Bit of fun. Obviously injuries will dictate but let's see how close we can get to naming England's 23 man squad for the summer (we'll qualify and ultimately disappoint).

2 points per correct player in the squad.
1 point if a chosen player is injured when the squad is chosen (as a failsafe) (unless the player is already injured when chosen before Sept 1st and is out for the entire season)

Deadline September 1st

Well we can count Rooney out of this, he's retired from international duty!

Hmmmmm. Keepers and front 4 look very possible (although Sturridge may be out for someone else)

Welbeck and Chalobah look likely to miss out now. Maybe Winks and possibly Walcott included instead.

Clyne and Rose look like missing out. Maybe Delph/Young in and possibly Smalling.

Some real right decisions and obviously 1-2 will probably be ruled out through injury as ever

What would be your starting eleven, Lee? I think Southgate should go for safe and start anyone who's playing at City and Spurs.

I'd go with Hart - Walker, Smalling, Stones, Rose - Henderson, Dier - Sterling, Alli, Rashford - Kane.

This doesn't look too bad actually.

I’d go Pickford over Hart. No way should Hart be our keeper after his last 2 years. Pickford played at the u21s last summer so had tournament experience.

Wouldn’t go Rose either, he’s barely played this year. Sceptical about Smalling too. Also wouldn’t have Henderson/Dier as a pair. Wilshere or Winks need to go alongside one of them.

The front 4 I don’t disagree with.

The next 3 months will tell all. If anyone hits shot hot form, then I hope we play them. We really missed a trick not playing Vardy in 2016 when he was in the form of his life and Kane was struggling

Haven't seen Pickford play in a while but of what I've seen, he doesn't inspire me with confidence (plus his distribution is awful). Neither does Hart mind you but at least Hart has experience. Southgate would no complaints from me whomever he picks between the posts. Pope looks to be in a confident environment working for Dyche. Why not pick him?

If not Rose then who? Who would you have over Smalling? Cahill? Not a big fan of Wilshere. Once again I think players playing for a club that is underperforming won't be much use. Arsenal are not playing well this season and I wouldn't count on any of their players to get a team motivated if say Panama get cocky and score a goal. I'm not too fussed about who starts alongside Dier. Won't make much of a difference offensively but you could do a lot worse than Henderson.

Bertrand has never let England down. I’d be tempted with Ashley Young though, seems to have matured into a decent left back. A bit like Valencia did when transitioning from the wing.

CB is a weak spot. We don’t really have a top player/leader there. All our options are players I’d prefer to be squad members so no preference really for me.

Strongly against Henderson/Dier playing together. Wilshere is decent if match fit. We need that pivot player alongside the more defensive minded player and Wilshere fits that bill.

Anyone else warming to the idea of Delph as LB? I think he should be on that plane just because he can play in many positions (like Jones but he's tosh).

Pickford

Walker

Cahill

Rose
Bertrand

Dier

Henderson
Lallana
Alli
Welbeck
Sterling
Oxlade Chamberlain
Lingard

Kane
Vardy

Sturridge
Rashford

My initial prediction is looking a bit meh now. Put the ones in blue above that I think will go. I'll reevaluate to:

Butland
Pickford
Hart

Walker
Jones
Cahill
Stones
Bertrand

Maguire
Young
Trippier

Dier
Henderson
Alli
Sterling
Lingard

Delph
Wilshere
Loftus Cheek

Kane
Vardy
Rashford

Welbeck

It wouldn't surprise me if Alexander-Arnold or Sessegnon came through for a surprise call up, especially if any more of the above get injured. I have a feeling Southgate won't gamble though and will go for what he's already seen.

Team wise, if all stay fit, I'm thinking he'll go with:

----------------------Butland
-----------Walker--Stones---Maguire
Trippier------------------------------------Young
------------Henderson--Wilshere--------------
--------Sterling-----Kane------Lingard---------

Although I wouldn't be surprised to see him try Delph or Alli out in CM during the friendlies and if either work, that would well be what he goes with.

Delph? I’d rather we tried to get Milner back out of retirement.
