So you're using arguably the best keeper in history as the yardstick for 'top class' then. And you think that's fair?
Which goalkeepers in history actually merit being considered 'top class' then if the measure is to be better than what's currently the best but possibly one of the best ever.

Well, he was one of several I mentioned - I discussed 5 in that post alone and could have cited many more.

Who, exactly, should I have compared him with?

If you like, take Buffon out and only compare him against more recent keepers like De Gea, Courtois and Donnarumma. The result is the same.

All the keepers you listed would concede goals with that Sunderland defence in front of them because the majority of the time they're wank.

Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford will be the two keepers fighting it out for the number 1 spot for England in the future and for me and many others who've seen him play reguarly Pickford takes it.

You can't compare Heaton and Pickfords careers yet, Heatons 30, Pickfords only 22, at 22 Heaton was still playing in the championship.

Lenny Pidgeley then...

Well, at least the above proves Southgate isn't the worst person for the England job.

That for me is our best team when everybody is fit and in form. I'd maybe toy with Rose over Shaw due to the Spurs familiarity at full back.

Welbeck would add real competition for Lallana and Sterling as well. In time, I think Rashford becomes a big threat for Kane's spot. Vardy for me doesn't have enough strings to his bow to be an effective international starter. I see him as an impact sub when you're defending a lead and want to hit on the counter. Sturridge was excellent a few seasons ago for England. He's not quite rediscovered that magic yet although I do think he is our most talented striker when he's on it. He needs to knuckle down at club level though and cut a few of the unnecessary touches and greed from his game.

Yeah i like Welbeck also as he can play anywhere across the front line and always seems to perform well for England but i would like to have creativity on one side in Lallana and speed and guile on the other in Sterling to have that balance. Agree about Rashford being a first teamer in the future but he has a lot to learn first especially in the link up department and decision making. I think Vardy is perfect for defending a lead like you said for his speed and finish but when he's isolated and needing a goal he becomes unreliable. Ross Barkley should be in the squad aswel because he's a huge talent when he's on his game and can be a real impact sub but Southgate has failed to see that atm aswel as big sam did Which is astonishing.

The thing with Barkley is, if he's not playing well he's a passenger in games - games pass him by with only some widely variable set pieces to show for it. In comparison - When Dele Ali has a bad game, he's still effects the game in some form with his aggression physicality and pressing. Even on days when the technical side of his game is rusty.

In an international squad there probably is room for a couple of wildcards and Barkley would come into that category for me, just in case England catch him in good form. But he's not someone (currently) who England can think about building a team around, like we can with the Ali/Dier axis and Sterling.

Regarding Wilshere, I see him getting better, quicker and more confident every game now, not to mention completing 75-80 mins every week (touch wood that continues), but he isn't playing central midfield here. He's playing further forward than that, more number 10, giving his body less running and tackling to do. No idea if that's a phase or a long term switch.

Always been a fan of Welbeck for England and I hope he comes back from injury in decent shape. Players who England can rely on for committed and reliable performances, who perform better for country than they do club, are rare finds indeed.

Better squad than the last he picked but still would swap at least 2 like Oxlade-Chamberlain for Townsend and Barkley for Drinkwater, he cant have watched Leicester play earlier for him to pick Drinkwater surely.

Nice milestone for the club, all be it a loanee.

Wilshere is now playing 90 mins, and is effective for the majority. Plays number 10 for us, not central midfield per say.

Please try to return him uninjured. Cos he's been brilliant for us. Ta.

You seem to really rate Barkley for some reason...

Depends what he wants Drinkwater for. If it's defensive cover he's got better stats than any other English mid for tackles and interceptions (or he did before the WBA game).
However if he wants him to pass a ball he's fucked it right now. Even passes to the keeper. Didn't get in when he deserved to, now he's in when he shouldn't be.
Barkley though has been dropped from his side and then come in and had 1 decent game?

I do rate him highly tbh, he has all the attributes going its just about putting all that together and consistency but he's still very young all will be a top top player in a few years time the same with Dele Alli.

Drinkwater and Forster pull out - Cresswell and Pickford in.

Danny Drinkwater has misplaced more passes (154) than any other Premier League player this season.

Maybe not a great loss right now then.

Whats the need for 3 left backs in the squad pretty pointless might aswel have put Oxlade-Chamberlain in there as he would have more chance of playing than Cresswell.
