Likes ball playing defenders and playing out from the back to a fault, will often persist in trying to get defenders to play that way even when they can't. He seems to prefer holding midfielders with wingers and target men providing the threat, but was pretty flexible in his time with us and has made use of attacking midfielders and tricky forwards like Devitt and Asamoah too. I'd say he's a pragmatist and is not above playing long-ball when the situation calls for it and loves a good substitute (I believe under Curle we had the highest number of points won after making substitutions). I hope your local media reporters are prepared for interviews where they can't get a word in edgeways and Curle asks himself more questions than they do.
Sounds promising. Actually quite excited if he gets the job- better than Steve Davis anyway. Would you of liked him to stay?

Yeah, the majority of fans did, I think a poll came out at 80% even though the United fans on this forum tend to go the other way. HG felt he was too defensive, which with his holding midfielders and wingers philosophy you could argue but it really depended on the circumstances, we could play excellent football when things were right but he wasn't above parking the bus and his man-management skills and relationship with the fans are both among the best you'll find at this level.

I'd say his flexibility means he's a good manager to have if you don't know what sort of season you're going to be in for. There might be better managers to have if you know for certain you're going to be splashing out on big names and going for automatic promotion, or if you know survival will be a struggle but those managers might then fail if things turn out differently, how would Danny Cowley cope with a relegation dogfight? Could Ronnie Moore mount a promotion challenge? whereas Curle should get a good team challenging for promotion and keep a poor team up.

I had a look on the Macc forum, and saw this comment.

"A difficult call, except perhaps a retired big-name player from the Premiership or Championship, who wants to get into management? "

The person who wrote that does know that Sol Campbell fits that description and is desperate to get into management right?

How is your owners' relationship with the fans. If it's good then it would be interesting to see how Curle does there, as everything he did with us regarding uniting the fans behind the team and motivating everyone was done against a background of negative and secretive owners who had an awful awful relationship with the fans and I believe that's been a hallmark of his career, working under Trew at Notts County and Haslam at Mansfield and that Scouse gangster at Chester. Could be amazing with the right owners.

Yeah I saw that too- why on earth you'd want Sol Campbell ahead of Keith Curle I'll never know.

The fans relationship with the owner is terrible. He's none existant and pockets any money the club have. The fans relationship with the chairman is terrible too.

For a promoted team who spent a while in non-League there seems to be a distinct lack of buzz around the place.

He'll struggle to make many substitutions when our budget only allows for a squad size of 11. :bg1:

Keith Curle is massive favourite to be our new manager. What kind of manager is he? What's his playing style? Long ball etc? Any info would be much appreciated.

Curle is a half decent manager. In the end he'll make you solid and hard to beat, you'll probably have a better away record than home. But before that he'll take you through some phases. In our case it was an awful phase where we just dug out results, then a play it from the back entertaining all out attack phase, then a functional efficient phase, and then a horrible long ball dire football but kind of effective phase.

He doesn't really develop young players, maybe the odd one now and then but in the main he usually goes for proven players at this level or the level above. He needs a decent budget to attract these players, I think that's a big part of why he left Carlisle because he got told he wasn't getting the big budget anymore.

I don't know what your budget will be like. It will be interesting to see what he does.

Shoddy I don’t want to see H*****’* name mentioned on here unless he’s dead

Why? Looks a nice chap. Maybe one day he'll make a glorious return to Field Mill, and with Carlton Palmer in his rightful place back in the Mansfield dugout will finally get you to the Premier League.

So John Sheridan appointed. Obviously a better option than Slade and some of the others mentioned, but it’s hardly an appointment that’ll excite the fans.

Can’t see us going down under Sheridan, another boring midtable season I reckon.

Do you know what? That will do.

A few days ago it was looking like we were going to be stuck with Russell Slade. At least this guy has actually won League 2, all be it 7 years ago.

Another tick in the Carlisle and Notts County are the same club theory book.

But no I think that Sheridan could be a decent appointment for us, he has had a bit of an inconsistent career but for a club like us it might be good considering the other options we had.

Hang in a minute, when are you going to be taken over by a fat guy who managed to convince an old guy that he was Arabian royalty? Until.then, we aren't the same

As for Sheridan, he's Oldham's version of Barnet's Martin Allen! You say he'll keep you up but it was under Sheridan we went 10 games without a win! You'd surely be better off with Curled?

I'm with HG in the 'he'll do' camp. Plymouth fans had some gripes with him but he's never done especially badly anywhere, so a reasonable choice.

Well Yaya Kurdi isn't royalty but is both fat and Arabian, or going back further maybe you are referring to the we were about to be 'taken over' by a guy who turned out to be a curry waiter without two-bob to rub together.

Are you sure we're not the same club?

I think we would have been better off with Curle than anyone linked to us this summer with the exception of Hopkin, but our owners had made their minds up.

I'm looking forward to see what players he can bring in and how we start off.

Yes and no. Sheridan is obviously capable of being a decent manager as he's largely been, but he was a complete car crash at Notts.

We were a mess at the time, but still had quite a good team (the core of it went on to have play-off form and then challenge for promotion under Nolan). The problem was that Sheridan is probably the least inspiring man on the planet. When the players weren't being paid and the fans had openly turned on the board and then the team when we broke our club record for consecutive defeats, it needed someone charismatic to try and unite the club (as Nolan was able to), but that just isn't what he's capable of. He still signed some reasonable players, mind, and was doing okay until things started going wrong off the pitch.

He won't get a friendly reception at Meadow Lane, anyway - ended up taking us to court for unfair dismissal. We claimed that he'd been sacked for an incredible touchline meltdown where he told the ref that he'd ruined his kids' Christmas and ended with him threatening to knock out a linesman, he claimed that it was merely for losing ten games in a row. He won (obviously), but had some gall even going after it with his record of defeats.

Never known a football manager who so clearly hates being a football manager as much as Sheridan. Uninspiring, dull and tired. Obviously has a good record previously but must have had a much better attitude than he did at Notts.

Always thought Sheridan was unlucky at Notts. He inherited a total shit storm, poor team, club for sale, ridiculed chairman who left it to his incompetent wife to run the club, players not getting paid and fans with no belief and just ready to kick off.
DId great at Newport the previous season and Plymouth before that, just picked a terrible time to be at Meadow Lane.

Yeah, he clearly just didn't have the heart or fight for a difficult situation. Not entirely sure why he took the job in the first place when he was already at Oldham, to be honest.

He'll fit in well with our board then, sounds like the most perfect match for them seeing as they don't want to own a football club.

Na Curle needed to go Shoddy. He largely did a good job but once we got close to promotion but fell at the last hurdle, it’s was never the same, it went stale. I think Curle’s biggest failure was his lack of willingness to either sign young players with potential resale value or give our youth products a chance. That didn’t sit well with the board who were backing him with big budgets but were getting nothing back in return.

Interesting in the Sheridan statement it specifically mentions developing youth players. That must have been something they insisted on when recruting a manager

It seems every time we appoint a manager we have to go to Notts County fans for feedvack. I remember “odious Curle and his dickhead son” last time
Now it’s “dull and boring Sheridan who hates being a football manager”

It seems to be the same with players, both ways.

We are the same club.

I'm an Oldham fan but live in West Cumbria.

I think this is a good appointment for Carlisle, some Carlisle fans seemed underwhelmed by Sheridan but I really believe you will have a good season.

If Sheridan had stayed at Oldham we would not have been relegated but the club was in turmoil and going through a take over, and for one reason or another Sheridan sadly left.

He is a legend at our club as a player and manager and I for one will be wishing him and Carlisle have a great season and it may make our games a little more interesting, especially if we are both fighting for promotion.

Cant wait for our games now and good luck to Carlisle, I hope you get promoted, in 2nd place to us though.

Treat him well and I'm sure he'll do well for you.

I always felt Sheridan gave up at Notts, we started well but when it all went tits up behind the scenes he didn't care. The players had clearly stopped playing for the club, never mind him

Apart from when he lost 9 maybe 10 games in a row with notts...

I think the thing about Sheridan is that when things are going well he's not bad, but he struggles when things go a bit pear-shaped. He seemed to have a real big problem motivating people, and he carries an air of negativity around him, something listening to his post match interviews he sounded near suicidal. Other small things like cancelling the player's christmas party and the infamous ref rant back this up. Admittedly there were off-field issues at the time, but he hardly helped put a positive spin on things.

On the plus side his signings were really good in general, they just weren't very good under him...

This thing with Curle and youth players seems to only have cropped up in the last couple of weeks, I think since Nigel Clibbens said it was one of the things they were looking for in a manager. I don't really remember anyone complaining in the previous four years that Curle wasn't giving the youngsters a chance. More people seemed to be complaining that the kids who came through the academy simply weren't good enough and suggesting the board were trying to push them into the first team before they were ready with the whole development squad thing.
