The Philippines appointed a seriously troubled man as president a couple months ago and he has given the Police Carte Blanche to murder anyone who they think might be involved in Drugs. Pretty harrowing and the report does contain some nasty images but you can skip through it.

I was going to put this in the Policy thread but think it's a bit different to that and I'm sure that drug users won't be his only target.

Are they including drug users as fair game? Or are they strictly after traffickers, dealers, producers etc?

It's drug users as well. Because they are effectively vigilante squads going around they are shooting people without trial. A lot of old scores being settled as well I expect. Most of the people who have been killed seem to be poor people who are probably users or small time dealer's.

I know it's pretty crazy. Have you ever visited? I know it's beautiful but it always seemed a strange place to me. I know several people who've been though and love it.

What is it that your colleague loves about him?

Had a mates 30th in Manila last year (weekend of the Mayweather Pacqiao fight). I know plenty of people who've been to Cebu, Boracay and the like, who love it, but I found Manila quite horrible. Bangkok is about the only reference point I can make, but a whole lot more disfunctional and far-far sleazier, with absolutely none of the history or character. Everything (and everyone) is for sale, with the nightlife pretty much exclusively for middle aged Western divorcees. It's dirt cheap though.

I'm not really sure how big a problem drugs are there, but I get the impression everyone thinks he's doing a great job of solving a problem that may or may not exist. We keep coaxing our colleague into an explanation, but it basically comes down to liking the Big Guy who's getting shit done (in a place that basically doesn't function...)

We'll see how it progresses. I predict it will end in tears but I don't fully understand the complexities of the country enough to say that for sure.
