If anything, isn't this all the more reason to consider the appointment of Rodgers a failure?

One of the things that English clubs have to deal with because of the wealth they have in comparison with other leagues, is that they have to pay a premium on players from the continent and even more for a good English player (which I always find strange tbh). It has been a hit and miss policy on signings, but we don't know if he is the one making the signings to begin with. In the papers just the other day at the meeting, it was apparently stipulated that he'd have no further say than that currently on players coming in. We thus cannot judge Rodgers alone on the signings; and he is doing an adequate enough job overall imo, far from failing. Yes things have to be addressed over the summer and into the season, but they are fixable and the situation is not catastrophic.

What is your definition of failing? Because he hasn't met Liverpool's objective in 2 of 3 seasons and has zero accompanying trophies to paper over this. I don't buy for a second he doesn't have a say in transfers. Maybe not as much as a Wenger, but the latter has earned that distinction. Even if Liverpool's main target was only 5th place (which is ludicrous), Rodgers has still failed 2/3 seasons.

You say it is more difficult in England because of the wealth, but I find that bizarre. Shouldn't clubs like Sevilla struggle compared to Liverpool since they have around half of the revenues?

I don't think anyone has said he does not have any say in transfers (Joe Allen and Borini). But decisions like signing Balotelli, which I am sure he did not make, ruined our season.
Seems like Mike Marsh is the fall guy since he is being sacked.

Brendan Rodgers on May 28 of last year: "Obviously, I am involved heavily in the identification of the player. The principle idea when I first came in was that like any manager you will have the first call on a player and the last call. That’s the call on whether he’s good enough to continue to look at and try to organise a deal and the last call to say yes or no."

Trying to use the transfer committee to defend Rodgers in any way is naive. He's obviously a massive part of the structure of it. I'd also be more eager to question his management and tactics rather than his transfers for last season's failings.

Not defending him. Just saying that he shouldn't be blamed solely. If it was up to me I would have sacked Rodgers (his staff) and the transfer committee.

Strange that Rodgers' backroom staff are being culled, his assistant Colin Pascoe and first team coach Mike Marsh. Talks of goalkeeping coach's job being on the line too.

I think it's either Rodgers covering his back and putting the blame onto them. Or maybe FSG have put Rodgers on borrowed time, getting rid of his key backroom staff will force Rodgers to work with people he doesn't want to and force him to quit. That way they don't have to give him a payoff.

I've always heard of managers working with their trusted team and take them wherever they go. Talks of Zenden or Hyypia coming in as assistant and I can't think of Rodgers ever working with them so its a strange situation.

It keeps them all on their toes, shame for those that lost their jobs however.

Rodgers obviously sold them all down the river during that meeting to buy himself another 6 months.

Snake like behaviour from the lizard man.

The blame culture has been growing rampant since it all went to shit last season. Mario, the transfer committee, Gerrard, Gerrard's retirement announcement, Sterling and now the backroom staff.

Remember when the buck stopped with the manager?

Clearly he has thrown them under the bus, otherwise he would have handed in his resignation. Will be interesting to see who FSG will choose as a new head coach and assistant manager.

If Jurgen Klopp does take a break from the game, Rodgers will be under pressure from day one next season.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.

It's not like any of them will be on the breadline..

As will Pellegrini, Mourinho, Van Gaal, possibly even Wenger and every other manager of a top CL side.

Rumours going round that Ian Ayre leaving the club. Either sacked or heading to Standard Chartered.

If true...hours on earth is Rodgers still there?? I understand the need for a shake up but it seems the buck doesn't stop with the manager.

Ayre did well in getting some great sponsorship deals but I question how he allowed so many transfer targets to slip through our fingers in past few years. Contract negotiations with existing players most likely lies with him and that has been a mess.

This extremely fake looking photo is doing the rounds now. The story goes that he is pissed up on a flight home...on cheap vodka. It's the little details that make the story.

He's likely drinking away his troubles with the transfer commitee that is tarring his reputation.

It seems that they were sacked as in they had come to the end of their 3 year contracts and were let go of. I'm curious as to why they weren't offered extensions when Rodgers signed his new deal last year, and therefore if it was an intentional thing to review their positions after 3 years come what may.

All Liverpool need is some decent strikers. They were fourth highest in the league in terms of chances created last season, despite how poorly things were going for them.

Don't do it. It's literally ALWAYS something with us. Something to give that false sense of hope.

We've been creating a bucketload of chances since Dalglish came in. Took us one of the most gifted players in recent Liverpool history to surge up the table.

I am a proponent of advanced metrics in sports, but accounting for the quality of each chance is more difficult to quantify. QPR finished 7th in chances created and finished dead last. You're more likely to force chances when you are drawing or losing a match, so results are dictating the data. Too many variables for that to be an important stat. If—as in NHL hockey, another fluid sport—statisticians created metrics such as Corsi or Fenwick for football, it would have more meaning with statistics adjusted for +/- scorelines.

Have a like for mentioning metrics in a football forum ;)

Great excitement among Liverpool fans but Firmino looks like a Sterling replacement. Seven goals and ten assists in the Bundesliga, compared to seven and seven for Sterling in the Premier League. Best case scenario is that he turns out to replicate what Suarez did, which was peak after a couple of inconsistent seasons.

Don't think this alters Liverpool's prospects for 2015-16 much. Once Sterling goes, it's as you were. They still need a top class goalscorer. Bacca's looked shit every time I've seen him play but his record is great so perhaps he'd be worth a punt.

Even if Firmino is a Sterling replacement, I wouldn't mind. I think he's more versatile as an attacker but not as versatile as a player, which is a positive (stick with me here). That Sterling can (supposedly) play at wing-back and similar more defensive roles is a hindrance to both him and the team when Rodgers feels he can crowbar him in there. With Firmino, the temptation to do so won't even be there, and he's just as adept across any of the three behind the striker as he is being the central striker itself.

On top of that, if Sterling is sold it means £50million is coming in. To sign his replacement for £21m-£29m is obviously good business, and signing him before Sterling is sold means that Hoffenheim won't grab you by the bollocks on the fee.

Completely agree that a striker is needed however. Still think Benteke might be the best, although having just seen the money spent on Firmino, will the club be willing to spend another £30m+ on one player?
