Henrikh Mkhitaryan is the latest player to receive the dreaded "he's proper shit" motivational technique from Mourinho.

Honestly, he has been shit and needs to sort his performances out but I don't think he is the type of character to respond positively to this kind of approach.

I can see him being up for sale in the summer.

I'm not backing Salts because he's wrong, I'm just saying that you can't pick a stat that suits your agenda and say "lol look he's shit". Especially for goalkeepers.

I looked it up, Nick Pope is top of the league in save percentage but imo nowhere near the best shot stopper in the league. Again, you can't use stats like this regarding goalkeepers in football because they are way too dependent on how the team plays. Burnley are extremely good at funneling shots straight at the goalkeeper by blocking the wide lanes (their cbs+Cork are all in the top 10 for blocks this season), which means most of the shots they concede come straight at the goalkeeper. I'd definitely back Mignolet to top the league in save percentage in that system, as I would almost every other PL goalkeeper. This wouldn't make Mignolet a better goalkeeper.

Most of the shots we concede, however, are premium chances. This is because we pressure very well outside our own box so we pretty much never concede long shots. Instead, when the opposition actually takes a shot, it's usually having beaten most of our defenders. Only Man City concede less shots than we do (Burnley are top). The correlation between conceding many shots and the goalkeeper having a good save percentage is quite strong, but again, funneling shots like Burnley does help, never conceding long shots but often getting beaten by deep balls does not help.

If you twist your thinking the other way around; we concede second least shots in the league. Do you genuinely believe that if we got any of the GK's at the top of the save percentage list, that we would actually start conceding the second least in the league? With Lovren, Moreno, Henderson? Of course not. You just want to pummel Salt's dumb opinion using stats that you don't even know how to use. In regards to save percentage, I'd recommend not at all.

i dunno about all that beelo mate, i tend to think you've taken a running gag a little bit too seriously. but i'll humour you for a bit anyways mate, cos you're a good mate and i've nothing else to do for an hour or so mate. what other stats would you suggest? expected goals against is a good one isn't it, given the theme of your post? ie. "premium chances" that you've made some excellent points about above. we'll have a go at that mate. before this weekends exciting pl action, mignolets expected goals against is 14.89. but somehow you've conceded 17 :dk:. now if we compare that to one of the keepers at the top of the save % list who, as you confidently and ofc rightly say, definitely wouldn't concede less goals if put in mignolets position with all the "premium chances" and that... de geas expected goals against is 12.57 yet he's only conceded paltry 6 :dk:. between 2013 and 2015 de gea made more than 3.5 saves per goal conceded while mignolet made 1.4. the average for gk's that are widely considered good pl keepers (all of which have a high save % coincidentally :dk:) is around 2.5 or above. are you saying a shot on liverpools goal is over 250% more difficult to save than a shot on man utd's goal mate? come on that's a ridiculous statement to be making mate.

p.s as you're well aware (and maybe a bit jealous of?) salty is my very good and loyal friend and i find your attempts to stir up drama between us by suggesting i wish to pummel the bloke distasteful at best. to label his opinion dumb is also poor behavior on your part and i will be speaking to admin about your conduct. abusing other members is never ok, unless it's silky.

Can I just say, mate, that I am in awe of the dignity and magnanimity you carry yourself with mate, particularly after having personal insults thrown at you.

Really, well done mate.

I'm going to take another guess here: you have no idea how expected goals against is measured.

Anyway, you're just trying to move the goalposts here. You asked which stat I recommend you use for goalkeeping and the answer is of course, like anyone who's actually been into it will tell you, the answer is none. All stats for goalkeepers correlate heavily with how the team plays and performs. This goes to some extent for all stats but not to the extent of goalkeepers. Instead, you have to watch them regularly. Which given you have an hour free before Liverpool vs Chelsea I guess you don't.

The stats you pull up prove nothing but the fact that Liverpool are poor at defending and you're just going a long way round trying to say that Mignolet isn't good enough, which I and everyone but Salts agree with.

It's almost like the other team have literally moved the goalposts such is the unease with which Mignolet goes about his work keeping goal.

do you have anything tangible to back up your opinion that Mignolet is a shit goalkeeper? Looking forward to your response.

Yes mate, I used my eyes to watch him and came to the conclusion he is shit.

Ah, alright, so that's your basis of argument? "I've watched him. He's shit." Of course we could all argue like that, and shut down the forum tomorrow.

very interesting beelo mate, very interesting indeed mate. tell me more about these goalposts you spotted wandering around mate.

I'm not calling for stats in that instance, I'm calling for you to elaborate. I think. I mean it's nigh on three years ago, I don't even remember. But I know how you wish I would've called for stats. Which I very may well have, had you been lucky, I didn't know then what I know now about goalkeeping stats. Live and learn etc. Now meet me in the other thread I've got another thing to go over.

What a poor way this is of saying “no Bilo, I don’t know how expected goals against is calculated”. Just ask mate, just ask.

Now go to the Mo Salah thread!

i do beelo mate, there were a great article in the telegraph a good while ago (i think) going in to great detail on how it's measured. it can be rather complicated, but the simplified version is essentially lower goals conceded than expected goals conceded = good. the opposite = bad.

Noel Gallagher is going to be a pundit for the Manc derby on Sunday. Maybe Man Utd could bring in Mick Hucknall to balance it out a bit.

You're definitely older than your letting on chum!
Believe it or not you can go to websites like https://www.youtube.com and watch videos of things that aren't even happening live. You can even rewatch them multiple times. Some say you can even watch videos of things that happened before you were born...

Has Mark Clattenburg got a book coming out?

First claiming that he lost Spurs the title and now basically admitted big name players used to influence him.

http://www.skysports.com/football/n...ce=t.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=Direct

Some fans from smaller teams might say this is a regular theme with most officials!

That's not actually what he was claiming. What he was suggesting was that he let Spurs self-destruct. He declined to send Spurs players off, even though at least three of their players merited it, because he feared he'd face media accusations that he lost them the title. That's a pretty shocking admission when you think about it. In failing to fairly apply the laws of the game he demonstrated a flagrant disregard for its integrity. Spurs players were out of control in that match. What if a Chelsea player had sustained a serious injury? What if Spurs, with their eleven men, had emerged victorious? Worth noting also that Chelsea, along with Spurs, received a large fine for some subsequent argy-bargy. The FA fined Chelsea for "failing to control their players" but now one of their former match officials is on record admitting he failed to protect them! Not a god look at all.
