The Tree Of Life [2011]

Expansive and thought-provoking film from the usually superb Terence Malick about the nature of life, family, the universe and everything. Chronologically and narratively mixed, this is a non-linear and strange film that at once tries to play out a brothers relationship with his kin in the fifties; a jump to today when he is at middle-age, wondering what its all about; and at the same time, we witness the origins of the universe and life itself.

It doesn't quite work, and it feels a bit pretentious at times, and can accidentally run like a perfume advert; but its admirable stuff to try and take on something so gargantuan as this, and Malick is usually one for these types of films, so it is to be applauded yet an honourable failure in the end.

7/10

Paddington [2014]

Fantastic fun from start to finish, this had it all, laughs, tears, great set-pieces, and fun cameos. Really hope they do a sequel

10/10

Star Wars : The Force Awakens [2015]

Terrific reboot of the saga once more; I've waited over thirty years for a proper Star Wars film, and one or two little issues aside, Abrams - as I thought he would - delivers on all fronts to bring the magic of it all flooding back.

8/10

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation [1989]

Not seen this in years, I used to watch it regularly as it was my friends favourite film. The years haven't diluted it that much, and the laughs are still as loud as ever.

Yeah I fancy that, I do like Ron Howard movies and am fascinated by maritime history so I'm sure I'll like this.

Monsters: Dark Continent
A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University -- when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.
The first Monsters film was brilliant, this is a crock of shit. Boring. 3.4/10

Beautifully shot, beautifully acted. Di Caprio on for an Oscar? Performance definitely merits one here

Stir Of Echoes (1999)
Average horror film starring Kevin Bacon. He gets hypnotized after which he sees the ghost of a teenage girl and gets obsessed with finding out what happened to her and finding her body.Could have been so much better but the last half of the film was a chore to watch. 5.5/10.

Was flicking over and saw a bit of that last night and saw a bit where a guy is floating in a chair like C3P0 in Jedi. It didn't look very good, though I do like a bit of Bacon. ;)

Sound of My Voice (2011)

A woman who claims to be from the future is worshipped by a cult. Two "investigative journalists" worm their way in and attempt to document what they see through the use of high-tech gadgets like CAMERAS HIDDEN IN SPECTACLES. Is she bullshitting, will they get sucked in, what will happen? Watch it and find out.

Propa loved it.

Weirdly, the extended edition of The Battle of the Five Armies is a lot better than the ones that went out in the cinema IMO. Yeah it's a bit long, but they cut absolutely loads of battle scenes out of the normal version.

Hobson's Choice (1954)

A jolly widowed alcoholic who owns a lucrative shoe shop wants to marry off two of his three daughters, but when he realises the dowry he has to fork out for the two he changes his mind. He thinks the other headstrong daughter is too old to get married and so she seeks to find a man by herself, and she chooses the mercurial but simple shoemaker they have at the shop, which infuriates the father.

She ends up setting up a rival shoe business with her new fiance after falling out with her father, and plots to get him to agree to marry off the other daughters and somehow part with dowries for them.

This was excellent from start to finish; I only got it as I saw Charles Laughton and John Mills were in it and it was directed by the great David Lean; and I'm glad I saw it. The script and comic timing were superb with a few of them playing against type, and it got funnier as the film reached its climax.

Some of the attitudes look very old-fashioned now, but that aside I really enjoyed this.

Another Lean masterpiece

10/10

The Muppets Christmas Carol [1992]

Very funny take on Dickens great Christmas tale. I think it had Caine's best performance! :p

And poor Rizzo!

Great fun.

The Angels Share [2012]

Another Ken Loach social film set in Glasgow about a thug trying hard to get his life back on track after he gets off lightly when he half kills a lad when high on cocaine. He has a girlfriend and is a new father and wants to somehow get out of the cycle of violence and poverty he has known all his life, but doesn't know how as nobody will give him a job since he has a knife scar across his face.

However while on community service, he bonds with the guy in charge (the ever brilliant John Henshaw) and his fellow villains; and they get taken to a distillery where he finds he has a nose (quite literally) for whisky. After learning all about the drink he and his friends seek out a legendary rare and expensive cask of the drink, to steal and sell it to the highest bidder in order to raise the funds so he can get out of Glasgow and start a new life with his family.

Poignant, violent, yet often hilarious film with good performances out of the amateur actors; and despite knowing that they are scum of the earth neds, you find yourself rooting for them and hoping they can somehow get on.

Fucking awful film that had actors in it that could have better actors from a local amateur dramatic society do a better job  i'll give it 4/10 for the large tits at the start and a semi decent battle scene but the rest was laughable.

The Martian winning a Golden Globe for best comedy is a bit odd given that it's not a comedy and the bits that are meant to be funny just aren't.

I recorded this other day (probably same time you watched it) as it sounded very interesting, but have held back as reading about it the reports said it absolutely bombed at box office and doesn't seem to highly rated.

at least with reading someone else watched and enjoyed i'll give it a bash and see what its like.

Well it looked good on telly,it does start off slow but once the action starts you'll be glad you stuck with it. My only gripe was the romance between Ava Gardner and Charlton Heston's characters which was typical of Hollywood in the 60's it kept getting in the way of action scenes.

Fantastic. The first half was fun and the second half was depressing. A little like life itself, am I right, friends?

Thats a great and yet harrowing film. Seen it a few times and some of the scenes are just heartbreaking to watch, especially the bit in the greenhouse.
