:hail: Rico. A blast from the past.
Musically speaking (and otherwise) I tend to live in the past but the only album I've got is This Man is Forward (vinyl) and it's getting a bit worn.

I like how he was around as part of the original ska scene in the 60s and turned up to help out the Specials in the 80s. It must have been great for them to have him on board. When was your album released? I'm guessing mid 70s?

That's the first Yellowman tune I heard as you included it on that compilation for me, I've loved his music ever since.

It's my favourite Yellowman tune. It's got a really infectious sound.

Just dug it out. It's 1981. (I got it after seeing him play with the Specials in Cambridge). The search also dug out some good, bad and ugly that might get a (brief) airing - Aswad, New Chapter (also 1981); Marijuana World Tour (Jah Woosh); and Gosh It's.....Bad Manners. The latter, "In the words of Ron Chopper Harris, a subtle blend of melodic and rhythmic structures encompassing many poular music idioms." I clearly had more money than sense, with occasional good taste, in the 80s.

Whoa, you saw The Specials first time round? That must have been great. New Chapter is an ok album, their earlier stuff is good (Hulet). I've only got one Jah Woosh album. It's a clash with I Roy - We chat, you rock, it's a good album. Was Gosh it's the one with Can Can on and Walking in the Sunshine?

They were it at the time - in a marquee with a mini football riot as a sideshow - I stood well at the back with the wife (probation officer) and a solicitor friend whilst their clients got stuck in..... "To add to their woes, the tour was marred by audience violence which disrupted gigs in Newcastle, Leeds and Cambridge. At Cambridge, Hall and Dammers attempted to intervene to stop fans battling with security guards. The pair were arrested, charged with incitement to riot and fined £400. "What started out as a big party ended up like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," says Roddy Byers".

The Jah Woosh is and always was terrible.

Yes that's the Bad Manners - I was quoting from the sleeve for Walking in Sunshine. Can Can is "A little known folk dance thought to have originated during the Rumanian Turnip Revolution of the early 14th century. In Hawaii, it can still be heard toaday at the place of its origin, but is only used as a sheep dip warning."

What was the cause of the trouble? I read Horace Panter's autobiog and he said the NF and BM used to turn up causing trouble at some of their gigs.

Two Bad Dj, Eastwood and Saint . Used to have that on vinyl.

I still have it - £4.99 Our Price label still there. 10 brilliant sunny tracks.

As I remembered it, the trouble had been brewing up Newmarket Road after a match but the main event was when a lad got jumped by a gang (I lived way out in the fens in those days and didn't get into Cambridge much - so wasn't clear who were bouncers and who were just lairy at various stages) in the middle of the floor and Terry Hall was calling them out to distract them from kicking the shit out of the poor lad - "If you want some, get up here and show me what you've got," or similar.

Apparently the band remembered it differently - or at least had a different perspective.

"...In Cambridge, an audience member jumped on-stage and attacked the support band, The Swinging Cats. Violence between bouncers and the audience flared throughout The Specials' set. Terry Hall hurled a mic-stand at one bouncer. Dammers announced that the band would stop if the violence didn't cease: another bouncer got on-stage and threatened him. After the gig, Hall & Dammers were arrested at the behest of the promoter and charged with incitement to riot. They were fined £400.

Even Hall, usually redoubtable on-stage, was perturbed. "As a group we're now thinking whether or not to carry on doing tours," he told a reporter after the trial. "We don't like violence at our concerts, we've made that clear from the outset. We offer music as an alternative to fighting. It's easier to use your energy dancing than punching someone in the mouth. Anyway, if the fighting doesn't stop, there's only one way to make it stop. We either stop gigging or call it a day......."

Sounds like it was a chaotic night.

I've got a lot of respect for Jerry Dammers, he seems like a sound bloke.
