Would you like playing budgets be in the public domain?

We're on the eve of a new season, and pre-season speculation always consists of countless comments about who's supposedly spending what, and which managers are doing well with what they have whilst other clubs are underachieving, and this morning I've read an article from our manager Derek Adams that I think raises some interesting points, or would it just kill the fun?

The strength of some sides will be down to financial muscle, with at least one of last season’s Championship sides rumoured to have a bigger playing budget for this campaign than they did last. Derek would be pleased if those types of rumour were substantiated.

“At the start of any season, we should have it out in the open what managers have to spend, cheque-book wise,” he said.

“I’m quite happy to have that, as a manager, because I know the constraints I work under and I know the benefits some other managers get.

“That would then show the good coaches, the good managers, from the rest, just to give an idea to the football fan how their club is spending the money.”

In a week when one footballer agreed a contract that will see him earn more in a week than Argyle pay their entire first-team squad in a year, Derek is not about to risk the Pilgrims’ prudence since they nearly spent their way into oblivion in 2011.

“Financially, the chairman and the board of directors have put the club in a very healthy position, being able to break even and move into profit,” he said.

“That is not easy in this game because, if you look at the clubs with benefactors who are spending money they don’t have, it becomes a challenging operation for any club chairman.

“The game has gone ludicrously mad at the top end and it filters its way down to the bottom end eventually. I do think there should be a bit more clarity in the public domain.”

Would be interesting but dont think its essential. Our chairman confirmed this week that Bolton had two players that earned more than our whole squad did in a week.

According to our CEO during the annual fans questioning, our is firmly 'mid-table'.

Heard figures of £3m-£3.5m, but understand there is a real difference in opinion between fans on here as to where that would put us. I imagine an increase in both season ticket sales and prices will have added some money to form the budget this season.

It would be nice to have some full disclosure however for all our clubs. Trouble with that is that agents would be all over it and demanding bigger wages for their players.

Agree with your last sentence. It would make transfer negotiations a nightmare and potentially greater losses for a lot of clubs.

Our League 1 wages were usually around £3m a year in League 1, but that was before the Championship so god knows what they are now.
As for an actual transfer budget I'd expect us to have one of the biggest in the league, as we've got one of the biggest budgets in our history for this season, we've lost high earners and we've sold Carruthers and Baldock both for 6 figure fees to Sheffield United.

I think transfer fees and background finances in football should be a lot more transparent.

Absolutely not.

For starters, why should they? Why are we so determined to tell people how to spend their money? Won't this paint a target on the backs of those who pay and ultimately make them pay more? How will disclosing what you pay actually improve anything? Don't supporters want their clubs to splash out on improved signings?

All that article really says is that a manager thinks he's the business because he's outperformed his budget.

If you don't like the money in football then stop paying £70 a month to watch it on TV, stop paying £50 for a shirt and stop acting like it's the most important thing in the world.

As interesting as it would be to see all clubs playing budgets for a season, I'm going to agree with you on this. It would make signing players on frees alot harder for smaller clubs who may need to negotiate with alot more thought and consideration.

Generally all clubs budgets are made public eventually. There's no point in publically stating a budget before the season starts though as there are too many variables.

According to Flitcroft ours is bottom 4, so those who say we are paying a fortune are clearly, er right.

I think it would lead to even more managerial casualties. We can all speculate what our teams are spending but none of us really know the true figure. And if it comes out that a certain manager has spent this much, or a certain player cost this much, fans will get on the said players/managers back if underperforming.

Exactly this, we had a dismal season last year and one point of frustration for the fans was the wage of certain players who never looked interested. To have the official figures given would surely make this an issue for a greater number of teams in/around midtable if the fans perceive the manager/team to be underachieving.

It's one of those things that sounds amazing in principle, but would it really do any good for the quality of the game or with regards to the accountability of overspending?

No but it'd increase the number of pseudo-economist football supoorters on the internet and that can only be a bad thing.
