A poorly thought through power balance for me. The Tyrells bring in most of the City's food - if they were threatening to "pull out" and the Queen and her brother were locked up and about to face trial who do you think the common folk would rally behind? Religion? Or the people who provide them (admittedly small amounts) of food?

Mobs are rarely rational.

Those last 20 minutes were awesome.

Spoils for Jockers:

It's almost certain that Olly will do the stabbing judging by the scene with Sam about the "greater good" today. Kit Harington has signed on for two more series' so will either survive it or be resurrected, either by Melisandre or the Night's King himself who will attempt to make him commander of the White Walkers.

Maybe

I'm starting to think that Melisandre has been using Stannis to get to Jon this whole time

Just caught up and watched the last episode. Not sure I get the love for it to be honest. Still not a big fan of this series (still better than 90% of shit that's on mind).

"Of this series"

If I hadn't watched so much of it I would have given up. I've invested time so I'm sticking with it. Gave up with the books though.

Really struggling to care too much about series 5. It's getting better slowly, the latest episode was pretty damn good but overall it's been a bit dull. Sansa needs to get her norks out.

It's hardly unprecedented for people with nothing to cling to religion and be willing to die for it. Tommen isn't well-liked in the first place, it's the worst kept secret in the kingdom that he's a bastard. It probably wouldn't take much for it to kick off if the Faith Militant wanted it to. I don't see why the common folk would rally around the people who have just cut off their food supply.

Ah, series for me means the whole, erm, franchise as opposed to season which means a set of 10 episodes.

I dunno, I mean surely some of the peasants are gonna be like "hmm we can't really live off prayers once the Tyrells/Lannisters are gone". I mean they're probably getting next to fuck all in terms of food as it is but surely they'd get even less if there was none coming in from outside the city? It's not like they can grow their own stuff inside the city walls. Plus, say they overthrow the Tyrells/Lannisters completely, what then?

(This has gone too in depth hasn't it. I don't really care this much, honest)

Episode 9 released early...

EPISODE 9 SPOILERS
Stannis burns Shireen, with his wife begging him to stop....

What D&D, what, that... what. No, just no. Nope. I knew it would happen in TWOW, but with Stannis not being for it happening, not being the one doing it...

Fuck sake. If that's true (which I don't doubt), I will be very annoyed. They've always been anti-Stannis but I thought they'd taken some decent steps to resurrecting his portrayal on the show this season.

This is the same as the Sansa problem. They're sacrificing character development for the sake of shock value. In their minds they probably think that this will make Brienne killing Stannis all the more appealing to viewers.

Based on what I saw of the scene, I have a theory...

I think Melisandre used some of her mind-fuck juice on Stannis and that's why he did this. In the scene he looks a bit fucked in the head, and remember when the writers had that scene where they had Melisandre show his wife her potions and shit she uses to sway people? Hmmmm

I'm more likely to give them the benefit of the doubt on this. Purely because I think it might be a case of trying to reach an end point via different means, for all we know the next book could see Val(?) kill off Shireen but obviously that character isn't in the show but they still need to find the same endpoint. I don't think it'll be a case of Stannis suddenly shifting his entire moral standpoint either, there's more likely to be a bit of voodoo at play to persuade him

So Stannis burns Shireen? It does seem to go against his character in the books and I always assumed Melisandre could do it without his knowledge but this quote from the writer seems to imply it may pan out similarly, which is a pretty big shock....

"When George first told us about this, it was one of those times that I remember looking at Dan, and going, god, that's so horrible, and it's so good, because it all comes together in a story sense. From the very first time we meet Stannis and Melisandre, they are sacrificing and talking about king's blood, and the power it contains, and it all leads to this, to the sacrificing of Shireen."

Daznak's pit didn't really do it for me. I guess it was always gonna be difficult to pull that off without looking incredibly cheesy, but it just seemed to fall flat.

Really loved the pit myself, thought it was great minus one scene which had poorer standard CG than the rest of the scene's. Everything else was good from an entertainment standpoint.

The Stannis thing is really hard for me to wrap my head around. I and many others knew this would happen in TWOW, it's just the manner of how it's done. Stephen Dillane nailed it, he is so good. GRRM's comments really leads me to believe that Stannis will maybe not be as involved with Shireen's burning as he was in the show, but still accept it. Stannis isn't above that, even in the books he isn't that great of a man. I'm just really undecided on the scene.

Agreed hodge.

I didn't think a dude having his prepubescent daughter burnt at the stake was dramatic enough either. I thought Drogon's return was great though. Dem dragons yo.

Hoping Davos loses his dog like loyalty to Stannis when he finds out what has happened.

I think the production quality of the stuff shot in Spain is noticeably worse than the rest. From the fight choreography to the merging of special and visual effects, it all looks a step down from what we're used to.

I liked at the end where they suddenly all had throwing spears to hit the dragon with but none of them thought to throw them at lil Khaleesi and her protection of about 8 people totally exposed in the middle of the pit.

Also a bit confused by this Sons of the Harpee shite now, how many of the fuckers are there? Last night it appeared as though pretty much any character in Mereen with a bit of wealth or nobility stuck on a gold mask, I thought it was more a select underground clique type thing.

At least, I hope, the eagerness to gets the dragons involved means Dany's story will get accelerated a bit compared to the books

Fairly certain they didn't want to kill Dany, if they did they would have an entire Unsullied army to deal with, taking her hostage is safer for them to get them out the city and is more valuable. That's why they didn't throw the spears.

shocking season 3 death(s) - betrayal by the freys / boltons ends the entire force of the good guys. makes sense because dakingindanorf broke an oath with a total shit, allied with a total shit and was at war with a devious total shit

shocking season 4 death - loveable rogue gets head squished in the arena. makes sense because he took liberties in a fight against a giant monster of a man
