Nope. But they’re young and likely to improve.

Yates played in the Championship for Rovrum so yeah
Not much, though. He doesn’t seem a natural scorer to me, but fuck, he does work that line well.

Firthy is right. It’s going to be a right good league this season.

Bring it on!

Yates would thrive with someone to play off...hence the need for us to sign another striker. Yates and Woolery won't really work as a front two and I'm sure Wellens knows that so it'll be interesting to see how he lines us up in the first few games until the window closes. Wonder if he might bench Woolery initially and have Jaiyesimi and Isgrove supporting from wide with Doughty and/or May looking to brake through the middle.

Still not 100% on formation but v Scunthorpe I'd go for:

GK - Luke McCormick

RB - Rob Hunt
CB - Mathieu Baudry
CB - Dion Conroy
LB - Zeki Fryers

CDM - Jordan Lyden
CM - Michael Doughty
CM - Adam May

LW - Lloyd Isgrove
ST - Jerry Yates
RW - Kaiyne Woolery

Subs:

Will Henry
Dan Ballard
Tom Broadbent
Tyler Reid
Ellis Iandolo
Diallang Jaiyesimi
Scott Twine
It's probably my ignorance but that team looks very average to me. Doughty stands out as a very good player, but not sure if id take many of the rest.

Couldn't really comment as I've not been to any pre season games this year.

However as I scroll though other teams in this thread nobody really stands out other than Bradford and Mansfield.

We're certainly a top striker or two away from being able to consider finishing in the play offs as it stands though. Not enough goals in us currently. The good news for us is that Wellens is actively looking for players in this position. Made an offer for Marc McNulty before he went to Sunderland and has spoken with Danny Hylton - so that's the sort of calibre of front man we're looking to bring in.

Also just a few observations looking at teams expected to do well:

Plymouth - defence looks unconvincing

Mansfield - rookie manager

Bradford - good looking front line but Vaughan tends to get injured a lot and Donaldson is 35. Might be prolific or might prove an expensive mistake to sign them both. I think Doyle will be their best striker if they keep him.

Northampton - Keith Curle the man to get a team promoted?

Salford - Not strengthened to the degree I expected them too.

Exeter - Always seem to get close but unable to get over the line.

Scunthorpe - Don't seem massively different from the team relegated from League 1. Will probably dick us on Saturday though.

Then there's hopefully ourselves, Colchester, Crewe, Grimsby, FGR, Stevenage, Newport, maybe Port Vale and Walsall, Orient's potential promotion momentum?

I think it's wide open with no obvious stand out and over half the division will be in with a shout of top 7 going into the last few games.

Apologies for my early morning ramblings. Excited to have the footie back.

Well, technically the manager did. And it's looking like a great addition so far, managed 1 pre-season game before getting injured and it probably out of the first couple of games. :ffs:

On paper (I'm fully aware that's not where games are played) we have a much better first eleven than last season and I think that's a pretty decent side.

Out of interest if you think that is a very average team, that must make your side pretty poor in your eyes? Or have you been blinded by the pre-season table where you are putting non-league sides to the sword?

Crewe played some great stuff during the run in last season tbf, were the form team of the division. When I saw them they stuck 4 past us and could have had 6 or 7. And that was when we were going for top 3. Keep that form going and they're real contenders. Continuity should help with that.

Swindon keep signing good players, but you never though whether they'll gel or not plus Wellens is a bit unproven.

I think this is a very open League 2 to be fair. I am probably doing Crewe a disservice, but I can't see them much higher than about half way up the division.

Of course I'm going to end up with ouef on my visage come the end of the season when Crewe win the league and we go down!

The rochdale friendly showed we have the ability to play Vaughan, Donaldson and Doyle from the start which is very exciting but would be harsh to drop Scannell who will terrorise defences this season.
I still feel we're short of a centre midfielder and another winger. If we managed to offload Akpan we could definitely get an upgrade on what we're paying him.

Scannell Palmer Akpan Gibson

Most clubs at this level seem to have a very high amount of turnover in their squads, I saw the other day that our longest serving player signed for us in January 2018.

We have only lost two players from the side that made the playoff final, joe day to Cardiff and dan butler to peterboro and replaced them with 11 new signings, some are very good others time will tell, we start the season with almost a completely new back 5 only mickey Demetriou will start tomorrow out of the 5 who played against Tranmere, so what I think will be our strongest line up to start against Mansfield is

King
Mcnamara
Howkins
Demetriou
Nurse
Labadie
Sheehan
Whitely
Willmott
Matt
Amond

Scot Bennett would get into that starting line up when fit.

Fancying ng your chances tomorrow? From the side that started against you in the play offs we've only really lost Tyler Walker. Unsure what to expect tomorrow, the majority want to see Khan start but I can't see him playing him away at Newport.

Logan in goal, back 3 of Preston, Pearce, Sweeney, CJ and Benning wing backs with Bishop, Mellis and Macca in midfield and Cook and Maynard up top

That Mansfield 11 is really strong. Best in the division, IMO.
