Here we are, the last city before the top 3 and just missing out is...

4. Liverpool

C&B Opinion: Ay, ay, calm down, I didn't vote for it!

Description: Liverpool, a city on Merseyside, just misses out on the top 3 of this prestigious list. If you didn't know, Liverpool is famous for being the birth place of The Beatles and the city has been dining out on that for decades. It's like Status Quo living off the royalties of Rocking all over the World. The local dish is Scouse or Lobscouse, a stew made from any old shite a person can find and gives the colloquial name for a resident of Liverpool. The world's first passenger railway line was built in 1830 and ran between Liverpool and Manchester giving the townsfolk of both an opportunity to express their hatred of each other more quickly. One of the largest industries in Liverpool nowadays is insurance to compensate all the people who have stuff nicked by scousers. I went for the first time this year and I was pleasantly surprised to be honest although it is way too highly placed in my opinion.

Famous People: Derek Acorah, Ken Dodd

C&B Fact: The Film, Hunt for Red October was filmed there. The name is in reference to the hunt for an October where Liverpool are still in with a shout of the league title. The hunt continues.

Quite chuffed Dundee made it on the list even though I haven't voted at all in this thread. Its not the best city by a distance in the UK, but its not bad. My brother-in-law comes from Milan, loves it here and prefers living here than there.

Glasgow should be higher up though, it can be a brilliant place.

You're pleased it made it on to the list containing all the cities in the UK?

I made a brave decision moving to Liverpool for uni without ever having been before (mainly because there seems to be a stigma/negative reputation that remains) but was very pleasantly surprised. Didn't think it'd quite do so well in this but I can't imagine anywhere being better as a student to be honest.

Thank God Liverpool didn't win it, still about 50 places higher than it should be.

Here we have the top 3 cities of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as voted for the good people of 1FF.

3. Bristol
Bristol_hotels_skyline.png

Result_Bristol.PNG

C&B Opinion: The fuck is this shit?

Description: Democracy works ay? Bristol is the UK's 3rd (that's THIRD) best city, the mind boggles. It is Southern England's second most populous city and next to the quite spectacular Bath. Continuing the theme of unimaginative place names, Bristol was originally known as Brycgstow meaning "The Place at the Bridge". in 2014, The Sunday Times named it the best British City to live because you can easily access Bath and it's half the price. It has a proud sporting history with Bristol Rugby club and Bristol Rovers FC being examples of its excellent clubs. A block of flats from Bristol was used as the exterior shots of Nelson Mandela House in Only Fools. The world famous artist, Banksy is apparently from Bristol.

Famous People: Justin Lee Collins, Stephen Merchant

C&B Fact: Gary Glitter was arrested after a bloke in a Bristol branch of PC World found indecent images on his laptop.

2. Edinburgh
skyline[1].jpg

Result_Edinburgh.PNG

C&B Opinion: Now we're talking. My number three.

Description: Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and best city, as voted for by you! The name is derived from Din Eidyn which is Celtic in origin but Din was replaced by the Old English word burh and moved around to create Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline and dates from the 12th century and was apparently the inspiration for Hogwarts. At the bottom of the Royal Mile (actually 1 mile and 107 yards) is Holyrood Palace an official residence of Queenie. Each summer, the city is taken over by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with comedy acts being the centre of attention. One of the most famous former Edinburgh residents is Greyfriars Bobby, a small terrier who watched over his owners grave for 14 years. He's the only dog to have been given the freedom of any city in Britain.

Famous People: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, James Clerk Maxwell

C&B Fact: The words "until dead" were added to the sentence of hanging after a woman was hanged in Edinburgh and later woke and was set free.

1. London
London-skyline.jpg

Result_London.PNG

C&B Opinion: There's plenty to hate but it's number 1 for a very good reason

Description: London is by far and away the runaway winner in this poll. It may perhaps not be surprising however with the negative rating available and the proliferation of people who seemingly dislike it, I thought it may be dragged down. Indeed, it's the reason I included the negative aspect. Yes, 99% of the people are arseholes and it costs £34.50 for a lunch but there's no city for it for the scope of the archetecture, the history, the diversity and you could spend a month there and still not get bored. The London Underground, the oldest Metro system in the world is instantly recognisable and as much as I hate it at times, it is the best rail network I have ever used. It is the world's most visited city and in 2012 it became the first city to hold the summer olympics three times.

Famous People: Far too many to mention

C&B Fact: Cock Lane, near Holborn Viaduct, didn’t get its name due to any association with poultry, but because it was the only street to be licensed for prostitution in medieval times

Just in case anyone is interested, here are some alternative top 20s.

First up - just counting the number of times the city was in a top 5 list.
Positive Scores.PNG

Oxford and Sheffield would have fared much better using this system. Not a huge change though.

Secondly, using a normal scoring system of 5 for 1st, 4 for 2nd and so on. No negative scores used.
Normal Scoring.PNG

Birmingham is the big mover here showing that perhaps the negatives let it down a bit.

Again, the top four would have remained unchanged.

Cheers C&B. Four of my five made the top 5.

My father used to work for a printing company in Cock Lane in the 60's/70's.

There we have it. Thanks again for all who voted and commented, it's been a good thread I think. I won't be doing another one though as it's taken fucking ages and the lack of likes makes it just not worth it you miserable bunch.

There was talk of an international version if I sell the rights...watch this space.

Much love C&B x

Yeah, well done C&B.

Finally, democracy does work. London, worthy winner. Everyone else, fuck off you peasant scum. Especially Bristol, didn't even get half the votes... Losers.
