Joining League Two for 24/25

Along with Lewes & Histon, I remember a few other very small clubs that got up to the Conference/National League down the years we were there. Leigh RMI, Droylsden, Farsley Celtic & North Ferriby spring to mind. Clubs that even made us look big (ish). Can't imagine any of them ever making the EFL, although Leigh did finish near the top once I think.

Didn't do any of those clubs much good being up there, they've all either dropped down a few leagues or gone bust/reformed.

I still think of the time (a weekday evening game of course) Leigh RMI took precisely one away supporter to Dagenham.

It's sad what happened with Northwich V. Lost their ground and basically split into two. Always worth remembering a very long time ago that they were briefly a Football League team.

Are Altrincham still part time btw? They always used to make a big deal about that, and frown on any clubs that went full time in the Conference (which we first did in 05).

If they are fair play to them for finishing that high up.

Anyone remember Fisher Athletic being in the National League - were definitely there in the late 1980's. Also Frickley Athletic who were there in the early and mid 80's

Jeez I don't want to say "spend some time down there and see for yourself", as I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but... well...

... look at it like this: Have you ever seen 'Requiem For A Dream'? Take the sense of hopeless despair from the end of that, perhaps mixed in with the despondent tone of 'I, Daniel Blake' and imagine it as a matchday experience. That's what it's like playing against the likes of Bromley Wood.

I remember when we first went out of the EFL and all the Slops & Jester fans were taking the customary piss out of us. One post said that we'd realise we were in non-league when:
1. You see the standard of refereeing, and...
2. You see the amount of (or lack of...) away fans you get.

Though they were right on the first part (to a degree - it's not exactly 'elite' in L2 tbf...)
They most definitely were spot-on with the second. We'd be sat in the (now) Macron Stand actually counting the number of away fans in some games, that were huddled together in the top part of the Wxm Lager Stand..

Then we played Histon!
Not a soul. Not a sausage. Nowt. Empty...

We'd plunged to our Nadir!

Once you get relegated a second time you get used to losing to no mark sides but it is the lack of atmosphere and away numbers and that still depresses me. It is just so bleak.

Around 5 pints before the game numbs it a bit so that's exactly what i do.

Tbf having been re elected 14 times and then finished in the relegation zone twice in the fourth tier, isn't it less depressing playing at a level where you aren't down the bottom a lot of the time?

I'm looking forward to not actually being the worst team in our league (hopefully) after the last couple of years of being utter shite in both L1 & L2, even if it's a lower level. Losing every week isn't fun.

Talking of non-league clubs, we came up against Staines Town in the Ryman league - step 3. We beat them in the playoffs in 2008 and got automatic promotion the following season. Staines did make the National League South but eventually they dropped like a stone and eventually folded.

I was reminded of this when I attended my aunt's funeral in Staines earlier on today. Road signs still direct people to Staines Town but it's currently Brentford's training ground.

We're live on Skysports at Derby 12.30 kick off today and you can expect to see what supreme quality we'll bring to L2 next season and those who have been promoted will see just how tough L1 actually is when compared to this little pub league.
