that definition, I agree to be corrected. It also backs up the original point that Norwich v Ipswich is a derby as I’ve highlighted/made italic.

See my other post, I'm not questioning the rivalry, but the fact it's a derby.

You’ve got to take into context really though. The amount of large towns/cities up north compared to east anglia is much greater.

If Sheffield play Bradford, is that a Derby?

A Yorkshire derby, yes. Rivalry, no. Imo there's a difference but I've said my part I'll leave it there.

Ok so, Bradford to Sheffield is 45 miles and becomes a Derby. But Ipswich to Norwich of 44 miles is not. Good one.

People from Ipswich sound like fake cockneys to me. Norwich a bit more countrified..

It’s not a Derby to me.

I’m from north Essex and the accent around Ipswich is definitely nothing like a cockney accent. I would say people where I live could quite easily be classified as fake cockneys but that’s probably down to the fact a lot of the older cockneys like my grandparents moved this way when they were young adults.

I really don’t get why everyone’s fussed whether it’s a Derby or not :dk:

Am I right in saying you’re a Bristol city fan? If so, would you call the matches with Cardiff a Severnside Derby match as a lot of others call it?

Read what I put, "Yorkshire derby" if You and Norwich were in the same county then of course it would be. Chesterfield is only a couple of more miles down the road but isn't one for us.

You’ve got to think though, there’s almost as many people in Yorkshire as there is in East Anglia.

West Ham is also as far as Chesterfield is to you but that’s not a London Derby.

It's just silly to say this isn't a derby. It misses that both Norwich and Ipswich are population centres in traditionally very rural communities and are the only professional teams about, both teams go beyond representing the city/town but represent their counties, which in areas with multiples club isn't the same. So to say 44 miles is disingenious as the catchment areas for both run to right next to each other It's also clearly in the same region, with similar histories and a long standing Norfolk/Suffolk rivalry. It's different to an inner city derby, or a derby from towns that are 5 miles from each other sure but it's still a regional affiar and therefore a derby by any sensible definition.

And also, if you've grown up in most parts of Norfolk and Suffolk with shit infrastructure then an hour seems like somewhere that's really close!

Luke Chambers was saying Norwich aren't the team they used to be which might be true but then nor are Ipswich - and for a lot longer!

Couldn’t agree more. Now get back to celebrating a draw with a team worth less than half the value of yours. :fish:
