Southend travel for their second long away trip on the roll, as they travel to Devon to play Plymouth and will be trying to improve on the draw they managed last week at Carlisle.

Plymouth on the other hand, unbeaten at home this season, would love to be able to show that they can compete against a team who should and normally are, playing for the promotion spots or the playoffs. But they will have to man up against another strong, physical team, as they struggled to compete in the midfield area against Stevenage, their last home game.

Southend will travel to Plymouth with many connections to the home side. They have a coach who has named in Plymouth’s all-time team, in the form of Graham Coughlan, as well as players who have played for the opposition.

Southend 22 year old midfielder Ryan Leonard, will be looking to impress in front of his family, as he joined Plymouth as a schoolboy and played professionally for a year before being released, and being snapped up by former Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock at Southend. He always check’s to see when he is travelling back home to see Plymouth when those fixture lists are released. Along with Ryan, former Pilgrim loanees, 22 year old midfielder Conor Clifford and 25 year old midfielder Will Atkinson are both fit and hope to be included in the starting line-up.

Southend manager Phil Brown, has promised to make 1 or 2 changes from his starting line-up at Carlisle, just to try to freshen things up, as they haven’t won in two. Jack Payne, the 19 year old midfielder has been given a promising nod for the game at Home Park, and also pushing for starts are 24 year old midfielder David Worrall and 26 year old midfielder Gary Deegan.

One player for the Shrimpers who will enjoy visiting Devon again is 19 year old loanee Shaquile Coulthirst, on loan from Tottenham, played for local Devon side Torquay on loan at the end of last season.

Plymouth on the other hand are also without a win in two, but without any new loan signings coming of since their game at Bury last week, and no new injury worries, will probably keep an unchanged side. John Sheridan, the Pilgrim manager, also likes a 4-4-2 formation when at home, so doesn’t give many options in changing things around. There could be a couple players looking to grab a start in the likes of 18 year old left back Ben Purrington, along with 19 year old left sided player Nathan Thomas and possibly a new forward partnership of Ruben Reid and Marvin Morgan, but probably, as this is an important game for Plymouth , will keep to tried and trusted,

This is certainly expected to be a tight encounter as the last 7x meetings between these two sides at Home Park as ended in draws. Southend without a win in Plymouth since 1999.

Referee for the game is Wiltshire based Brendon Malone

Kickoff Home Park, Plymouth. 30th August 2014 @ 15:00

Nice preview. Ryan Leonard's dad is my PE teacher, I'm from Plymouth. His dad used to play for Yeovil at left-back in his day, Dave Leonard.

Good preview!

Good win for Plymouth in the end! Southend having 10 men was always going to be an advantage but it can be tough to break teams down!

Hi Saddlerrad, yep good win, made hard work of it though, Southend miles better team than us in the first half, even with 10 men. But dug deep and got result. Was hoping to put up a match report but ran out of time this week, but a preview and match report for Luton v Plymouth next week will be issued.
