I disagree. Over recent years in L1, we have tended to get better results against top half sides than those in and around the drop. Infact, I think it was the season before last we literally picked up 1pt out of a possible 24pts against the 4 relegated sides.

For example, we play Coventry at home on Saturday and I am not expecting to win.

You also have the like of Sheffield United and Millwall to play at home, do you expect to beat them then?

I get that fans are sometimes pessimistic and just don't fancy their team at times but to say you're going to lose because you're shit when you're playing a team that is quite clearly worse is daft.

I wouldn't expect to beat them no. But then again when we do its no real surprise. It's typical latics. Take Scunthorpe this year for example. They were flying and we hadn't won for ages. But it was typical latics when we beat them as league leaders on the 18th October but didn't win again until 14th jan

Like your thinking seen as we play you tonight, we a very different proposition now, than we were under Robinson, much better form, shame the play offs are a step too far, but a season of mid table mediocrity will do for me.

Big weekend at the bottom.

Northampton v Chesterfield
Gills v Vale
Bury v Swindon
Scunthorpe v Shrews
Oldham v Cov

Won't be a decisive weekend by any stretch of the imagination, but be interesting to see how the teams at the shite end of the league stack up against one another.

Northampton v Chesterfield - Chesterfield's off pitch problems go on and can't see them getting anything off it in this one so 3 points to the cobblers
Gills v Vale - This won't even be a contest. Vale are abysmal away from home so a comfortable home win here
Bury v Swindon - The levels of shit will be off the scale in this one. Bore draw
Scunthorpe v Shrews - Not sure many will look beyond Scunthorpe on this one but could easily be the weekends coupon buster
Oldham v Cov - Do Coventry still bother to turn up for matches?

Hi all, new member here.. after viewing the site for a few months I decided to sign up and chip in. Here is my opinion of the relegation scrap, starting with my own team Shrewsbury Town.

After Salop changed managers before Christmas it now seems like we have turned the corner. Bottom of the league and 5 points adrift when Paul Hurst took over, we now find ourselves in the dizzying position of 18th, 4 points above the dotted line. New additions to the squad have bedded in nicely and there is a genuine feeling of optimism amongst supporters.

The job is by no means finished and there are some tough fixtures coming up, but I do feel like we can definitely survive. Plenty of twists and turns ahead for sure!

A quick assessment of other teams plights in the relegation dogfight, from the outside looking in..

Bury FC - after witnessing Bury last weekend, it seems a lack of quality in midfield and the inability to keep clean sheets could be their downfall. However they do have goals in the team, so there is still hope

Oldham Athletic - whilst looking stronger defensively, Oldham don't seem to score enough goals. In my opinion they look the most likely to survive out of the current clubs on the bottom four

Chesterfield FC - losing to Oldham did them no favours, but only 3 points adrift with a game in hand means there's still hope

Coventry City - what a mess at Coventry... Cut adrift now, surely they are doomed. Got to feel sorry for CCFC fans

Port Vale - could be in trouble after early season promise. Teams from below have now caught up. Games in hand need to be taken advantage of

Swindon Town - another club sucked into the dogfight. Fans seem to have lost confidence in the management team

Gillingham FC and Northampton Town - in my opinion they are going to be ok, 5 points clear is a healthy cushion unless there is a downturn in fortunes, which could see them reeled in

I don't want to predict who will be in the bottom four, its too tight at the moment and very unpredictable!!

As an outsider looking in, I personally think the four teams to go down will be:

Coventry - Yeah they're doomed already, don't really need to justify this.
Swindon - Whoever is even picking the team at Swindon isn't doing a very good job. Power/Sherwood/Williams out, who knows.
Chesterfield - It's not really going well for them. Their team isn't the best and losing O'Shea didn't really help.
Port Vale - They didn't look bad at GP the other week but I don't think their team is strong enough. Losing Grant and Alnwick without any real replacements being brought in was a big blow.

Our fate depends a lot on how quickly the new look side gels to be honest. Plenty of quality to stay up within the squad but needs utilising and gelling very quickly as time isn't something we have much off.

At least Coventry might finish in the top six next season, they might be able to shut up about it then.

I see that we aren't being mentioned as true candidates but I don't share your views, these next two games are massive for us...

Vale could have had a nice 5 point cushion this evening but decided that wouldn't be as interesting so we gifted Gillingham an equaliser in the 227th minute (this may or may not be an exaggeration).

Shrewsbury's win over promotion chasing Scunny nears them to mid-table obscurity, and Oldham continue their win-lose trend and rise to a place of safety. Coventry lost  as did Chesterfield who are starting to become adrift - are 2 spots now taken already?

Still anyone's guess who will escape this mess and who will plummet to L2, but right now I genuinely fear that Vale could be one to plummet. At least we can all look forward to the famous Vale-Crewe matchday threads though

Our next two are Chesterfield (H) and Coventry (A). Couple of wins would shunt us a bit clear.

We've played well enough in three of the last four games and should of picked up more in each of them barring silly errors (usually by Purkiss!)

Had we won today I'd have felt we were going to be ok but we need to turn it around quickly into wins.

Millwall A followed by two winnable home games could define our destiny.

Gills, Vale, Bury, Swindon or Oldham to join doomed Coventry and Chesterfield it seems.

Our games in hand give us an advantage but if your a Valiant, Gill or Robins fan the current form doesn't look promising.

Or a couple of defeats and you are right in the shit
Well yes.

We're 8 without a win and we're still 4 points above the bottom 4 with a game in hand, it's not as bad as some are making out. Couple of wins over the next few weeks and we'll be ok, which I'm sure we will be. And even if the worst happens and we get relegated then so what - we've been down there before and we'll end up back there again at some point no doubt, it's not the end of the world.

It doesn't help that the controllable stuff like fitness training seems to be non-existent based on our game. Teams can still be fit even if they are crap. Swindon is probably the least fit team I've seen in over 30 years of watching professional football. Some of your players were blowing out of their backside at the end of the 1st half.

We are abysmal.

You can see it, we can see it. How on earth those supposed professionals running the club can't is beyond me.

Why don't the players speak up and say 'we're not fit' - have they no personal pride?

Under Page the amount of late goals we conceded was ridiculous. I don't get how paid professionals can't work out why their teams look knackered with 70 minutes gone.

Coming up for Tuesday's game?

Has Edinburgh improved that? It's weird, for the last couple of months of his reign here we looked knackered all the time, since Pennock has come in that has improved. It's quite regular for a new manager to comment on the fitness (or lack of) of his new team on appointment, it's becoming a common trend!

Silly post. You know we won't make the top half next year.

Agree on the players and having some pride. I would work on my own fitness outside of training if I was that unfit as a professional. It is supposed to be their livelihood but they aren't helping themselves.
