Come on then, less than a week to go before the season starts, time to get off that fence...

1) Man City
2) Liverpool
3) Man Utd
4) Chelsea
5) Arsenal
6) Spurs
7) West Ham
8) Everton
9) Palace
10) Wolves
11) Bournemouth
12) Leicester
13) Brighton
14) Burnley
15) Fulham
16) Huddersfield
17) Newcastle
18) Southampton
19) Watford
20) Cardiff

As always, never easy.
I think another 16th placed finish is realistic for us, we've kept all our best players including our 3 loanees from last season, and bolstered the squad with some talent that we were lacking last season. As usual we're relying on Wagner getting the most out of what he's got. Should our additions not go to plan then yes we certainly could go down, but we've no reason to doubt Wagner.

At the top I think Liverpool will run City a lot closer this season but overhauling a 25 point gap from last season is a huge ask. I'm calling a disappointing first season for Spurs at the new stadium, zero signings is poor stuff and I'm a believer in standing still is moving backwards.

Mid table was tough to organise. I rate West Ham's actions this summer so fancy them to be best of the rest. Think Leicester will have an underwhelming season with an underwhelming manager and memories of their title winning squad now very thin. Brighton have been tipped by a few for the drop but like us they haven't lost any stars and seem to have strengthened the squad, and look to have a particularly useful defence which made me put them a bit higher. Burnley will surely struggle with a Thursday-Sunday but Dyche is too clever a bloke to get in any serious danger at the bottom.

At the bottom... Newcastle are unpredictable due to boardroom troubles, I've put them just avoiding the drop but if Rafa stays wouldn't be surprised with another top half finish, despite a worrying pre season. I don't rate Southampton's permenant appointment of Hughes despite saving them last season, or their summer business, so I think the discontent that seems to have been amongst the club for a while now will catch up on them. Similar reasons to putting Watford down there too. And Cardiff.... I feel a sense of guilt for doing to them what everyone did to us last summer, but they must be seriously disappointed with their 'strengthening'? And Warnock is hardly renowned for Premier League relegation battles.

Why so pessimistic?

Sounds coming out of the 'camp' are pretty negative right now, we've only signed one first team player and there are still glaring weaknesses in our squad that are looking like remaining unaddressed.

Also, more subjectively - I get the feeling that Mourinho's heart isn't in it, he's making excuses already and I don't think he's up for the fight.

City are still miles ahead, Liverpool have spent big and well, Arsenal finally have a fresh start sans Wenger and I think Chelsea will improve under Sarri. Spurs haven't signed anyone as far as I'm aware and will hopefully lose Alderweireld to us but I can still see us finishing below them after a period of dire results and then Mourinho's departure and the resulting upheaval.

Or, I'm trying the reverse jynx.

Really struggled picking the bottom 3.

Huddersfield have built on what they did well last season, and have kept the manager, they won't be a bad outfit. With my own club I found the 2nd season more of a struggle than the 1st, so perhaps they'll find similar?

At the moment Newcastle seem to have plenty of problems, but then they have Rafa so again they won't be outright bad either. I grudgingly picked them both but really you can flip a coin with any/all of the sides directly above them.

I do fancy Leicester to struggle a bit for some reason, just a hunch.

Cardiff are the only side I have any reasonable confidence predicting to go down, and that's just because Warnock doesn't often work well in this division and usually one of the promoted sides drop, with the other two looking very strong indeed.

As for us, our core side is another year older which is a concern. The impending addition of Lerma as an out and out defensive midfielder is an interesting and out of character move for Howe. Could be exactly what we've been crying out for since promotion and the 'missing piece'. Could completely upset the tactical balance of the squad.

Brooks looks good and is a classic Howe buy, he'll slot seamlessly in. We've done really well clearing out deadwood for good money, and we've seemingly kept Ake and Lewis Cook, which was crucial. Reckon we'll chug along in that pack of teams looking over our shoulders but steady enough.

Tbf though anyone from 11-20 could go down. But something along the lines of this.

As much as it pains me to say it I believe Liverpool are really going to be pushing very hard this season. I don't envisage City having such as good a season as it would be very hard to repeat that. I suspect City will be roughly 10-15 points worse off & Liverpool will be the same amount better off so that will mean things will be very close. I just hope we are in the equation...

Seeing a lot of people with Spurs outside of the top 4, I expect them to maintain their consistency under Pochettino and have another great season, they finished in the CL spots last season despite the doom and gloom Wembley predictions. City to win the league by 10 points or so, the rest of the top 6 to be relatively close together. I think Chelsea will take a while to get going under Sarri, it should take some time for his players to buy into such a radically different system. Pretty confident that will be the top 4, though swap United and Spurs if the former sign Alderweireld.

Surely Steven, too, should be demoted to good friend rather than good and loyal friend?

You don't make the rules here Beelo mate. The bond between myself and Steven is unbreakable, and while his saveloy privileges may have been temporarily revoked, I assure you he will work harder than ever to earn them back. Because he is a top mate and that is what top mates do. Your transparent attempt to move up the top mate rankings at the expense of Steven mate has been noted and I must tell you I am overcome with a feeling of disappointment mate.

Huddersfield have made some good signings so I'd be very surprised to see them struggle.

I am normally shit at those pre-season predictions, especially when it's about a whole table to predict. So I will only predict some inevitable truths here:

- The title will stay in Manchester ( C/U idk and idc)
- Arsenal stay out of CL spots again although Mesut Özil won't have to take the "burden" anymore to play for Germany.:bye:
-Newcastle and Wolves won't be relegated

Remember a while back you said Wolves were your favourite English side Dirk, how do you think we'll do this season? Quite happy with the transfer window so far, think we will be safe from relegation.

I wasn't convinced Wolves were gonna be what many expected of them, but their signings have been excellent so far. They weren't as good in the 2nd half of last season IIRC, but it looks like half of that team will barely be playing this season. I was gonna put you around 12th/13th but struggled to find teams to put above you when I was doing my table.

Remember a while back you said Wolves were your favourite English side Dirk,

They still are, Mark. Molineux is my most visited stadium in England (I've mentioned it here before that my cousin is married to an ex-soldier who was stationed in Germany and now lives in Wolverhampton since the mid-80's. Normally I visited them once a year, at least, and then I watch a match live with her man. Unfortunately, since 2 years I haven't visited Wolverhampton (no, not because of the EU referendum ;) but maybe you know that last year I had a heart attack and although I am recovering very well I am still a bit cautious. So atm I am only watching my HSV live at the Volkspark. But my cousin's man keeps me informed about everything going on at Wolves and he collects the matchday programmes for me and send them to me.

how do you think we'll do this season? Quite happy with the transfer window so far, think we will be safe from relegation.

Rui Patricio is a great signing. What do I expect? Apart from not relegated (which is still the main task) I think Wolves will end between 12th and 17th, hopefully in the upper stages of this range.

Bit off-topic but are you glad that he is no longer involved with the German NT? I would be that's me.
