We have it worse, having to compete with the likes of Barrow, Workington etc. is very difficult, consider yourselves lucky :P1:

Does my nut in when people say they have it bad due to other clubs in the area!

I mean Derby ffs? Bury have it horrendous compared to everyone and still get better crowds than about 10 teams in this league. God forbid how some of you would cope with City/United, Liverpool, Everton, Wigan, Bolton and Blackburn on the doorstep...
If you get to claim Liverpool/Everton, then we get to claim all those others too! :dis:

To put it into context, Oxford to Swindon is considered a local derby and yet Bury and Liverpool are closer.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
Its hard to judge a club like Burton as they've not yet really had a terrible season in the FL.

what would their gates be if they were utter dog turn crap like say Carlisle are at present, we lose 50-75% support when we're terrible to when we're good and can go from 8,000 averages to 3,000 averages......its always hard to judge club crowds for afew clubs.

alternatively say Burnley I always used to find kept a similar support whether crap or good (until prem years) used to keep about 8-12,000 regardless, never grew, but never shrank.

Oxford - Swindon 30 miles (33.9 miles Kassam - County Ground).
Bury - Manchester 9 miles (Etihad 11.4,Old Trafford 14.3,Ewood Park 18.5)
Bury - Liverpool 38 miles (Anfield 37.3, Goodison 37.7)
Tranmere - Liverpool 3.3 miles (Goodison 6.2, Anfield 6.0)
Tranmere - Manchester 36.9 miles. (Etihad 39.6, Old Trafford 36.2, Ewood Park 45.6).
(All distances taken are shortest routes on google maps).
Oxford and Swindon would appear to be closer than Bury and Liverpool. Also, you're closest Premier League team (Man City), whilst still incredibly close, is almost twice the distance of our 1st and 2nd (Liverpool and Everton). We are also closer to Manchester than you are to Liverpool.
So if you get to claim Liverpool clubs, we're claiming the Manchester ones and we can both agree that we've got a lot of competition

Well except Barnet, they can fuck off.

Funnily enough there is a whole website designed to answer this thread.

http://www.bigclubornot.co.uk/bigclubindex.html

Not sure anyone would actually agree that it actually does that though, even if they do appear to have a way of putting a number on bigness. Not quite sure what Northampton fans might make of the news that Bradford Park Avenue are a bigger club than them although Pompey fans will be delighted to hear that they're bigger than Southampton and Luton fans can also be pleased that they're bigger than Watford. I'm sure the Bury fans knew all along they were a bigger club than Coventry, Norwich and QPR. Here are the clubs in League Two in order of bigness.

1. Portsmouth
2. Bury
3. Luton
4. Plymouth
5. Tranmere
6. Southend
7. Carlisle
8. Northampton
9. Oxford
10. Shrewsbury
11. Wimbledon
12. Mansfield
13. Exeter
14. Hartlepool
15. York
16. Newport
17. Cambridge
18. Accrington Stanley
19. Wycombe
20. Cheltenham
21. Dagenham and Redbridge
22. Morecambe
23. Stevenage
24. Burton

The order of clubs in this division actually doesn't seem too far off what people have been saying on this thread. It's when you look at the whole table and see where the likes of QPR and New Brighton fit into all this that it starts to look odd. It seems to be excessively weighted towards tiny clubs who had spells in the league's early days (most of these clubs were never anywhere near as big as current League Two clubs, even if they did participate in the League in the early part of the twentieth century).

Unless you do a Franchise FC, its not going to change any time soon! Stop complaining about it.

Much as it pains me to disagree with a Shagger, I have to do so on this, UTS!
Apart from a few daft kids in Liverpool scarves in the days when they were top dogs I've never felt them to be a rival draw for Bury people.
As for Everton, I've never even heard of anyone supporting them in our area.
I've encountered more local Leeds and Burnley fans over the years than I have of the two Scouse sides.
I expect Ceetee and Manure fans are fairly thin on the ground in Birkenhead too.

O/T - Will you still be saying Flitcroft out if we go up??

Being close to the 2 big Manc clubs can be a very big advantage, especially with the new training ground, it SHOULD make it easier to recruit young players.
We need to stop playing the victim.

Also, according to the website I linked to, Wigan are a smaller club than Bury ;) they should be complaining about having Bury on their doorstep.

We're a big club were just missing the fanbase... We used to have a good one until the rise of City/United in the 80's

Try being in London. From Plough Lane, Fulham, Chelsea, Brentford, QPR, Millwall and Palace are all under ten miles away and Tottenham, Arsenal, Charlton and West Ham under 15 miles. All are bigger clubs than us, and Chelsea completely dominant in the area

We have the same problem. Very West Ham saturated area obviously, but also Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and United have a foothold round here. Plus with West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium, if they were to put ticket prices down drastically the pool from which we're able to draw our support shrinks even more. I often think we're lucky being a London club in that we can draw players as a result of our location, but it never works that way in terms of fans which is a massive disappointment. For a borough with a population of 150,000+, it's a drastic shame that the interest just isn't there. Kids in particular would rather support bigger clubs on the TV than watching us play week in week out, and there are quite a few reasons as to why that is you'd imagine - especially in a borough like ours.

Maybe Wimbledon should think about moving away from London to gain access to a bigger fanbase?

Could always move to Stevenage? There isn't a big or established league club there

Or Mansfield perhaps? The nearest big club is Chesterfield, so not much competition there
