I posted this in the box yesterday and a couple people suggested that I make a thread. Basically, I've made a spreadsheet ranking teams across Europe's top 5 leagues based on their results AND the teams they've played. For example, a team who's beaten Spurs, Chelsea, and Arsenal will have more points than a team who's beaten Burnley, Newcastle, and West Ham, although they'll both have 9 points in the league tables.

Comment if there's anything I can change.

Why does a team get more points for beating Arsenal?

I might do it. I'll probably need a faster way to input scores and some opinions on which third-tier teams are better. I'd say there's a 60% chance that the top 5 leagues will remain the only ones in the sheet, but I'll probably add the Portugese league and a few 2nd/3rd tier leagues next season.

Make sure you do.

Epic, I applaud your enthusiasm.

btw: For the Bundesliga you have sometimes the whole club name like Bayern Munich (München) or Eintracht Frankfurt but more often only the City's name (like Hamburg, Hannover...). Maybe you can "fix" this to make it look coherent.

Ah yes, and RB Leipzig is not the short form of Red Bull Leipzig but RasenBallsport Leipzig (although the RB is of course a strong hint about the Main Sponsor)

Thanks. Would you mind telling me which names I could shorten?

Either only the City's name or the club name for all teams.
Problem with "only the City's name" is when more clubs come from the same city (like in the PL with the London or Manchester Clubs for example) but actually we have in the Bundesliga only "one club" cities (maybe in the future Hamburg could have 2 again with HSV and St.Pauli or Berlin with Hertha and Union....or Bayern and 1860 ( :fl:)
I think the club's name would be best (you've already done that with the London clubs in the PL etc). Anyway it's only "cosmetics", do as you like. It's your "baby" ;)

Do you intend to alter your points values structure as teams performances fluctuate..?

For instance, we wouldn't have to go back too far to the time when Manchester City were rated as a "fair to middling" team and yet now they're a major force.

As a suggestion, it might be a better idea to link your points values to league position rather than specific clubs. In order to make your algorithm easier the values for each season would be based on the final positions of the previous season

for example:

2016/17 season champions = 100 points
Runners Up = 94 points
Third place = 90 points and so on down the table.

Therefore, any team that beats Chelsea this season would accrue 100 points, but if Chelsea finish in runners up position this season, then next year beating them would be worth 95 points.

I think that would be more flexible, easier to manage and a truer reflection of win value.

If a draw is valued at half points then if Chelsea were to draw with Manchester City next week, Chelsea would be awarded 45 points and City would be awarded 50. This would reflect a "lesser" team not being beaten by a team that finished higher than them last season.

You may also like to consider a bonus award for away wins (half value for an away draw). I'll leave sorting that one out up to you.

This sounds like a very ambitious project but it would be interesting to see the final outcome.

Good luck and best wishes.
