It's ironic that the 2 teams in the play-off final both had managers who a good proportion of their fans rated as distinctly average.

Does it therefore follow that if either of those teams had had a Steve Burr or a Neil Aspin, they would have pissed it.

I'd not want Aspin at this club, not a chance.

Burr probably, if Hurst can sign the players and Burr sets the tactics, winner.

I think what pissed a lot of our fans off was not so much his management ability, but his
comments after bad results, never admitting when he had made a mistake.
No really faulting the guy on his results, can't see any other manager here picking up as many away points as we did last season, and that is all down to the way he sets up away from home, so in my eyes having either of those other managers would have maybe not even gotten us into the play offs.

Not sure we've ever rated DC as average. Maybe after the first few games there were groans from a selected few, but since then he's been brilliant. To build a team capable of going back up straight away, especially after some of the shite we've endured over the last few years and the pressure that comes with the job, is no mean feat!

But yes, Burr or Aspin and we would have pissed the league, I'm sure of it

There was only really Lew who was staunchly against Hurst and Clarky a bit too, however both of their criticisms of him weren't unfounded at all. Feral (hahaha Frealaf autocorrected to Feral NEW NAME) has always been very pro-Hurst and the rest of us sit somewhere in the middle. As fans, we're obviously going to praise him when he gets things right, but we're also going to point out his failings too. He doesn't help himself by never shouldering the blame either. This is something that has really rubbed Grimsby fans up the wrong way. Both Hurst and Clarke have seemingly improved over the last 12 months. Hurst especially has demonstrated that he is capable of abandoning what had previously seemed to be very stubborn principles.

Anyway, I wouldn't want Burr or Aspin over Hurst. I think Burr's fairly overrated by most down here. Admittedly, he's got an excellent track record of discovering, nurturing and bringing through talent from lower divisions but how much of that is actually down to him alone or the network he had at Kiddy? He seemed to it with a lot more regularity there than he does at Chester. Hurst has proven himself to be more than adept in the transfer market and is improving tactically. Personally, I'm not sure of how good a tactician Burr is.

Hurst has certainly improved since going it alone but I still have reservations over whether or not his conservative nature will ever be enough to win Grimsby the league. This season is probably as good a time as any though with no outstanding candidates.

Also got to remember he has only just turned 40 last season, we are his first full time club and his first club as a single manager. He is still learning his trade.

Obviously as Grimsby the fans expect a great deal especially in this division, but if he wasn't our manager or ever was and had the record he has our fans would be calling for Fenty to hire him. He is improving and will get better.

Though I do agree if we don't get promoted this season I think it will be his last, he will certainly lose the fans if that happens as he very nearly did until this season just gone.

He seems to be signing actual proven goalscorers this season which is a good sign.

I agree with the conservative comment, it's all well and good being able to do that away from home but you can't use those same tactics at home. Our home performance were generally pretty poor throughout the season, we'd scrape the wins often enough but very rarely did we bring a team to BP and rip them to pieces. Too often we let sides back into the game by just letting them have the ball, it worked away from home but let us down in the end at home. I feel he's very tactically unadaptable which goes along way to explaining why we seemingly never come from behind to win games. But as said he's learning, time will tell if he carries on in that vein.

I think there will always be something infuriatingly stubbourn about him though, no matter how well he does in his time. And I think it's very easy for fans to just forget how close he came to losing the fan base, I feel he has a 'Chester moment' in him still and I'm still wary whether he is the right man to lead a title winning side. But he's certainly gone up in my estimations.

Unfortunately he got recalled - we managed to re-sign him permanently that summer but he was a shadow of his former self in my opinion. Looked lost, severely lacked confidence to take a man on and struggled under pressure as the team under performed.

However, he's still relatively young, and now he's back up north it may suit him a bit more. Very much a confidence player (in my opinion) and if he gets that back, he'll be a good asset at this level.

He was on loan here towards the end of last season but didn't really impress me that much to be honest. Only played a handful of games (mainly as a sub) and scored one goal but there's a lot better out there I'd say.

There was talk of him signing for us permanently but I'm not that upset that he hasn't.
