Grayson is off to Sunderland.

Preston North End have today been contacted by Sunderland Football Club to ask permission to speak to Simon Grayson in relation to their vacant managerial position.

Having spoken to Simon, he has asked permission to speak to the Black Cats and therefore the club had no option but to allow these conversations to take place, with a compensation package already guaranteed in his contract.

Whilst these talks are ongoing, Steve Thompson will be in charge of first team affairs.

The club will make no further comment at this stage.

Where do Preston look to now?

Reckon you might make a move for Alexander?

Wouldn't be against giving it to Steve Thompson either for continuity's sake.

David Moyes, Billy Davies, Gary Peters... all promoted from assistant.

Alex Neill wouldn't be a bad fit actually.

Talking of Moyes ..... he's available again.

I'd have Moyes back in a heart beat, can't see him settling for the wages we would offer though, regardless of how much he's made in the past few years.

Depressing appointment for Sunderland if true. Yet again they've been turned down by Derek McInnes so it shows how far they've fallen.

I'm not so sure Mark. Without spending much, Simon Grayson has seen PNE promoted, secured at this level and pushed on. I rate the bloke and, if he does go, it's a sad day for North End IMHO. I would understand his reasons for going as, no doubt, he would be on daft money but there's a big part of me that wants to see him stay at Deepdale.

I think he would. Still lives in the area, perfect opportunity to rebuild his reputation.

This was my thinking, seems like the PNE job may be available at just the right time for him.

Was probably comparing it to my own club too much to be honest.

We managed to attract a manager who in his last 2 seasons finished 4th with Valencia and 2nd with Porto, with solid Champions League experience.

Sunderland, a team relegated from the Prem are only attracting managers (and failing) from Aberdeen and Preston.

I think he's done a good job on a budget at Preston, but a lot of Sunderland fans will want an instant return to the PL. I'm not really convinced Grayson is the man for that but good luck to him.

Agreed, he would be a sensible appointment but won't deliver instant results imo, needs time to build.

He'll leave us with good foundations, hopefully the next manager can help us kick on even further. This will be a big appointment for us.

Ownership - Sunderland are struggling to appoint/attract anyone as the owner is desperately looking to sell, but asking for too much money. So an incoming new manager will have no view or understanding as to the landscape at Sunderland in 3 months time. If they had stable ownership and money behind them, then they'd be able to attract a qualit manager at the drop of a hat.

Anyone they hire, particularly if they're employed elsewhere, is a brave man.

Agreed, I certainly wouldn't be going there under current circumstances, especially not if I were employed in a stable job where I'm adored like Grayson.

Grayson could be out of a job in a few months or even weeks. New owners may well come in especially if they are from abroad and want some flash continental guy as they do. If short stays he could sack grayson if they are not near top come xmas. Hes sacked a few managers in his time there. Bad move for simon grayson

Wouldn't go as far as saying adored, still a fair few PNE fans who wouldn't be bothered if Grayson left and have never been a fan from day one.

Plenty wanted him gone after our start last season.

Always bounced back from sticky patches though and we've progressed year on year under him.

The thing is, now that Grayson has asked to speak to Sunderland, would the Lillywhites support accept him back?

Well then, with due respect, looking from the outside they're morons. As you say, you've progressed year on year, and especially considering your budget, are punching above your weight currently, that there was even talk of you making the play-offs last season was unreal considering budgets.

The fact that club have made it public says to me that they're not too happy with him.

I'd be asking for his resignation if he doesn't take the Sunderland job.

I agree.

He's improved a lot in his time here, less stubborn and more expansive with his playing styles, his transfers have mostly been excellent too bar a handful of shit ones. There were moments in League One when sacking him wouldn't have bothered me but he's delivered since getting us back to the Championship.

This is a perfect example of why I asked fellas. I really don't know how I would feel if it were us (and our Manager was any good :ffs:)!

It depends which way he's looking at it really. If he gets it right at Sunderland he's managing in the prem and enhanced his CV even more.

If he gets it wrong, he's made a few quid more than he would here, and as soon as he's out of work he'd walk into another job probably with his previous achievements.

Not sure who I want to replace him, would love Moysie but not sure we'd be able to pull it off.

Lets hope that we can get a replacement sorted sharpish and then it gives the new man practically a full pre season still.
