It's finally here, the start of a new league season in the Championship, and we start with a trip to newly promoted Wigan. It's not been an ideal summer for us, zero players incoming has meant we haven't addressed the glaring issues we've had within the squad for the previous 2 seasons, making it highly unlikely we'll be anything better than mid table plodders, hardly a surprise though with how close to FFP we are running at the moment. Jack Hunt and Jordan Rhodes have been moved on so currently we are probably weaker than we were last season, very much going to be a transitional season for us with plenty of youngsters being integrated into the team. On paper this is a winnable start against newly promoted opposition who haven't had the greatest summer themselves, expecting a tough game though and would be pleased with a solid away point to get us off the mark.

We were outstanding today, totally outclassed Sheff Wed, excited about how this side can progress this season now, it's ridiculously young and is packed with pace and power all over the pitch, Sheff Wed just couldn't handle us when we attacked. Could and should have been 5/6-1 up a combination of the cross bar and a superb goalkeeping performance kept them in it.

Was a bit panicky at the end when Sheff Wed pulled one back, then went gung ho with 4 strikers, end to end drama. We will certainly have to be more clinical with the chances we missed, they created 3 chances in 70 minutes and scored 2, we created 14 and scored 3.

Three young defenders all making their debut today, 2 only signed late yesterday, 18 year old, 20 year old and 21 year old, so to produce the performance they did was very pleasing, a few jittery moments especially for the scrappy first goal, but should get strong as the season progresses.

Nihiu is a disgrace with that stamp and he almost connected with Kipres head, pathetic that he only got a second yellow for it, but I think the ref missed the stamp and booked him for the elbow. Hopefully the FA come down hard, no need for that in football.

Sheff Wed keeper looks excellent but that number 4 was just a walking disaster.

We'll surprise a few teams this season, with high pressing, high intensity style, the pace that we have will be a huge weapon.

Wasn't expecting a game quite as high scoring as that, we gave away some sloppy goals today with the second one having a slice of luck for Wigan with the rebound falling perfectly for Jacobs, we at least created a few chances which is promising but scoring 2 goals away from home and not getting anything is concerning. Serious concerns with that back 3 at the moment, Van Aken and Pudil were all over the place today, Lees was the best of the bunch but what was most baffling was how Hutchinson was used. I've seen him play a lot of positions for Wednesday including in goal, but as the most advanced midfielder in a no 10 role? Wtf was that all about. No coincidence as soon as he was put into the back 3, and Joao came on we looked a lot better, had Reach taken the shot on himself in injury time instead of passing to offside Fletcher we could have come away with a very good point. A lot of work to be done but still 45 games to go to achieve a solid mid table finish.

Thought Wigan were fairly decent and deserved the win, the centre back they've just signed from Motherwell was very good, we've probably played them at the worst possible time with them still riding the wave of a title winning season. It'll probably be a long tough season for them but they've started well.

Don't know if Wigan will be a good side or (more likely) if we're going to be a very poor side, but as Northernsoul says Wigan totally dominated and should have scored a few more (no 11, sorry i don't know who is he and that's not being disrespectfully, looked dangerous but had no end product) while we scored from our only 2 shots (injury time one was offside).
We did look much better with Joao on, so that's a positive for us to take out of it, but the defence was all over the place, I've still yet to see anything from Van Aken to convince me he can defend. (He can look accomplished on the ball, but he needs to defend 1st and foremost)
If we had have got a late equaliser it really would have been daylight robbery.
Football aside top day out around Manchester though.

Wednesday might be worth a tenner to get relegated.
