It's been that way most of the season... despite brief moments of elation I think the closed-shop nature of the top five earlier on the season made everyone more worried about throwing it away and less appreciative of where they are. Notwithstanding that Donny fans still think they should be in the Championship, Plymouth fans expect to bottle, Carlisle fans are moaning nancies and Pompey fans are never gonna be happy down here.

Luton fans seem their characteristically cheery selves at least, especially following last night.

League 1 shoddy not championship

Last season we had Northampton who were over the moon at not going bust and destroying the league straight after, there were Oxford fans who were very joyous and quite cocky but with good reason because they were finally a quality team to be feared and then we also had Bristol Rovers going for a 2nd consecutive promotion. Plus Accrington and Wimbledon were not expected to do much either.

This season there arent really any fairy tales happening or anything much to shout about at the top, so we've all adopted Plymouths and hellogregorys shitty dull attitude. :(

I don't know about that... I'm sure some people are hoping Portsmouth get their fairytale promotion to League One.

That's right Shoddy - we're this season's Accrington. The odds have been stacked against us from the start but we're having a right go at it.

We had a glorious chance of promotion in 2012, but we fucked it up late on in the season.

Was that the season with Lee Miller's late goal against Huddersfield and Stevenage making the play-offs?

Yes, but that season was more a chance of just making the play offs where we'd of ended up being swept aside against the likes of Huddersfield and Sheffield United etc. Once Miler got injured it was back to Abbotts usual shitness.

Not necessarily. We did the business against those teams in the league games. We'd have stood a good chance of going up in the playoffs imo.

That season we were in a good position and should have secured playoff spot. But we fucked up when it mattered towards the end. Wycombe (A) and Scunthorpe (H) over the Easter weekend spring to mind.

Yes all because of Miller and Chantler getting injured so Matty Robson was pushed back down to left back, but c'mon fucking Stevenage beat us to a play off place in L1, Stevenage!

I always felt that we were the best of the rest in L1 after the big money clubs for those couple of years when Abbott was actually quite decent.

If only he was!

That was the big mistake by Abbott. Big game against Sheff Wed, Chantler out, Michail Antonio on the right for them, any sane person would put a pacey left back up against Antonio. But nope not Gregory, he plays Peter Murphy there. He gets torn a new arsehole, game is lost.

Miller was a big blow yeah. But as he didn't have a ready made backup, any sane person would change the formation to accommodate our other strikers like Madden. Nope not Gregory... sticks with it thinking Curran, Madden or anyone else could do the Lee Miller role... promotion over. Maybe we would have got the best out of Paddy Madden in those games had that gormless fucknugget of a manager put him in a front 2 with say Zoko for example.

Abbott was never decent. He had the biggest budget the club has ever had and he completely wasted it. He was tactically inept with a group of players and budget capable of getting promotion. He then proceeded to completely release and dismantle all traces of talent in that squad which turned us into relegation material.

I agree with you both. I think we were nailed on for a playoff spot until we fucked it up, and would have been the form team in the playoffs too. I remember checking out the forums of the teams chasing the final automatic place, and they were all worried that they'd finish third, get us in the play-offs and we'd beat them.

Still though, like Carver, looking back at it, it doesn't feel like a real shot at promotion. Sixth place in league one, we certainly looked a decent shout but we had too much still to do to be able to taste the Championship in the way we did under John Ward.

Greg Abbott was a massive fuckwit and he was lucky on so many occasions not to get sacked as he'd always manage to get a result whenever he was on the brink, but the 3 stooges kept him on and the worst was giving him another contract after that awful season we had before the even worse one where he finally got the boot.

I know he had passion, but it's never going to be enough if you are tactically inept.

Which game was it where he stormed out of the press conference? Was that before or after his new contract? Most of his passion seemed to channeled into sulks.

Although he signed some good individual players he was rubbish at actually building a squad, I don't think we ever had a spine during his time with us, and there always seemed to be someone out of position. Then of course there were the times he plucked talented players like Nahki Wells and Paddy Madden from obscurity only to not use them, release them and see them go on to greater things elsewhere. It's not a lie to say that most of the crowd could see Wells had something about him, just Abbott didn't,

That said, I'd take him over Kavanagh all day long.

Which other managers at people's clubs could be accurately described as fuckwits?
For my lot, I'd certainly have applied that description to Lawrie Sanchez.

Alan Smith who took over a brilliant team that Martin O'Neil put together and destroyed it within weeks :mad: Lawrie Sanchez was our manager when we got to The FA Cup semi final in 20001 so he wasn't all bad,he was a bit odd though and some of his decisions were laughable.

Wycombe was the only club post where Sanchez did anything like a decent job. By the time he got to us he was completely puffed up with his own arrogance and sense of self-importance and thought that he could manage successfully with a minimum of effort.

You beasted the league that year though. Under Abbott we never played particularly attractive football, even though he liked to sign slightly built tricksy players who looked good on the ball, his tactical philosophy was that of a 1970's mid-table Serie A manager. Cattenacio!

Was against us you won the title wasn't it? We seem to have been in attendance for a number of title wins (our last game in League One was Wolves' title) as well as relegations. We were truly the Mansfield of League One.

Do you lot still hate Tony Cottee as much as you used to. I remember going to see Barnet play with a Barnet fan who was irritated that they had Cottee in the studio and were presenting him as some sort of Barnet legend.

Not quite, we won promotion at your place, a 1-0 win with Bradley Wright-Phillips scoring, third time we've been promoted at Carlisle. I'm hoping you come up this season as hopefully it means we'll have a chance next season!

To be fair, going back to that season I remember you being pretty decent. If I remember rightly, we were the last two out the hat for the 2nd round of the FA cup and I was thinking 'I hope we come out first as I can see us getting done up there'. Also, wasn't confident of getting the win at your place to seal promotion, thought we would have to wait another week.

Definitely.
The guy is a Barnet bell-end rather than a Barnet legend.

I remember when we played at West Ham in the FA Cup in 1996 we somehow hung on for a 1-1 draw despite being pummelled for the entire second half, they hit our post, shots cleared off our line, some amazing saves etc and Tony Cottee came out after the game and said words to the effect of (as I can't remember the exact words) "I've seen nothing to make us worry about going to Grimsby and getting a result and I expect us to go there in the replay and win comfortably". LOL

I always remember Tony Cottee saying on Sky that Dean Ashton was the twice the player Carlos Tevez would ever be.

I switched off and have never listened to a word he's said again.

In terms of size he was correct!

The team he built at the start of the 10/11 season was fairly solid but Abbott would not long after persist in playing guys like Murphy and Robson at left back where they would struggle and he would always talk us down as a little club who can't compete with the top 6 teams which was all bollocks, it was just him making excuses to cover for his poor professionalism and clueless tactics. He did not get much respect and passion out of his players either.

I can't believe that Hull City were once interested in taking him off us after the season we nearly made the play offs.

As for Charlton, I'm sure we did the double over them in 09/10 in style! 3-1 win home and away with Kavanagh scoring two crackers at home.

I think most fans can provide a long list of their teams managerial fuckwits. Here's mine in chronological order:

John Gregory
Terry Fenwick
Graham Rix
Alain Perrin
Tony Adams
Richie Barker
