Xmas is for kids, end of. I am working for the first time ever, and I am 52

I'm 53 and I still love it, but it's evolved as the years go on. This years it's friends over on Xmas Eve for a few sherries and bits and pieces to eat, then Xmas Day cooking for the whole family as usual and mayhem with the grandkids in the house. Love the chaos, but the kitchen is my sanctuary. Boxing Day, bubble and squeak for brekkie then off to football, then everyone around for tea. Then off to work Boxing Day night for triple time and a rest.

I don't like spending money on pointless gifts, especially when I don't have much money. It seems like I'm buying people rubbish they don't need just so I can avoid any awkwardness on Christmas Day. Also the expectation from family that you visit them at a certain time, on their terms is a bit annoying.

It sure is mate as the landlord hates the hyped up Christmas period. Thing is i have only heard other locals saying it's a great idea having no decorations and tree so it will just be a typical Sunday on the piss.

Decent time off work, spending time with family, plenty of food and drink - what's not to like?

Although this year I'm spending Christmas Day with my girlfriend's family for the first time, which might be a bit more 'bah humbug' because she doesn't like Christmas.

I like Christmas (at actual Christmas time, not in Nov/early Dec). I like the good food that you only eat at the time of year, plenty of booze, and resting from work. It's also a good reminder to meet up with mates at some point to catchup, sometimes we go too long.

The presents stuff does my head in. It makes the whole build up so hyperbolic and stressful, not to mention expensive. And did I mention stressful? By all means exchange a little something nice/meaningful with the misses or something, if you've got kids get them some goodies etc. But trying to find complete tat to give random family who do likewise for you is just daft. All for the sake of buying something because somehow not buying anything is rude / awkward. And the expectation that you'll spend the period running around trying to visit all the family - on their terms - is just crazy.

I'm 23 and this is the first Christmas where all my family won't be going around to the same house on Christmas Day for dinner and booze. Fees abit weird but we are all getting together on the 27th. I do love the Christmas period though, Plenty of time spent with the family and I've got some younger cousins so it's good to see them as excited as I used to get when I was 11!

I do agree on buying naff presents for people though, I have told people not to bother getting me anything, Spend it on the kids and I'll just play with their toys on the day

Apart from the wife, the immediate family have agreed to cap the present spend at £20. Can get some great tat for that!

On the food front, I've just bought a pork pie topped with cranberries from M&S - that fucker will do well to survive until Boxing Day.

Got to recommend the Southwold Winter Ale from them, too. 6.7% and it's marvellous. £2.40 a bottle.

There are plenty of things I have a tendency to be a bit bah humbug about but Christmas isn't one of them. I'm a big fan.

Think I've been fortunate in recent years in that it's been a pretty low-key event for us - this year I'm again just spending it with my parents and sister so we do all the little rituals we've always done as a family (don't have many other family commitments - visit to elderly grandparents and a visit from my sister's other half will be it). Just gonna enjoy spending some time with them all and MASSIVELY OVERINDULGING

I guess it wouldn't be so bad if Christmas fell in midweek. The fact Xmas Eve falls on a Saturday this year makes it doubly annoying. Mainly because that is our usual grocery shopping day. We always go out at 7.40am and get it all done by about 10.30am on a Saturday.
Yesterday, and can someone please explain why people do this. It was madness. 8am and everybody was in the store panic buying! I have a short fuse at the best of times, so I am surprised I got home without punching someone.
Bloody annoying seeing as Christmas starts on November 1st these days. Yet people feel the need to rush to the shops at the last minute!

Also annoyed about the lack of football. Didn't know what to do with myself yesterday with no football at all. None today either. Having withdrawals!
