A mouthwatering prospect indeed to kick off the 17/18 season.

Ripley signs and I'll be happier with our team than I was this time last week despite losing Flinty.

Barnsley have stuck to their guns and continued to buy young talent from the lower leagues so it's hard to say how they'll get on; will be interesting to see how players like McGeehan and Pinnock get on at this level.

Ripley
Pisano Wright Magnusson Bryan
Brownhill Smith Pack Paterson
Diedhiou Reid
City 2-1 Barnsley (Reid 42', Pisano 78') (McGeehan 58')

Honestly wouldn't surprise me if we thrash Barnsley, I really do see them heading back down to League One this season, unless they have a remarkable month in the transfer window. I don't like the look of there defense, and I don't see where the goals they need will come from. Then again, our squad doesn't look particularly great either: Ripley (if he signs) and Baker (suspended for this game, might be for the best as he hasn't had a full pre-season due to injuries) will be good additions but another winger and left-back (if Golbourne goes) will be welcome additons too.

3-1 win for us.

We'll smash Barnsley and everyone will be giddy as fuck but then come end of the season and Barnsley are relegated in April... this won't look so smart a result.

Given all the confidence in this thread I'm lumping all I have on a Barnsley win.

I think it will depend on how well Barnsley have jelled, a lot of new players to get useful and this really could go any way, 2-2 I reckon.

We have the worst opening day record of all 92 league teams in the past 10 years, we never win at Ashton Gate and usually ship 3-5 goals for good measure, our inexperienced squad is as thin as a gnat's cock and we conceded 4 in one half to Rotherham (yes Rotherham) last Saturday. We also don't seem to have any goals in us. I can't see past us getting absolutely sodomised.

I'll be delighted if I'm eating my words come 5pm.

I'm guessing you don't see yourself being in this league this time next year.

It depends, I think August and September will be very difficult and if we're into double figures points-wise come October I'll be amazed. If the players begin to gel after that then we might have enough to not be cut adrift and stay up. We've brought in League 1/2/Scottish players all very highly regarded at their clubs like Brad Potts (Blackpool), Cameron McGeehan (Luton but injured currently), Stevie Mallan (St Mirren), but no experience at this level and we don't have the winning momentum of having just been promoted like last year. Plus our team last year had played together for a couple of seasons.

In short, I don't know as it's a brand new side but I will see staying up as a successful season.

No idea what happened to the old Bobby Reid, but I prefer this new one

Last minute goal makes it a better opening day than last season. Silver linings and that.

That first half was incredible. Men against boys. Second half we just dropped the pace but I think we could of upped it whenever we wanted. Dissapointed to concede at the end. While Reid was MOM I thought Pisano and Wright were brilliant.

Called it.

I wouldn't get too carried away Citeh lads, Burton Albion would've had a field day against us today. Glad to at least score but the defending for the 3 conceded, Jesus wept. Hell of a lot of work to do.

That was a boring extension of pre season especially the training match in the second half.
Everyone played well (except Flint to be quite honest) and I love the new boys but very hard to judge against such poor opposition.
Reid mind, some of us have been saying for years how underrated he is. Keep it up chap.

This game, to be fair, was more about how shit Barnsley were comapred to how good we were. It's impossible to judge how good our team actually is by that game, due to how poor Barnsley were. Barnsley's defence was terrible, a simple ball over the top and we were in, had it not been for their keeper the score could've easily been 4-0 or 5-0 by the end of the first half. Second-half was very dull, we took our foot of the gas. Everybody did ok at the very least, Paterson was the main under-peformer though. Reid looked superb and full of confidence, Diedhiou seems to have a knack at getting in good positions, Pack was brilliant, always winning the ball back in midfield, Pisano looked very threatening at times, Hegeler does look like he has a mistake in him but did well today and Bryan still has Brad Potts in his pocket.
