A little like Jack Wilshere, I could never really understand what the big deal was with Barkley and that hasn't changed.

I notice there is a gap in posting from 11/12 to today during which time Everton beat Arsenal. I assume this is just somewhere for the typical football fan to come and slate a manager when he loses whilst forgetting the moments of success?
You probably won't want to check out everyones favourite Pardew thread...

If what you are saying were true then that topic would have far more pages than it does.

Check his record for 2016 and get back to me, rather than kicking a dead horse.

Labelling Barkley as a player that "could have been good" is a little premature, he's only just turned twenty three.
I still think he will turn out to be a good player. Unfair to criticize just him when Lukaku got bullied by Klavan yesterday.

Enner Valencia might as well not have turned up, too.

Lukaku's only scored two goals in his last six matches. (Both coming against Watford.) For someone angling for a move to a bigger club all the time he sure does escape a lot of criticism.

Think he's disappeared in more games than he's actually turned up in this season.

Since the days of TFF I've been saying that Lukaku falls well short of world class definition purely because he blows hot and cold far too often. He's the type of player that can score 5 goals in 4 games and look a world beater then not look like hitting the net for the next 8 games. To give you an example, in the last two seasons he's failed to score in Everton's final 10 league games. Until he sorts this consistency out he'll be a good striker but nothing more.

Jesus, it was merely a quip. How joyless it must be.

I think it's indicative of how terrible a lot of teams are this season that Everton have won 2 league games in 12 yet are still top half. Their easy start certainly helped.
Wouldn't disagree with that. I also think that for all the fluff last season that various ex footballers and media 'experts' trumped about how lovely and competitive the Premier League really has always been on the pure basis of Leicester being champs one season, this season seeing how that gap between Spurs-Man Utd-Others has formed by mid Dec, they're suddenly not quite so forthright with that opinion any more.

Basically needed Chelsea and a couple of othera to sort their underperforming selves out, remove the anomaly in Leicester, and we're back to the norm.

Joyless? It's fucking terrible, this calendar year has led me to divorce my wife and disown my kids.

Seriously though, you persistently bringing it up like you're right, and that Palace fans are the new Newcastle fans. Your mob were far harsher to Sam than we or Newcastle fans are to a man that wins 1 and doesn't win for the next 10. And then blames it on bad luck and refereeing, every week. "Oh we played well and gave our all but the ref was blind and God didn't want us to win."

"Joyless" was in reference to not accepting/liking/being able to skim over a quip and half-joke, rather than an assessment of Palace fans. Which I never made, ever - I even bothered to check the other thread to confirm. Glad to be of service to help clear that up.

...apologies the little half joke exploded into a crossed thread. No need to have two threads on the always average Pards. Banning myself from both threads from now on.

Yeah, calm down Skinner it's just a streak mate. A very streaky year long streak covered in streaks.

He's English, that was it.

I've always said he'll be the new Jermaine Jenas.

One way he won't match Jermaine Jenas in in his punditry. Is it just me or does he look like the kind of guy who doesn't know what day of the week it is?

He makes Rooney look like Gore Vidal. There looks like there's absolutely nothing going on in there, and he plays like it too.

There was/is more to it than that. There are a lot of decent players who are English who weren't as hyped as Barkley was 2-3 years back. The guy clearly has potential, I just don't think that potential is or was as big as some made out. Regardless of the list of stats on a continually posted screenshot.

Why stop there? His "combined" stats at that age will easily trump Xavi, Iniesta and Pirlo.

If you had never seen him play, you might think he was a good player.

To be fair Martin Keown did say he would be one of the greatest English players of all time.

Not sure I recall many decent English youngsters who weren't massively overhyped, this was around time Phil Jones was the new Duncan Edwards and Jack Rodwell the new Rio Ferdinand.

And wasn't Martin Kelly referred to, possibly on this forum, as the Liverpudlian Sergio Ramos?

I'm not judging him on one game, I thought he was rubbish before it, I think he's rubbish after it.

What perhaps I didn't know, was how much of a cowardly thug he was - not sure if it has manifested in the past.

Don't like facts do you, stats as per picture put him up there with the likes of Scholes and Lampard and he has 3 yellows to his name......lolz

Well it depends on the facts and the context.

The 'facts' as you present them state he is a better player than Scholes, Xavi, Iniesta or Pirlo at that age. So either stand by that or renounce it entirely.

Personally, I think it's nonsense and he's not a good player - poor players do manage to score and assist in the Premier League, he'd hardly be the first.

Well at that age the FACTS say he is and some people might even say at a better club he would be even better........but hey its xmas who gives a toss?

A couple years ago he was a really good prospect and tbh I was a bit envious that Everton had him coz I thought Barkley what a great successor he'd be for Gerrard if we had him. That age from 20 - 23 is an important stage in a players development and I don't see how he's progressed since then .Certainly there hasn't been significant improvement and now he's beginning to leave that age group where he can no longer be described as a prospect.
He's looking more like a Rodwell than a Kendall.

Lol I know what you meant man, don't worry. Any reason to over exaggerate my dislike to Pardew.

Barkley won't reach his potential as long as his managers keep playing him as a number 10/attacking midfielder. He's not good enough to play there consistently. Put him in centre mid and you get the best of him
