Gateshead have announced Steve Watson has signed a new 1 year deal to remain manager there so that rules him out of the Macc job.

Joaquin Gomez apparently to be announced as our new boss on Monday. Luton fans, what’s he like?

He's Spanish? Not really sure what you expect me to say... he's the First Team coach. I suppose he's someone to take on if you want to play attractive football.
Best career move?

Sounds like a cheap option. Bit risky.

Seems a funny one but I'm all for giving a young ambitious coach a chance. If Luton's goal tally is anything to go off last season then it looks like he was part of an attractive style of play.

I'd imagine he'd probably be taking a pay cut to come here! Also good that he already has experience of coaching in, and winning promotion, from this league.

Luton were by far the best footballing team in the division, according to Nathan Jones.

Bit harder to play like Barcelona if you haven't got any money though.

I don't think so - will be one of Macclesfield's highest earners. We took him from the same role at Derby.

As of best footballing team, is there any argument about that? Most goals by a mile - the next team had 15 goals less in the league. We hit 4+ goals in a game 8 times last year.

Tbf you were the best footballing team I saw, knocked it about well and your front 3 especially were excellent. Jones does like to tell everyone that quite a lot though.

Not easy to replicate that style without the same quality of players though.

You can only really comment on what he is like by comparison to Jones, as you would assume he shares the same tactical view points etc as him. Other than that its difficult to say what his overall input is.

So if we assume that to be the case get ready to be playing almost without exception a 442 diamond and trying to pass the ball and in general play some really attractive football. The midfield 2 are absolutely key so I hope you have some decent box to box midfielders, and the full backs again massively important as they are really the only ones providing any width. You will also be playing out from the back a lot so I hope you have a keeper decent with the ball at his feet! In that way it should be an exciting appointment.

Do think it is a little bit of a left field appointment. To play the way we did took us quite a bit of time to get right, NJs first full season it was not uncommon for him to shoe horn wingers into the diamond just so we could play that way and often times it didnt work, so again if he is like NJ he can be very dogmatic in wanting to play "his" style.

Over and above that point and perhaps more pertinent to Macclesfield situation, it took a decent amount of investment to get the right players to play that way as you need a certain type of player, good technically on the ball etc. that tend to be thin on the ground at this level.

I think its a good appointment as he's no doubt an up and coming coach.

Funnily enough we were the best footballing side in the conference too, so already a base of decent technical footballers at the club.

And Nathan Blissett.

Interesting then perhaps why he was attracted to the job in the first place then.

Without wishing to patronise as not too long ago we were in the very same position being lectured on things and the “step up” but playing that way in the conference is something of a different beast.

The calibre of player required to play that way is significantly higher in the league I’d suggest. It took us buying Luke Berry to resolve our box to box midfielder issues in that system for instance.

Although if the groundwork is there it may be an easy transition

Completely agree, but at least he has something of a start, if indeed it is Gomez that comes in. I would hazard a guess that most of our players would have attracted league interest this summer so whilst I'm not expecting to rampage straight through the division, at least they'll all be used to a possession style game - but of course in a much tougher standard of opposition.

Will be interesting if it happens, and pretty exciting for the club and Gomez himself if this is his break into being the "gaffer". Surely we'll be able to be successful and play better football than Morecambe & Forest Green?

Try and play like us with your mob and you'll be conceding triple figures every week. You need extreme levels of skill to play like us and not lose every week in this league.

I can’t agree that Luton were the best footballing side last year as honest Russ said in interviews that apart from the 2 goals they scored we would’ve got a draw away.
And at Blundell Park they only scored one goal ffs.......
And had another couple of other great chances.......
With only 10 men.........
For over a fucking hour.........

Luton beat us with sheer brilliance, as witnessed by this STUNNING goal at our place. Not much our defence could do to stop this tbh.

And now Mark Yates moves into the pole position for the job.

Bookies have never seen such movement on such a shit job before.

Gomez turned us down, Yates is at least 4th choice? Budget of a fiver and two buttons clearly not appealing to prospective managers.

Yates expected to be announced as manager today, with Neil Howarth (Macc legend) as his assistant.

He did an outrageously good job keeping Solihull up last season in the conference, got my vote for manager of the season, but how did get on last time he was up here with Chelts, Crawley etc?

Seems a decent enough one.

Crawley was a nightmare but Cheltenham he did ok bar losing the plot towards the end IIRC.

Si Robin and Casey will be able to tell you more.

Mark Yates at Solihull would be my first choice at the moment. He has FL experience and knows how to keep teams up against the odds.
Happy with that. Although if I'd been in charge of the appointment it wouldn't have taken such a bloody long time.

Sounds like we may have had to wait a bit whilst sorting compo with Solihull.

Happy enough with that, look forward to who he brings in as his team and new players now.

Yatesy is a bit of a Cheltenham legend having been part of our rise from Conference to Division 2 (now League 1). He didn't hurt his stock with us at all as manager.

He forged a fantastic squad in 11/12 and we really should have gone up automatically, but Yates has a bit of a habit of bottling the big games. In both of our playoff seasons under him he made strange decisions at important times, bringing Jeff Goulding into the starting 11 in the Playoff final against Crewe for example.

He doesn't take criticism well (who does?) and when things do look to go against him then he struggles to turn it around. This happened in 13/14 and the club kept him on longer than they should have. His sacking was inevitable the moment Neil Howarth was let go - some managers need a number 2 they can take to every club with them and Howarth is that with Yates.

There were strong rumours of him sleeping with Billy Jones' missus, which apparently caused a lot of friction in the dressing room - I couldn't possibly comment on the validity of these allegations.

Ultimately, Yates is good on a budget, he's got a cracking eye for a player and likes to play decent football. If things go well for him, then he'll be brilliant for Macc. The moment they get a bit choppy though, pull the trigger before they get beyond saving.
