Some of the numbers being banded about this season is insane.

I remember people saying Andre Gray will not play higher than L2, when it was clear to me and others that the boy was class. Same situation with Watkins afaic. He's still young and raw and can only improve. Will he look out of his depth at Championship level? Absolutely not.

BTW, I had actually heard Exeter were asking for 2 million, and I thought they were crazy tbh. 3/4m is more like it for a game winning player, esp. when considering how much Championship clubs spend on simply plain average players.

Honestly feels like a new signing having our number one Tommy Lee back training in pre season after missing the whole of last year! He's ahead of schedule aswell so all positive news

I'm glad you've brought that up. Because I was saying it time and time again. And I was constantly called delusional for it. I didn't think he would become close to an established PL player though.

JJ isn't in the same league as Andre... yet, but I suppose it's not a like for like comparison. Gray could change games on a sixpence.

Was always going to happen at some point.

Every passing year, with PL Clubs/Championship Clubs with parachute payments (even after those, there are some well financed in there), Club's ask for more money from them, which gives them money to play with and others Club's are aware of that and bump up the price. The next Club in the chain goes the same way, just on a slightly smaller scale etc etc.

Even we've sold a £1million defender this summer.

Looking at the Andre deal now with all the other deals that are going on, 600k looks like nothing, not least the fact we have just flogged Jack Marriott for 450k. We've been protected by the add ons that have netted us another £2million but it's clear that even in the last 3 years transfer fees have lept up.

Chesterfield join the race to sign Harry Pell according to our local paper http://www.gloucestershirelive.co.u...chesterfield-join-race-sign-cheltenham-197396

Wouldn't sell him for anything less than £6m. :animatedf:
We were linked with Pell a couple of seasons back when Saunders was gaffer down here but nothing ever came of it...

Never seen him play so no idea how good he is, but if he's a tall, strong, box to box centre mid then he fits the bill..

How much do you think it would take realistically for us to get him if we're in for him?

Yeah and with the huge increase in transfer fees (£80m+ now seems to be the going rate for an international striker in the top European divisions) it's only right that some starts to filter down to this level. We may not like it but we'd like it even less if our clubs were only getting 250K for promising players in an era of skyrocketing wages, agents fees and average Championship players changing hands for 5 or 6 million.

On a related note, how is the new ruling (season after next I think it comes in) forcing clubs to name at least one player that came through their academy going to fit in with all this. Some clubs down here don't even really have academies to speak of thanks to EEEP and with PL and Championship clubs able to snap up any player with even the most meagre promise before they get out of our academies does that not just punish us, forcing us to play those players who might not be good enough. I know for a fact we don't have any players in our squad for 2017/18 who came through our academy who I'd be happy to put straight into the first-team squad, but that's not for lack of investment in our academy, there are plenty of players who came through our academy currently padding out the development and reserve squads of PL and Championship sides.

Tall, strong, box to box centre mid - describes Pell perfectly. He's arguably our most important player and has two years left on his contract so I'd hope we'd hold out for a decent 6 figure fee, maybe somewhere around 200-300k. Rather he just stayed though.

If that's the case then it doesn't surprise me that we may be interested in him!

I think our number 1 target is Jose Semedo though, so I don't think we will pursue Pell unless that deal falls through

We won't pay £100k nevermind 2, 3 times that! Can't see there being much in this

On an interesting note related to the inflation of fees (and I almost started a separate thread regarding this the other day) it might be worth stating that the next EFL TV contract will be worth more than the ill-fated ITV Digital contract was to all league clubs. (Which was £105 million p/a in 2001-02)

The current TV contract with Sky is worth £90 million p/a and this expires in 2019 with the league deciding not to extend that agreement for a further year.

League Two clubs each got £500,000 p/a in central funding from the ITV Digital deal in an era before PL solidarity payments were introduced. Currently, each League Two club gets 3% of a third year PL parachute payment (3% of £16.2 million = £486,000) just for a solidarity payment from the PL. With the EFL TV money set to significantly increase plus with the added Checkatrade bungs from the PL, we could see clubs spending a lot more and fourth tier wages skyrocketing as the lower league game catches up to where it was at its most recent zenith in 2001. In turn, this would make the gap between the Football League and Conference grow even wider as getting into the league becomes even more lucrative.

The health of the lower leagues has recovered so much considering the many lows of the 2000s that occurred with dozens placed in administration, but naturally, the PL, FA and Shaun Harvey seem adamant they want to ruin the pyramid that is the envy of the footballing world. It'll be interesting when the solidarity payments become so great that the PL dangle the B team carrot once again with a threat to withdraw the funding like the trojan horse it inevitably will be...

We've signed striker Luke James from Peterborough. Ex Hartlepool and was on loan at Bristol Rovers last season.

Reading Gas forums sounds like he has a lot of talent but unfortunately for a striker didn't actually score much. Maybe a league lower and a new club will get him going, plus the Doidge magic rubbing off.

I figure there's no harm in letting everybody know we've got a couple decent players we're looking to get rid of, at today's inflated prices of course.

Mark Roberts - young, fast, hungry CB. Solid as a rock as they say. £15
Liam O'Neil - spectacular box-to-box midfielder. Sublime passing skills. £10

A fiver discount if you take both off our hands.

I'm prepared to give Liam O'Neil time. He joined mid way through the season and was played as a holding midfielder when he doesn't "look 'ard" so didn't suit him. Let's see how he gets on with Hatchett Gary next to him. Might free up his game a bit.

But yeah, can't see Roberts getting a game with Coulson back and now Darling coming into the fold.

May not be worth 3M realistically but
Donal Mdermott confirmed. 1 year deal.
Good move I think. Need wingers. Meant to be talented but have a bit of an attitude issue, knows he'll have to knuckle down or non league beckons.

Agree. Wonder if that's why only a one year contract? Apparently Zavon Hines has been quite impressive on trial. Might be worth a deal and then that should be us more or less there I reckon.

The guys a very hard worker but just couldn't find the net.We even set him up with a penalty last season but he still missed. I think he could do well for you guys and I wish him all the best.

Sounds like these highly fancied young players at L2 clubs don't have release clauses. How can that be? Our owners led us to believe it was impossible to offer a contract to a young player at this level without including a release clause equivalent to a couple of pies and a pack of fags. Perhaps someone could contact them and teach them what witchcraft they had to pull off to get these players to agree to such a thing.

Poor sod did everything but score. In a game against Southend he had one cleared of the line and one off the post. Pretty much summed up his season. Hard work, good distribution and good positioning but had the reverse Midas touch in front of goal. I reckon if he gets a couple early he'll score plenty for you lot.

Sounds like he just needs to score then we'll see the real player he is! He'll probably score against you lot in pre season ;)
