As the article states, this is a 1-season experiment. As far as I'm aware, the clubs have to vote again on its continued used and the PL or EFL cant (directly) force anything through.

Nice of Derek Adams to stick his nose in on other club's affairs:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37934696

Asking other teams to be fined... that's pretty low to be honest.

Frankly, they can do what they want. If they want to fine us, fine us. We'll just pay it. We can afford it and several times over. The EFL have to live with the consequences and the bad press.

Why should clubs, with a lot of history at these levels, be acting as a de facto pathway for players at PL clubs? Why can't our own young players be given equal opportunity?

What happens if a club refuses to pay it?

Kicked out of the competition for a season? What a tragedy that would be :ffs:

Yes because the Premier League don't always get what they want. If they want this to continue then it will.

They are literally making it up as they go along ! ......so , correct me if I'm wrong ....the 2 under 20something teams when they play each other have to play x amount of young uns , whereas the 2 'normal' teams have to play x amount of first teamers ? .....who is benefitting ?.how ? And why ? .....and how can the same competition have 2 sets of rules ?

It's a good response but not sure the last point makes sense - looking at the list of fines, it seems to me that the clubs who subbed their keepers immediately have actually been fined as well.

But yeah the fines are an absolute joke, we've done as much or more than any of the u-23 teams to develop talented young English players in this competition but because we don't get the privilege of a "B" team our youngsters obviously can't be talented so don't count. I suppose in this instance we don't have much choice as it will be deducted from our "prize" money for the two victories, but if they try to fine us when we inevitably breach the rules in whatever round we get knocked out in (i.e. when we won't be given prize money to deduct from) I'd love to see us just outright refuse to pay up. What are they going to do, kick us out of next year's competition? There won't be a competition next season anyway the way it is going.

I'm 100% behind Luton's decision to play their kids, and I would have liked us to follow their lead. I also agree with Luton's statement but then again rules are rules, and the FA would've looked silly if they didn't fine Luton and the other clubs. Or should that be sillier?

btw, I don't know what Gary Sweet's saying re. fined the max amount for the Gillingham match?

Luton Town average age - 20.9 Vs West Brom ACADEMY average age - 22.1.

West Brom lost 2-0... Luton get 15k fine.

Why are West Brom's youth team allowed playing time but Luton Town's aren't? More pertinently, how is Shaun Harvey still in a job?

Absolutely livid. Time to take this to parliament frankly.

Resign Harvey.

So Luton won £20k in prize money for two wins, got fined £15k in return. We're £5k up on the deal and we made the Football League look stupid by punishing us for fielding English qualified youngsters when supposedly the whole aim of the competition revamp is to help bring through future England players. I'd call that a pretty great outcome.

It's absolute bollocks. It says it all that the "EFL" are getting tough on a joke competition which no one goes to watch, while they sit back and watch as owners consistently runs their club into the ground on their watch.

So the clubs that were fined £3000 - they subbed players early in matches I'm guessing including goalkeepers?

So what rules have they broken?

Has there ever been a more unpopular head of the Football League.

Shaun Harvey is coming across as an absolute joke, but he'll still make out the EFL Trophy has been a success. Luton have got it bang on with their response and should be applauded for it.

The appeal process - were going to be asking the same people who punished us in the first place to change their mind.

It's a diabolical system. A kangaroo court.

If this farce is allowed to continue past it's trial period clubs really need to refuse to take part.

It's a farce frankly and Harvey needs to resign because he has over seen this total shambles.

I'm not surprised however. We were never going to be able to get away with it because of the fuss people like Derek Adams, who seems to have missed the picture here, would have kicked up. Doesn't look like there is much solidarity between clubs unfortunately.

First time I have disagreed with Adams. He should have said nothing and let the competition organisers make their (wrong) decisions. Can see why you are annoyed with him. Not a defense but I assume he feels that Argyle have been at a disadvantage. Playing Carey last week had us all very nervous. Fact is though all Div 1 and 2 teams are inherently at a disadvantage. Glad we are out of it. I would much rather Adams called for a boycott, than criticise other teams.

I agree we had an advantage - it was visible in our win v Wycombe earlier in the season, that essentially all of our players had a week off, whilst an already threadbare Wycombe squad had to play midweek. That said it swings and roundabouts; we had the extra exertion after our intense League Cup games. Not that I'm making any excuses for any fines etc.

Not trying to make a political point, but surpised no one has mentioned restraint of trade under EU directives. Which given that presumably "trade" is important to the sponsors is somewhat ironic.

On not paying the fines, I bet you won't actually get the prize money until after you are out, so they will simple deduct it from your tab.

Which bit are you agreeing with, that it is restraint of trade or that no one has mentioned it? Or both?

I wish that Adams had done the same, not just to save Carey and co, but to make a point. That said I do unfortunately understand why he did not, and probably if I was in his shoes would have made the same decision.

Just when you thought that the footballing authorities, in this case the FL, couldn't make themselves look any more stupid............

I haven't yet seen any of the FL's comments on the 'invited' clubs demanding changes to the rules before deciding whether to enter or not. This included in some cases, deciding which date to play on (Chelsea and others), which ground to play on (West Ham), even though the dates and grounds were apparently compulsory. And I'd like to see the FL's comments on the number of foreign and/or over-age players selected, which seems to me to go against the idea of giving British/English academy players experience to aid the plan for England to win the World Cup again sometime this century. And of course, giving the kids experience is exactly what Luton HAVE done.

FAO the FL - MAKE A NOTE OF THE PLAYERS THAT LUTON HAVE USED IN THIS COMPETITION - QUITE A FEW OF THEM WILL BE TOP, TOP PLAYERS IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE, IN FACT WE HAVE ALREADY TURNED DOWN BIG BIDS FOR SOME.

And I haven't even started on their conning of Lge 1/2 clubs to support the whole idea BEFORE they had bothered to even ask the Prem clubs if they were interested - as we know, a number of them weren't!

Perhaps someone better than me can come up with a way of reacting to this, without impacting negatively on supporting our own team.
