Dark Skies (2013) 7/10.

Some scay scenes in this alien abduction film which was better than i expected after reading some reviews.

Glad I've found somebody else who liked Dark Skies. There were a couple of very good jumpy moments and I thought it was a good little story.

The Maze Runner (2014)
It was alright I suppose. Colony of young men/boys have spent the last three years trapped in a lovely little vale surrounded by an ever shifting maze inhabited by giant robot/spider hybrids. 6/10

The Last Days on Mars (2013)
Loved this one, absolutely slated by the critics but I thought it was pretty enjoyable and did what it says on the tin and all that. First mission to Mars is in the last 24 hours of a six month cycle when they find 'something', all hell ensues. 8/10

A truly brilliant film. I do like a good missing person thriller and this was one of the best I've seen. For 2 hours 20 minutes, it didn't drag, the pace was kept up by a variety of different angles cropping up. I was pretty close to getting the twist, there was just one piece of the puzzle I was a bit confused over but the twist itself was very good. Hugh Jackman was superb through. Gyllenhall also played his part superbly. My sort of film. I even thought it ended perfectly.

10/10

Really enjoyed that film. As you say, thought the pace was executed nicely.

Everly - Joe Lynch

Set pretty much solely in an apartment, Salma Hayek fights off hitman after hitman (are hitwomen called hitmen??) after going back on her word to her ex-boss. Parts remind me of Kill Bill and the majority of the action scene were well done. It got poor reviews but I thought it wasn't too bad. Just don't go in expecting too much.

The Haunting In Connecticut 2 : Ghost Of Georgia. 5/10.

I like a good ghost story but this was average at best, too cliched with the little girl and the dog, so much movement at the end i couldn't work out what the hell was going on. Oh and the dad crashes his motor into a tree causing a big gash on his head but the next scene it had suddenly vanished.

Interstellar - 7/10

Enjoyed it but that last third of the film proper lost me. I admire it for its ambition and maybe now I know what to expect from it, the last hour will make more sense on a rewatch.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Got the DVD of that the other day. Might give it a go tonight.

I really enjoyed Interstellar. Preferred it to Inception. Another great soundtrack from Zimmer, too.

Recently I've watched Nightcrawler (decent plot, Gyllenhaal was very, very good 8/10), Crazy Stupid Love (I was made to watch this one but to be fair I quite enjoyed it. Would turn for Gosling 8/10), The Bridge (documentary about people who jump from the Golden Gate Bridge. Suitably depressing and a bit slow 6.5/10) and Layer Cake (I can see how Craig got cast as Bond, otherwise another decent flick 7.5/10).

Also watched Nightcrawler recently. Agree with Mustard that Gyllenhaal was great but didn't rate the film at all. 5/10.

Fast & Furious 7- They get more and more far fetched each time, but entertaining nonetheless. 6.5/10

Clown- Didn't expect much but surprisingly a very good watch. Didn't hold back on the gore side of things, as you'd expect from an Eli Roth film. 8/10

The Vikings (1958):
I think I reviewed this on the previous forum however I've just watched it again so why not do another.

It's one of my favourite films. A little bit cheesy at times but it has some great scenes, acting and music. The ending scene of the viking funeral is stunning and the main theme makes the hairs stand on end. 9/10

I think we spoke about it on TFF, and I said I'd need to get round to watching it once more - still haven't as yet! Want to compile a list of Kirk Douglas films to watch as I've always liked him but haven't seen him in all that much.

Which ones have you seen?
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Lust For Life, Paths Of Glory, Spartacus, The Vikings, Lonely Are The Brave, The Brotherhood and Tough Guys (remember that coming out, seems like yesterday - it was 1986!).

Going through his IMDB filmography, there's probably a good dozen others that I would watch as well.

The Harder They Fall (1956)

Bogey's last film about the murkier side of boxing and the cost of it on the fighters both physically and financially.

Very good film starring the great man where he plays a respected journalist-turned-promoter who teams up with the always excellent Rod Steiger as the crooked fixer who has no morals and whose only concern is getting his money by any means, and gets a useless big lump built up to have a shot at the heavyweight world crown and doesn't care if his fighter gets literally murdered by the champion.

A bit preachy at times, but it did have a pretty shocking real scene in it where a boxer of the thirties (Joe Greb playing himself) who has fallen on hard times gets interviewed for real in an unscripted and unrehearsed segment, and he is clearly extremely brain-damaged with all the blows he has had upon him over the years and it is quite harrowing to watch to be honest. It also has real class with some top names in it including the ex-heavyweight champions Jersey Joe Walcott playing the big lump's trainer, and Max Baer playing the champion in the last fight (and was the 'baddie' in the film Cinderella Man for anyone whose seen that), along with another old pro Pat Comiskey (who was knocked out by Max Baer in one fight). This added credence to the film and raised it from being just a good film with an important message, to a very fine one indeed.

Well worth a watch.

8/10

Probably my favourite Norman Wisdom film, watched it so many times but it never fails to crack me up. 8/10.

My parents almost called me Norman after Norman Wisdom. Is it now one of those "so old-fashioned it's cool" names yet? Am I missing out?

Good atmospheric psychological horror from down under. Kind of got the feeling the writer/director hadn't made up her mind exactly what kind of film she wanted it to be in parts but on the whole very enjoyable. 8/10
