It's been leaked online. I found it a bit tedious to be honest. It's standard Tarantinto but everything is drawn out and sub-par. The characters aren't particularly interesting, the dialogue isn't that witty or enjoyable unless you like constant n-bombs and reminiscing about the confederacy, and when people start to die you don't really care.

So yeah, lots of trailers released last night obviously with the Superbowl. Two that I want to comment on:

Independence Day: Resurgence. Man, this film scares the crap out of me. They got the tone of the first one so spot on and no disaster movie before or since has ever come close. I just can't see them recapturing that magic. But on the other hand... I now have such a morbid curiosity to watch the film if only to see HOW THE FUCK THE BURJ KHALIFA CAN COME CRASHING DOWN FROM ABOVE IN LONDON LIKE A GOD DAMNED MISSILE. They just seem to be going for bigger, bigger and bigger for this one. I hope that's not the only thing it has going for it.

And the other...

The Jungle Book. So I feel like I should hate this. It looks all green screen, it has silly looking talking CGI animals and on the surface it's a pointless remake of a cartoon that I fucking adored as a kid. Like, of all of the movies I watched as a kid, only Aladdin and Robin Hobb may perhaps match it in terms of how many times I watched it. Hell, it was the first movie I ever owned on VHS!
But I can't stop watching the trailers (both the first one and the new one last night) and feel like they've actually seemingly done a fucking ace job on it by the looks of things. It just looks brilliantly cast and seems to have a real affection for the original movie. God damn it. Now I half expect it to turn out decent. I don't want to get my hopes up...

Well god damn it. First reviews for The Jungle Book are coming in and... well, on Rottentomtatoes right now it's got 42 reviews... all 42 of them being positive, so it's sitting on 100%. No doubt a couple rotten reviews will come in at some point, but shit, that's a damned good start that suggests that, actually, the film is actually as good as I thought it may turn out to be.

Wow. A live action remake of a beloved classic animated film that's full of green screen and CGI and stuff... that's actually fucking great? Holy shit. In fact, the general consensus thing on RT says:

"As lovely to behold as it is engrossing to watch, The Jungle Book is the rare remake that actually improves upon its predecessors -- all while setting a new standard for CGI."

Improves upon? GTFO

I'm excited to see it now.

Son Of Saul looks quite harrowing. Been getting great reviews though.

Changed the title to better reflect the year we are in. Independence Day 2, hard to know what to make of it. It might be shit, but then that wouldn't be a bad thing because the first one was garbage as well. Might just be a fun junk summer movie.

Pah, screw that. Independence Day is the one big disaster movie that seemed to get it right. Yes, it's cheesy and loud and "USA! USA! USA!" but it just seemed to do it all in a way that made it great, and nothing before or since in terms of these big loud movies has come close to getting it that right again.

Which is why I don't like what I see of this sequel. It looks like just another big special effects piece of trash of a movie, on par with the likes of Battleship or Transformers or whatever. If it's going to live up to the ID name, it needs to be something special... and it just doesn't feel like it's going to be.

Is this bad? Because I now think this looks like it might be good. Yes I'm a big fan of the games and bear a lot of good will towards this and its success, because validation (also Arthas sequel), but I could at least recognise that the first couple trailers for this were total guff. And yes I know it'll actually be bad (probably), but what I'm curious of is whether the whippersnappers who love all the superheroes and the star wars and the tits & dragons will be interested in seeing this. I'll be sad if it bombs.

Also wouldn't it be nice for Duncan Jones to score a big hit in this year of all years. Not supporting him by going to see this thrice in IMAX3D is basically the same as defecating on his father's grave, imo.
