The Government have given their backing to a bid for the 2030 World Cup.

Might be a move to bring some positive PR news for them at a time of real crisis..

Do we have a chance given what happened for the 2018 bid and post Brexit relations with the rest of Europe?

Be good to see but can see it going to South American as part of the century of the World Cup.

Our stadia are just a bit shit when you look at Russia, N America, Japan/Korea. Also doesn't help the best ones are concentrated in just a couple of cities.

I'd go

Millennium
Windsor
Hampden
St James'
Elland Road
Anfield
Old Trafford
Hillsborough
City ground
Villa Park
Ashton Park
MK
Wembley
Tottenham

So great Britain then not england. The issue is 4 spots would be taken straight away, 3 of which never qualify. I do like the idea though and think it would be a lot better if there was matches in all of Britain. Not sure how Windsor park will work as all stadiums I believe after the next world cup need to hold 44k I think. If england made a bid I believe the millennium stadium would be part of it anyway, was it last time does anyone remember?.

They're all certs I'm sure we would see some revamps, new stadia being built for the rest.

An England bid ain't gonna fly and why should it. Wales will qualify now it's expanded, as should N Iron so that leaves us with just Scotland to fulfil the Canada role.

You can't have London being hosts x four - I'd even say three would be pushing it. Also not sure Manchester could cater for two either - that's over 130,000 direct spectators let alone stragglers without tickets.

Both cities are more than capable of catering that amount of games. Providing Chelsea have a new ground by then, arsenal might miss out. Villa park will be a cert too, forgot that one. Just checked you weren't part of the last bid, but I'm certain you will this time , I hope all 4 are.

Manchester isn't capable unless it's residents become airbnb moguls. It can host United & Citeh over a weekend because everyone goes back to their own homes. Greater Manchester can't even get it's people to work on time or in some cases at all - no fucking way could it hack at least 500,000 people over the course of a tournament.

Out of the 75000 that would be at a match at old Trafford, 30,000 would probably be from Manchester/ surrounding areas. There wouldn't be 2 matches there on the same day and with england being so small people will set themselves a base and just train/ bus it in and out.

My dream home world cup would probably include the whole of the UK & Ireland - with a couple of the high capacity rugby or Gaelic football grounds involved too.

Wembley, London (90,000) - Opening game, semi final, final
Twickenham Stadium, Twickenham (82,000)
Old Trafford, Manchester (74,994)
Millennium Stadium, Cardiff (74,500) - semi final, 3rd place game
Croke Park, Dublin (69,500 seated)
Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh (67,144)
Celtic Park, Glasgow (60,411)
Emirates Stadium, London (59,867)
Anfield, Liverpool (54,074)
St. James' Park, Newcastle (52,354)
Aviva Stadium, Dublin (51,700)

That's 11 grounds that spring to mind with +50K capacity alone with no need to expand. Obviously an expanded Windsor Park would have to be involved to place a venue in each of the 5 nations.

I've even thought of a solution to the qualifying issue of 5 'hosts'... a home nation tournament which would decide the one (or two) automatic host spots with the sides that don't qualify as hosts going in to the standard qualifying procedures.

I am very aware this will never happen for a magnitude of reasons.

Manchester would be fine, it hosts massive events every other weekend of the year. We went a few years back to a gig at Heaton Park on a friday night, over 50k there. Then Parklife kicked off the morning after for the weekend. That's 200k people in three days it dealt with, they're used to big venue events. Good rail links, big airport, public transport system already in place.. of course money would be spent improving it but it's more than capable IMO.

Of course it would be carnage, even more so than it already is but the infrastructure is pretty much there for Manchester to roll straight into a WC.

It isn't - if it was I wouldn't be saying it isn't. Parklife ain't comparable - more or less all locals using their own accommodation & transport, plus it ain't really Manchester and it's in a fuck off massive park.

Greater Manchester can't get it's commuters to work on time - it isn't London - it might look good on a weekend but it's fucked during the week.

Are you now head transport and accommodation officer for Greater Manchester now then?
Parklife is pretty comparable to a one game a day scenario. So is any other gig there. The MEN, Old trafford, the cricket ground..
It's about a mile further out the centre than OT is so does it really matter it's not Manchester?

We don't need to get commuters on time, just 75k or 55k fans to a match once every 4 days.
It currently handles events at the above venues on the same day, to me it doesn't look beyond the realms of reality to use Manchester once again as a host city with a few improvements to certain services.

Can’t imagine it being England only as our stingy government will be desperate to share the costs even though England could easily go it alone with the amount of big stadia we’ll have by then. So I’d think it’ll be a British bid with The Millenium, Hampden, The Aviva and possibly the Old Firm grounds mixed in with the obvious English grounds. If countries from any continents other than Europe are allowed to bid then I’m pretty sure we’ll be facing big opposition from China.

Leave the Aviva out of it, don't need to be mixing with that lot. United kingdom of great Britain and northern Ireland, they won't be involved and rightly fucking so.

It's the most capable city of hosting anything, it's the 2nd city these days.

Two people who don't live or work in the city telling someone who does what it could or couldn't cope with :surr:

Unless the Etihad is only used for a handful of games and days apart from Old Trafford it isn't happening. It cannot cater for 130,000 people descending on it - that's over 25% of it's population! It isn't London - second city or not Manchester is a small place.

It literally catered for 130,000 people when they had Soccer Aid and Parklife on the same day this year. Taylor Swift and Tyson Fury on the day before.. That's well over 25% of it's population in what, 48 hours?

The city might fall to pieces, who knows. It didn't in 96 (infact they chose it to be the most represented city bar London) and it doesn't every weekend they have major sporting and entertainment events simultaneously.

I hope so. Europe had now its World Cup so South America should get the next available (after this Qatar thing and US/Mexico/Canada Triple host). I would like a joint Uruguay/Argentina bid to commemorate the Centennial (and the first final between those two).

Give England the 2066 World Cup to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its only World Cup :D

It's truly amazing what people will believe.

I would oppose the bid regardless of who is involved, the World Cup should be looking to go into nations where domestic football can be grown.

The UK is already at saturation point, it would have no effect. Put it somewhere like China or India instead.

Considering most of your country despise us, it's not a wise idea.
Yeah, I don't think the historical context is that significant when it comes to a shared World Cup effort. If anything it would be more contentious if you included Northern Ireland in a World Cup bid and not the Republic considering we have no infrastructure up here to host a World Cup game, whilst the Republic has both the Aviva and Croke Park. A mainland Great Britain World Cup makes more sense.

I just found it amusing that you don't want to mix with our lot, when that is the specific reason half of Ireland hates England. The empire mixing in where they weren't invited.

There is no agreement on the total number of Irish soldiers who served in the British Army and Navy in the First World War. Professor Keith Jeffery gives a figure of 210,000. There appears to be a consensus that at least 35,000 died though the figure on the National War Memorial is 49,400.

An estimated 60,000 men from what was then the Irish Free State – now the Republic of Ireland – served in the British Army, Royal Navy or RAF between 1939 and 1945.

I'd be more than happy to host it with Ireland, providing they paid their way of course.

A home nations tournament would be a great laugh (imagine some poor sods having to try and understand English, Welsh, Irish & Scottish accents in the space of a few weeks )

If we did do all of this, as long as other nations pay their way then let's do it - it only strengthens the chances. Otherwise, when else would Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland & Ireland ever really have a chance to host?

It was a direct response to his needless comment, otherwise I wouldn't have brought it up. This post is far more antagonistic than mine, I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy of such a notion.

And it is quite blatant that he's a strong unionist based on his previous posts. I don't know what parts of Ireland he's been to, but we are more than welcoming to English people unless you flaunt British nationalism in our face. There is nothing the Republic has done in football terms that should evoke the remarks above. Clearly a man with an agenda.

Ah my apologies, didn't see that post.

Bringing it back to topic though (before it goes way off) - it would be excellent to host it all together

The republican contingent of Northern Ireland dislike the British significantly more than the vast majority of the Republic of Ireland. You are far more likely to receive a bitter reception in the north, fwiw. Even in Belfast.

----------

But yeah, back on topic. I would love a joint tournament and so would the vast majority of Irish people. Nationalism would not factor into it whatsoever.
