Cold In July [2014]

A normal family man finds a burgler in his house one night and shoots him dead accidentally. Then he finds himself stalked under what appears to be the burglars father out for revenge and then things turn again and the film proceeds and becomes something darker still.

What starts off as what appears to be a simple revenge thriller takes on another form when the the second part of the story comes in, which I didn't see coming and it makes this a more interesting film as a result. Good acting from Michael C. Hall as the honest family man just trying to do what's right, and the ever brilliant (and multi-talented if you look at his bio) Sam Shepard; and features a welcome return to screen of Don Johnson too.

A Million ways to Die in the West

It's a story that's been told a thousand times before and for a so-called comedy, a smirked a couple of times. Pretty bland and forgettable.

Angel Heart [1987]

Mickey Rourke and De Niro star in this tale of demons, voodoo and the devil himself in this tale where Rourke is given a job to find a person suffering from amnesia, yet gets caught up amongst murders, yokels, hot as hell women and stranger things besides. It has an excellent though not entirely surprising twist at the end which makes you rethink all that you've seen, and is a very memorable film indeed.

Interstellar [2014]

Nolan's latest is ok, with some excellent visuals and big ideas, with more than a little nod to the masterpiece that is 2001. It was also a bit flat, overly sentimental, with a score that was far too noisy (though with Zimmer what else do you expect) and the constant use of Michael Caine in his films gets on my tits.

Just watched this. Largely agree with your write-up. I was a little disappointed by it, a little underwhelmed. The score was excellent though I thought.

It may need another watch to grasp the full story.

The effects and the scope of it was well done and I normally like Zimmers work having a number of his soundtracks in my collection. However this score did nothing for me apart from the bit where they reach Saturn but even then it was a few quiet tinkles on the piano before the blaring cacophony came back whenever they travelled anywhere.

Just watched this (well, an hour of it) after seeing your post.....

You've let me down. You're usually spot on with your films but, I'm afraid I can't agree with you here bud....I thought it was a right bloody stinker.

Had to turn it off when the 'twist' was fully revealed, as I couldn't see it going anywhere after that, and there was still 50mins of the film left to run. I was bored stiff.

A tad premature of me? Maybe so, but I just wasn't convinced by it at all. It all seemed a bit 'tinpot' to me. 3/10

Anyway, I watched "City Island" instead (Andy Garcia & his sexy daughter). Which was much better.

The wife wanted to see it so I've just rewatched it but on the TV rather than the tablet. It was better second time around in all honesty. I still disagree about the score, I really liked it. I still feel like I'm missing something with the film though.

Mad Max : Fury Road (2015)

This one started off quite well and was as bonkers as what I remember of the original films were. However I felt Tom Hardy didn't nail the character well and he actually seemed to play second fiddle to Charlize Theron throughout. It also didn't seem to go anywhere, all they were doing all film was getting chased and that quickly began to become monotonous imo.

Would still watch a sequel if it gets made however to see if they could take Max onward a bit and get his car back and I've always liked the films apart from that Tina Turner one.

I watched Entourage today. I liked it. If you aren't a fan of the series you probably wouldn't like it or 'get it' though. It did feel like a whole potential new season condensed into a film though, which was a shame.

King Lear [1971]

The ever magnificent Paul Scofield in the titular role as the doomed king. The version I saw wasn't a great copy, but it did have some superb scenes between the cast as the destructive events unfold.

The Drop [2014]

Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini and Noomi Rapace start in this Boston-set tale of barmen who launder money for criminal gangs and things kick off in multiple ways when the bar gets robbed and also Rapace violent ex-partner shows up to threaten her and the simple-minded Hardy.

It wasn't what I expected from any of the characters and Hardy is good once you get past his dodgy Boston accent (which was quickly in my case), while it is also a sad reminder of the loss of the talented Gandolfini playing someone who is trying to rebuild his supposed reputation. Some might find this a bit slow and it isn't an all-out action affair, but it isn't bad.

Yeah that bad, I'm baffled by the decent reviews. Haven't watched Sinister 2 so can't compare it with that but it was awful. Fair play to them for making it seem decent on the trailer. Definitely advise it if you want a good laugh with your mates though
