If you look at the post more closely I was referring to us being called an average side.

Ah, got you.

It's frustrating because on the pitch, it has been constant shit for too long (26 home wins out of 88 games since 2012/13) so the floating fans have gone. The club are then losing some of the hardcore, long term fans, because of their ineptitude off it.

Nicholson having a go because he is outraged at how little some of the players are getting payed yet moaning that Cox didn't leave any of the budget back doesn't really make any sense.

I think his complaint is that the budget is used up, and we have 24 odd players, but only about 8 of them can play to the required level. Cox spent the budget in full but never planned to be here past September, and the squad is a mess - no quality, but enough quantity to ensure the budget is used up. He's now picking up the pieces and getting the flack for it.

The comment about wages is because Hurst asked to leave last month, Spiess asked to leave last week and others are struggling to get by on their wages - causing disruptions that professional clubs shouldn't have to deal with, like players having no petrol to get to training. The squad is full of unhappy kids and useless or injured senior players - lose/lose really.

So what he is really saying is the senior players Cox brought in are not good enough and are being overpaid?
I don't have too much sympathy for these younger players either, it's not like Cox forced them to sign these contracts or lied to them about what they were going to get paid.

His comment that he 'sold them a dream' is quite damning I thought. Reality is now biting when they don't have enough money to live on, or live like an athlete should, but it's not Cox dealing with the consequences. He might not have lied to them, but if you're 18 and desperate to be a footballer then it's probably not too hard to be talked into signing a deal if it's the only one you've got. How much rent in the area is, the cost of living away from home for the first time etc are things you learn when you do it for yourself. But he wasn't planning for the long term, and has left the new manager quite a few problems to deal with. I read into it that he was annoyed that he's getting criticism for being inexperienced when the experienced predecessor caused most of the problems he's dealing with.

Fairhurst (injury), Geohaghon, Heslop and Fisher have offered us almost nothing so far. These are Cox signings, Cox players, and not much use for anyone else. The squad's disjointed and lacking in the quality needed to stay in the division - never a mid-table team in a million years.

wow - quite depressing to read - I thought our 'relegation match' of 2001 was a low + how lucky you were to survive it "unfairly" . . . .but wish you luck - if we didn't have such a solid chairman, it could easily have been us . . . good luck . . .

Thought the post made by Kevin Nicolson in part is utter ballhocks. The players are earning a minimal wage he said, they don't have enough money to live on he said, they can't afford to fuel their cars he said, yet the players drove their own cars to Braintree and drove their own cars to Chester, stayed there for the weekend and had their Christmas piss up in Liverpool over the weekend.

If the players didn't pay who did, is Nicholson a bull shitter.

Torquay Players driveing to away games especially as far as chester is barmy. Would the club not have been better assembling a part time squad instead of getting poor young pro players who are only pro in the sense they do nothing else. Same seems to be happrning at kidderminster. Sad times for both clubs. Wonder if torquay would have been in such dire straits if they had still beem in football league

Seems like the end is not too far away for Torquay. Relegation looks inevitable and when it does happen, from what people have said, it could very much be over for Torquay United FC. It is very sad. I remember how low I felt about our club a couple seasons ago with our transfer embargo and needing to go to the pfa for a loan but your situation is far worse.

There is absolutely no way we'd be in this financial position if we were still a Football League side.

Cox responds;

"So, in answer to the accusation, yes, I spent the budget as any experienced manager would – if I hadn't, Torquay would probably have been starting the season with less than a full squad.

"In terms of 'selling the dream of being a footballer', all the players I spoke to about signing for Torquay were from within the football pyramid.

"All were happy to sign their individual deals, with agents and intermediaries present at most signings.

"The players who signed who were not within daily travelling distance of the ground were given accommodation in the club house free of charge, which was a tremendous gesture by the club.

...and it gets worse.... forward Fisher and midfielder Fenwick have both had their contracts terminated. But on the plus side we have signed a goalkeeper as understudy to Lavercombe from .... wait for it..... Buckland Athletic. And there was me thinking it was all doom and gloom! FGR must be cacking themselves for the upcoming televised game! .... the big question is though, will Nicholson start? ... I fucking hope so, because without him we might just do the impossible and fucking win a game! ....

Buckland Athletic are based in Newton Abbot for those who don't know the area about 5 miles from Torquay, Buckland have risen from the depths of the park leagues, through the South West Peninsula league and have now applied for promotion to the Southern League, from the Western League, Buckland were runners up last season.

Back to all things in the TUFC soap opera, the board finally speak.

We did warn you
If only you could score directly from a throw-in...
Torquay appear to be in a lose-lose situation as the only full-time professionals they can afford to sign up are not good enough for the National League yet Devon does not have a pool of semi-pro players of National or National South standard and is too remote for anyone from outside the region.

People keep saying this yet Truro seem to be doing alright this season & their even further South West

Unless Truro are spunking tons on wages & bringing players in from outside the area.....i know they were doing that last time they were in this league but not so sure about now :dk:

Sound ambitious club but dont always work when a player jumps from step 5 to confrence, seen it fail few times

I'm not as concerned by the part-time/non-contract keepers. All they will do is sit on the bench and only see action if Lavercombe is injured or sent-off. If required, we would get just an emergency loan for anything more than part of a single game. Letting Speiss go and replacing him with these two local players will save a few hundred quid a week for someone else to come in. All being well neither will see a minute on the pitch.

Alex Fisher and Bayan Fenwick have also been mutually terminated today. In a statement, the club have said that some funds are available for new players, so hopefully we will have a few new players very soon after the window opens. 3 new players with some quality and the side would look different.

Appears Toby Ajala is returning in January too.

Quite content with that - he's a damn sight better than our current wing options. January is massive for us I think - if we can get some half decent loanees in.

The money for Lavercombe will need to be used wisely, but I'd thoroughly hope (expect) Nicho to have full reign over that. He needs backing if we are to turn this horrendous situation around.

edit: This post feels the most positive I've done on this thread for a while...

Do you still have Fairhurst?
Yes, he's was out injured for 3months, returned recently, and suffered a further injury, him and Luke Young have been a huge loss for us this season, had both been fit, I don't think we'd be in quite the mess on the field as the club is.

As for off the field matters, the board of TUFC and supporters trust have now issued a joint statement saying the club is looking towards community ownership, with the board and trust now working together rather than on two separate issues, I can now see this happening and the club progressing.

The club will be receiving a transfer fee for young keeper Lavercombe, as said above, and small nominal fee for Hurst if he signs permanently for Guiseley, that and the club player fund is going to be used for squad strengthening in a bid to try and avoid relegation, with must around the club feeling this, is vital.

In his post match interview the Grimsby manager today mentioned transfer paperwork being slow to process at the moment (in relation to Hurst not being available to play for Guiseley).
No news issued from our club but it sounds promising?

James Hurst will not be returning to TUFC, that's a cast iron certainty. From what I can gather, rumour only, he will make his move to your club permanent during this window, and very small fee would be involved.

Yeah, he burnt that bridge. Good player, but easy to see why he was at Hednesford before he came here.

Any spare cash we do have must go towards new players in this month - we have to avoid the bottom four come May.

I'm not sure Waide is the saviour but would have been a useful addition to your team.

Shame he's injured, did alright last season.

He may not be the saviour but he's a damn sight better option than some of the others making the squad currently.

The biggest shame is Youngy. If he had been fit all season there is absolutely no way we'd be in the position we are in.

I just don't get it. When will these clubs understand that being part-time isn't such a bad thing? Have fun signing the worst full-time players.
