Couldn't find JCC's Lights Out apart from on the full album at

However, prompted by "Lights Out" from Snap, Crackle and Bop on a lazy Sunday morning, I offer 3 favourites recently played from my diverse vinyl collection.

Plenty more classic and/or obscure options to choose from.

Not a prison song, but a prison album

Interesting thread Alan, good job. I'm sure I'll be revisiting this thread again when the U's are going neither up nor down next year, and I feel like I'm in the L2 prison ;)

Anyway, this thread got me thinking (that's always a good sign) and the first name that cropped up was Nick Cave. His second solo album has Knockin' On Joe on it, and I seem to remember reading in some mag that the title refers to American prisoners that do something to their arms and hands so they will not be able to do any kind of prison work. Self inflicted harm iow.

While I'm a big fan of Cave's earlier work, I'm not a fan of the aforementioned tune. What I sure do like though are two other prison related tunes on his 4th album - the title track Your Funeral My Trail (not sure if this qualifies as a prison song though) but the great cover of Tim Rose's Long Time Man surely does.

Other prison related tunes I can think of right now are John Lee Hooker's Prison Bound and Pete Seeger's I Ain't Scared Of You Jail (though it's more of a spoken word thing than a tune tbh). Others I can think of are all pretty well known - Back on the Chain Gang, Jail Guitar Doors, Jailbreak -so that rules them out :)

I'm thinking right now that there're probably hundreds of prison themed songs by blues/blues related artists?!?

Here's another good one and covered by quite a few, though I can only think of the J.Cash and the Blues Brothers versions right now. If I'm not mistaken the original was the one below by The Robins.

^ NO.

League football is still a long time away and I'm bored. There's the WC but I can't muster up any enthusiasm at all as everybody knows what will undoubtedly happen again. A couple of sleep inducing bore draws, coupled with a narrow 1-0 win or something, and onto the knock stages. Only to be knocked out again. Rinse and repeat every four years. So I say kudos to Alan for starting this thread

Can't imagine why I didn't think of this one earlier, as I'm a fan of good old Tom. That voice ;)

Does this count?

No? Thought so. I only got it 'cos some chap told me big band music is ideal for checking out certain aspects of hifi and turntable set up. First time I heard anything about this as I've always thought that classical/piano music/folk stuff like Joni Mitchell LP's were what people used for evaluation purposes.

That looks quite interesting Vanni
I've never heard of them, and a quick google shows it was Australia's "most successful jazz big band".
What are the tracks on the album?

eightiesrobin I think it's quite good and it rocks, but then again I'm not that familiar with big band music - off the top of my head I think I've only got one other big band lp (Mel Lewis &Thad Jones Live at the Vanguard). I didn't know they were Aussies, that explains why my copy is an Australian pressing on Colombia. It still has the price sticker on the back of the sleeve which says 'Books and Records, Cosmos St.Kilda, $6.99' ;)

Here's the tracklist-

Side A -
1. Kanga (Tie me kangaroo down)
2. Hip Walk
3. Something Better Than This (From ''Sweet Charity'')
4. WD & HG Blues
5. Queen Street

Side B -
1. Kaleidoscope
2. All The Things You Are
3. Kings Step Out

Cheers Vanni.

Big band can be a bit hit and miss IMO, but I do a like a bit as an occasional treat. Thad & Mel are always excellent btw, as is the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland big band.

I'd have definitely picked this up if I'd seen it, nice find.
