The age old saying... if a player doesn't want to leave and the club don't need to sell he's worth as much to the club as they choose.

You'd be mad to turn that down for a 32 year old who has only had 2 (3 at a push) good seasons in 16 years.
Yes and no. That's a really good offer, but like TB says we don't need to sell. If we want to push on next season, then selling our best players isn't going to help, regardless of the money.

£4.5m for a 32 year old?

Bournemouth signed Wilson for £3m from us and he's probably a better player and much younger...

It's an insane offer for a 32 year old Championship striker, and I think one 99 times out of 100 would be accepted. I think the way Ipswich view it though is that they have a decent shot at promotion this season, and he is a proven goalscorer for them, if his goals could get them promoted his value to them would be a lot more than 4.5m they could have sold him for (especially for how much money will be flushed into the prem next year).

It's a risk, but one I'm sure they can afford to take.

Helps already having the £8m pocketed from Mings.

I still think Daryl Murphy is a bit of a one season wonder though myself.

Players are back in training today but it's still dead on the transfer front.

Cotterill is one of the frontrunners for the Leicester job according to the bookies. Uh oh.

If Ipswich were to change their style or system of play to fit Fraser and Pitman in for example - then there's no guarantee Murphy would be as effective again. Seems slightly daft both for Boro to offer and for Ipswich to refuse, but I can understand about the message selling to Boro would send out, so fair play.

I reckon they should have taken it. Murphy doesn't have a long term track record of scoring.....he's more or less doubled his scoring in each of the last three seasons (although a lot less game time two seasons ago). I'm with Madejski and reckon it was a one season thing.

It does seem a lot to offer for him though, with exactly a year left on his contract.

For the record I would have taken it too, I think you could pick up a 15-20 goal a season striker for 5m in this league, and a much younger one at that.

I can also see why Ipswich rejected it though, it's a statement of intent from MM that he's going for it this season too.

Admit I'm disappointed to miss out on Chris Wood. Unlike some, I do rate him. I'm also OK with Joe Mason.
The 'problem' we face right now is that we have two excellent strikers and getting game time might be an issue for someone like Wood....and probably many other PL fringe strikers.
I reckon we'll be better off with taking someone young out of L1 or the Scottish Premiership or the Latvian Vanarama South.

I reckon we should give Aberdeen's Cammy Smith a chance. However, I also think we now have a number of talented 18, 19, 20yo strikers who need to start coming through. Wouldn't entirely surprise me if we don't add anyone else now.

Joe Mason has an awful goalscoring record, I wouldn't spend a 10th of 3 million that is being quoted around for him.

I would have liked Wood too in all honesty, but he rejected us a year ago so I'd rather go for players who want to play for the club than players who think they are too good for us.

I mentioned it in another thread but I'd like us to go for Tom Bradshaw from Walsall.

They're all in it for the money and to advance their career. I was a bit shocked how poor Sagbo and Graham were for us on loan. I reckon Mason will deliver the goods.

Bolton fan I work with rates him, says he's more of a second striker than an out and out goalscorer.

Never worth three fucking million though.

I get that but there's no guarantee that he'll have another season like last. It was the first time he's scored more than 15 in a season and he's 32. Maybe he will carry on though and it'll prove to be a wise decision. Not convinced myself but I don't watch him week in, week out.

That said... if the wiki stats are accurate in his last four seasons (2 on loan) at Town, he's scored 4, 7, 13 and 27. So at that rate, I guess he should score 50+ next season!

I really doubt Murphy will score anything like 27 next season, 15-20 is realistic though. He brings so much more to our team than just goals, if he left then we'd either have to change our style of play (unlikely to happen) or buy a like-for-like replacement (a bit pointless when we could stick with someone who's already familiar).

Agree with the Ipswich fans on this one. We are rumoured to be potentially losing Byram for £8m and we could demand more for Cook but if you're in with something of a chance of promotion, money in the bank isn't going to get you promoted if you can't replace with better. Although obviously we have more time on our side with our valuable players.

I don't really disagree with them myself, I completely understand what they're saying (I've felt the same about some average players we've had who fit us perfectly). Just saying for that kind of money they could probably get younger/better. It's not like Murphy is 21 or 18 like Byram or Cook. He's 32. He's maybe had 2 or 3 good to decent seasons in circa 15 years. But then the Town fans say he brings more to their team than just goals and having said the same about Grant Holt many a time to derision, if that's the case, I can see why they want to keep him.

if he left then we'd either have to change our style of play (unlikely to happen)
commiserations...

Yeah I agree there's little scope for a better deal to come along but often players don't fit at new clubs, regardless of their pedigree. If Ipswich were likely to struggle this season then the money isn't a bad option but going close last year gives ample justification for rejecting approaches - even if they are above market value.

Kieran Agard is out for 2 months. Meaning we only have Wilbraham in the forward department.

Mark Little also has picked up a slight knock in training. We are very short on players!

Can I panic yet?

can't believe we've actually done something of note for the first time in 11 years

am i dreaming? this reminds me of the good times again when we signed Rob Hulse, and we hit the ground running

something is bound to happen in the coming weeks to delete all this positivity
