I might have this totally wrong, but isn't it the businessman behind Salford who is spunking all the cash and not any of the class of 92...they are just there to draw attention on the project surely?

This situation makes me sick. Our owner is only worth 80m, and they are throwing around whatever they want!

He’s worth that much? Show me the evidence pls?

I plucked the figure from thin air, but I know it's a favourite past time of Mansfield fans to play down Radford's wealth. It makes that success all the sweeter!

I was just mocking the self-righteouness of it all.

Struggling to see why Adam Rooney would leave one of the top 3 clubs in Scotland and also in the Europa League (at the time of typing) for non league English football. I doubt money would have been a huge factor as I could imagine he would have been on similar money at Aberdeen to what Salford are currently paying him. From an outside view it looks like when you go on editor mode on Football Manager and just sign anyone and everyone with an unlimited budget. Shit for the rest of the National League as they're effectively playing for a playoff position before a ball has been kicked.

Would be ironic if some non league clogger from someone like Harrogate clattered him and injured him for the rest of the season.

Irony.

I'm bored of moaning about clubs being unsustainable and buying their way to promotions - the issue I have is the media portraying them as some sort of fairytale.

See also, Fleetwood, Bournemouth, FGR, etc, etc...

This.

What utter tripe!
I agree.

On the various points:

There is a clear difference between the vast majority of football clubs founded in the late nineteenth, early twentieth centuries, which were created in towns and cities where there was a huge appetite for watching and playing football, and where the most popular and successful clubs (Everton, Villa, Wolves, etc.) naturally comprised the founding members of the league, and what is happening at Salford.

Even the clubs you mention like Liverpool and Man United met an appetite for football in those cities, which is why they were being watched by massive crowds within a few years of their inception. With clubs like Salford, it is the other way round. The cart is before the horse. An owner is pumping in millions and generating as much PR as possible to scrabble round and find as many supporters as he can, and even then he can't push their gates above 1,500.

We have never been in competition with Bootle as they are in Lancashire, on the other side of the river to us, and I doubt the recent phenomenon of crossing the Mersey to watch somebody else's team existed in the 1890s.

We were called Belmont for a period of twelve months. The original 'Tranmere Rovers' cricket club had nothing to do with the current club. It was not a 'franchise' we acquired. it was a defunct name we adopted because it was rooted in our community (named for a district of Birkenhead) and sounded better then the old one.

By the time we moved to Prenton Park in 1912, our support base had grown naturally over a period of twenty years. There was no money man who suddenly appeared and pumped in a load of cash. To compare our development with what is happening at Salford is ridiculous.

The amount of money being spent by Salford does matter if you care about sustainability and ethical behaviour in football, and you want to preserve the ethos of lower division and non-league football, which until recently has not been run along similar lines to the Premier League. The reason most of us are down here watching football of a poor standard is because we enjoy supporting community clubs and value the community ethos that goes with it. Clubs like Salford threaten that relationship.

You're a hypocrite. The original Tranmere Rovers dissolved due to not having the political & financial clout that Belmont had. They folded, you took the name and moved ground. Stone cold fact. How do you have the cheek? Your roots are bound in capitalist manoeuvres.

Why do people keep mentioning us? We DON'T have a massive budget and we MADE A PROFIT last season.

I mean just look at our squad. Does it look like a big money one to anyone?

The team we got promoted with consisted of several loans and players signed from the Conference South etc. We haven't spent big in years.

Nice try.
No it's not a nice try but indisputable fact. You talk about organically growing support through success, you only achieved a swell of support from success because James McGaul was the "cart before the horse" funding it all.

If you find this inconvenient because it contradicts with your self-righteousness then I can't help you with that I'm afraid. It is a cycle. Birkenhead 100 years ago was booming - by contrast Salford was the pits. 100 years on Salford is in boom and Birkenhead has been enduring a slow death for decades. Salford can now home a FL club - provided if like you did all those years ago, they have a sufficient cart.

Stop being a hypocrite.

Our support comes from across the Wirral, which is considerably more affluent than Salford.

And Salford was not 'the pits' 100 years ago. It was a substantial industrial town that preferred Rugby League to football, which is why it never had a decent football team.

The lack of response to the key denominator is telling. I assume you're not even going to try and dispute the fact you owe everything to the money & power of James McGaul? It would be nice if you could go one step further and provide us with an admittance of your hypocrisy. It's always good to discuss free of ego.

If your only fall back is "Salford haven't got FL history" then where will you land if Salford spend the next 100 years in the FL? Such is the cycle. We no longer have some of the best teams from 100 years ago - who knows perhaps some teams of today will be gone in 100 years and replaced with new ones - further more who knows what the picture will be in another 100 years. The Cycle. Remove yourself from your immediate bubble. Time does not stand still.

Gutter white trash with lowered IQ's from a lifetime of eating an artificial processed diet will make irrelevant comments because they're incapable of processing more than a paragraph at any one time. Your artificially lowered IQ and your dying neural plasticity should stick to twitter as it handles your enthrallment deficiencies better.

McGaul did not bankroll us. He was just a bog-standard club chairman and, as I said earlier, it took us 35 years of steady growth to become a Football League club. Hardly indicative of being massively bankrolled.

We have already been around for 134 years, ta very much. So we will see where Salford City are in a century's time.

Well if we're playing the black is white & white is black game then we are stuck. McGaul was a member of the gentry and practically owned Birkenhead - bog standard my arse :10:

List of teams active in Birkenhead before McGaul took his money bags to Belmont.

Birkenhead FC
Birkenhead Rovers
Birkenhead Argyle
Tranmere Rovers

Contrary to popular belief, the founders of what would eventually become Tranmere Rovers were not necessarily working class. Though the club later became a proud symbol of Birkenhead’s rugged industry, with close links to the town’s shipping and railway communities, the original members of Belmont FC were the sons of clerks, accountants and businessmen.

You are a bloody hypocrite. If McGaul's money & influence wasn't the key factor then why did the team he walked away from - Tranmere "Rovers", die - whilst his replacement team, Belmont (now your beloved Tranmere Rovers) rise to become Birkenhead's best?

Just be objective mun!

Being realistic it'll probably take Salford around 8 years to reach the top flight. I look forward to it.

It's hard to take a statement like that one seriously tbh. Saying Salford will make the PL in 8 years time is simply disregarding all the other league sides that stand in their way.

Second point is I'm sure Salford won't be joining us next year. The reason is that all the other National League sides will play like its their cup final when they come up against them. Just like they always do when some big ex-league side go down and their cocky fans say they'll walk the league.

Yeah, Carl Winchester only signed up because he wants to be a big part of the FGR journey, nothing at all whatsoever to do with money.

So what ? We were the most successful club, so we are the ones still hanging around today. Do you know what financial backing the other clubs received, what the quality of their players was, whether the local public took to them ?

All you have proved is there has been more than one football club in Birkenhead in the last 140 years, which is interesting, but completely irrelevant.
