Two good footballing sides. Both with new managers, both won fairly comfortably the first game of the season and both went to extra time and got knocked out mid week.

I would argue both sides are not at full strength as yet and would be surprised if the starting 11s for both will be the same when we meet at FP later in the season.

We tend to draw at Oxford so I think a 1-1 might be on the cards. Pitman and would have to be ex Pompey loanie Wes Thomas for Oxford.
Pompey have ex Oxford midfielder Danny Rose, whilst Oxford have Ex Pompey goalie Simon Eastwood, Ex Pompey defender Mike Williamson (although he didn't play a single minute due to payment problems). He also played for Wolves with James Henry under Kenny Jackett. Ex Swindon skipper Nathan Thompson may make the bench and will no doubt get an interesting reception!!

Sold out away end as usual for Pompey fans should make a good atmosphere

Don't know on this one, won at Oldham but were awful vs Cheltenham who deserved their win. Supposedly according to the press, Hull have made a bid for Marvin Johnson (laughably reported as £1m) and Leeds are after Curtis Nelson which may disrupt tomorrow.

If we react positively to the Cup defeat then OK but if we play like Tuesday then Pompey, and especially Pitman, will have a field day.

2-2 I reckon. Our defence is still leaky due to 3 injuries across the back, but I think we'll score a few this season as most of our players are goal scorers. My best mate is going today, gutted that I'm stuck at work!

I remember saying when he joined you he'd play in the Prem one day and could see him going to a club like Bournemouth for 5million odd within 18 months.

I'm a few months early and a league lower in my prediction but similar ambitions from Leeds I reckon. What would Oxford sell him for? We've got 20% sell on I believe.

That 300k tribunal decision you yellows were all kicking off about seems an absolute steal now doesn't it? Great player.

Honestly he is so important to the defence now. Beyond even his quality as a player. Williamson might be his equal as a leader, but he's 36 and no one expects him to play 50 games. Without either of those two, we would be at sixes or sevens.

I wouldn't respond to an offer less than £3m because of the impact on our season but I don't think Oxford should be turning down the £5m figure you threw out for anyone other than Ledson.

Whilst Hull have treated us a pub team by bidding £1m for Johnson, the Roofe deal hopefully makes Leeds a bit more realistic.

I expect this to be something of a wake up call for us.. we've got a depleted defence, against what sounds like a very strong Oxford side. 2-1 Oxford

Hopefully I'm just being very pessimistic!

I was joking with my prediction. We have a new manager and made big changes in our approach to recruitment. We have a number of foreign signings with no English league experience or bad injuries to recover from. It's probably a good time to play either side.

Second half performance was awesome, Pompey pressed us very hard in the first half and it made it difficult for us to play but they couldn't keep it up and we thoroughly outplayed them in the second

I'd want £5m plus sell on and add ons minimum. He is a fantastic player but definitely benefits from the quality of Mike Williamson (who is 33 by the way:blush:) beside him.

As for Marvin Johnson and Hull's bid, I liked Darryl Eales response which was "it wasn't worth the paper it was written on". The minimum should be £4.5m plus sell on etc now considering the pisstake bid coupled with them paying £7.5m for Kevin Stewart from Liverpool.

The game today turned on the goal at the start of the 2nd half. Before that it was even with little threat from either team. Afterwards we developed a bit of zip in our attacking play and Jack Payne found more space starting to pull the strings.

Our subs also made an impact unlike Pompey's. Hall added real impetus to our attack, Obika was a handful and Gino van Kessel made a quite an introduction with a superb debut goal. Ricardinho was my man of the match on his debut. The only downer was our new signing Ivo Pekalski being out for probably the season with ruptured ligaments in a training session the other day before playing a game.

As for Pompey, although they conceded 3 goals, for me their motm was Burgess who had a very good game winning most of the aerial battles. Brett Pitman who was kept quiet by our centre-backs rightly had his header disallowed for a push. They passed it around but lacked cutting edge which surprised me with only one legal effort forcing a save from Simon Eastwood.

Also worth noting the Ref and the replacement Ref both had excellent games.

Have to say, I definitely watched the same game as you today. Agree with pretty much all you said. Picked Burgess out as the best in a big Portsmouth team that really only concerned me at set pieces. They started with a very high tempo and worked to close us down at the back and you always felt confident that no one would be able to keep that up for 90 minutes.

First time I've seen Pitman. He gets all sorts of power on a header and looks dangerous with crosses into the box but I didn't see much more. No doubt thats a compliment to our defence.

I think most Oxford supporters wanted to see similar subs to the ones made and agreed they allowed us to kick on. Hall and Gino particularly - what an introduction.

Very enjoyable game from our perspective.
